Rick warrick was out changing a flat on his car, his fiance helping him, his two teenage children in the back seat. A car comes along, it strikes her, it strikes him. She ends up with broken bones in her leg, fractured pelvis and skull. She cries out to him, keep breathing keep breathing. His teenage children see whats going on and call 911 for help. Tonight, rick warricks mom has this message for that hitandrun driver. Its hard on me. I think the right thing will be to do just to turn yourself in. Accidents happen and we understand it was a tragic accident. Reporter this is not the first time violence has visited the warrick family. More about that coming up at 6 00. Pat collins, news4. News4 is tracking some ferocious winds right now. Temperatures plummeting and windchills soon in the teens. Gusty winds proving to be dangerous. This was the scene in germantown earlier today. The wind knocked down a light pole that landed on a minivan and no one seriously hurt. And wind is driving a dramatic drop in our temperatures. How cold will we see it . Temperatures up to 50 degrees earlier, now, it feels close to 20 and 30 degrees colder already just Getting Started with that dramatic drop. Gusts upwards of 40 miles an hour some locations a little higher than that. Wind gusts reported 38 towards manassas and and wind gusts at baltimore and the river. And that includes the entire region as we will see winds gusting up to 50 miles an hour and with that we could see tree branches and a few thousand people without power in our region too. At least five people have been killed including a Massachusetts Woman hit by a plow truck in the parking lot. That weather system created travel problems in our area with more than 200 flight cancellations. Reagan national had the most with 122 flights canceled. Bwi marshall had nearly 50 cancellations and dulles had 32. We have an update in Prince Georges County where a student punched a teacher in class and the school saying it was a misunderstanding. New information and reaction. This happened thursday at Forestville High School. The school sent a note home informing parents of this incident and we will hear from one parent that led to the socalled mixup that led to the student attacking the teacher. And a squatter that tried to take over their house. A jury convicted her today. Now, shes facing more than six decades in prison. It was 2013 when johnson and her family moved into a vacant home in Prince Georges County. When the rightful owners tried to evict her, johnson forged documents, including a contract and deed to make it seemed shed purchased that house. She is to be sentenced in march. Not guilty the plea from a former nba player greg anthony caught in a prostitution ring in d. C. He went before a judge today. He was arrested last week after trying to solicit an undercover cop. He responded to an undercover escort ad online. Hes a basketball analyst for Turner Sports and suspended indefinitely. Three days down two more to go for Nascar Jayson Werth who spent the weekend in the jail after pleading to a reckless driving charge 105 miles an hour in a 55 miles an hour zone. He has to serve five days in jail but being allowed to do that on weekdays weekends only so he can rehab from shoulder surgery and train for the upcoming season. We have a story we brought to you onnous 4. It was communication inside a metro tunnel that led to smoke filling it and one woman died from it. Along the red line in wheaton, what happened in the last few hours. Reporter heres what we can tell you definitively. Montgomery fire crews reported communication at the wheaton station. In the last couple of hours, metro says those problems have been identified and fixed. Metro technicians shined flashlights and walked the tunnels deep down at the wheaton station. Montgomery fire crews were here friday conducting a routine test and found there were communication issues trying to talk on radios directly from the ground to the platform. Either the equipment in the tunnels or equipment at the surface may not be fully functional to the specs we require. Reporter mike is head of montgomerys fire Communication Technology department. The key question how big a problem is this . Reporter does anybody have any reason to worry you guys wouldnt be able to communicate effectively . They do not. The montgomery Country Fire Department and regional partners have systems in place to community communicate effectively and do so on a daily basis. Reporter they said they could not communicate with each other inside the station. This first reported by the washington post. Hundreds of workers are wrapping up an emotional first day at the work site where they lost 12 of their colleagues. Theyree opened with a new name and new start for workers 17 months after the shooting at the navy yard. 17 months ago we got knocked down but we didnt stay down. Reporter naval and civilian employees, most of whom were inside building 197, when a gunman attacked came back to a renovated and renamed building today. Its good to be back. Reporter the 3,000 employees who work here have been spread out working a different location since the shootings. For many today was a reunion. Well probably get more emotional as we go throughout our day and you start seeing people you havent seen since we were in the building. Its a good thing were getting everybody back together again and get everything to start getting back to what could be reasonable as normal as can be. Reporter inside building 197 looks completely different than it did september 16th, 2013. Its been renovated. The idea was give it a new feel new sense for the work force so when people came back they wouldnt be constantly reminded of the things they saw that day. Reporter one of the biggest changes employees will no longer come and go through the old main entrance where the Security Guard was killed. It has been roped off and a memorial to all those killed that day. This is where one of the most traumatic events occurred that day. It needed to be changed. It needed to be changed for us. Shortly after the shooting i tried to come in this way and i just couldnt do it. Reporter only 400 of the nearly 3,000 employees who work here at building 197 returned today. The rest will be staged in the next two months. Some employees decided it was too traumatic to ever return to work here. After reading some of the 11,000 pages of document released by police about the shooting. Its been a fight by the family to get any information about his death over the last year and five months. For the first time they now have a better idea why only one Police Officer fired. Speaking with the father today, join us for his reaction. Reporter his father tells me when he read the interview of the Police Officers at his sons shooting he came to two main conclusions. One, his sons shooting was not justifiable justifiable, two, the officer who fired the shot was distracted and maybe even angry when he arrived at the scene that day. It made me feel good several of the officers saw the same thing i did. Reporter thats his reaction as to whats in the thousands of documents released in summons to a court order. He was shot and killed by officer adam torres. Don has always maintained his sons hands were up as he stood inside the screened door during the standoff he was unarmed. Torres told investigators he fired when he saw his hands go down towards his waist and thought he might be reaching for a weapon. Four other officers saw it differently. When the shot happened his hands were up. Im not here throw officer torres under the bus but i didnt see what he saw. Officer torres apparently saw something other than what we saw. I just cant feel he was justified in pulling the trigger. Reporter even after these many months theres been no determination whether the shooting was justified or torres should be charged. Its under the review of the justice departments civil rights division. Representing the family in a wrongful death suit. Was his ability to perceive affected by the fact he had just been in a fight with his wife an hour before the scene . I dont know. These are things we are discovering. The Police Department and leaders have been under fire for waiting so long to release the details of the shooting. They say lessons have been learned. I feel we could have attorney a much better job of sharing information both to the family but also to be more clear with the public about the basics of what happened. Reporter john geers family attorneys say they learned something important from the Court Documents that the officer had a meltdown just months before the shooting.
