A virginiabased Insurance Company is the latest to fall victim to a security breach. Anthem says tonight anyone whos been covered in the past or present is at risk. And that could be up to 80 Million People. Nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams joins us with a look at this. I mean here we go again. Is it just the hackers are that good or our fire walls are that bad . Well, a little of both, probably. Anthem the is a Company Based in the midwest but it does have customers in virginia and 13 other states. The company has a tabs of 80 million current and former customer and employees and its trying to go through it a and figure out in how many cases was information breached. It says its going to start emailing customers and sending letters, but this is going to take a couple weeks to work out. Information that wasnt obtained the company says is credit card numbers or medical information, but it says there was a trove of information that was taken out, names, dates of birth, Social Security number addresses, email addresses, and also Employment Information. The very kind of thing thats of most value to people trying to steal your identity. So the company says it will offer free Identity Protection and credit monitoring to people who were affected and the experts say, in fact theres not a lot that customers can do about this right now because if theres no way to prevent a crime from happening with someone tale stealing your data although one suggestion is that if you worry about this you can call the credit reporting agencies equifax and the others and ask them to freeze your Social Security number. That way nobody can open a credit card or get a line of credit using your Social Security number by the way, including you, you would have to call them back and ask them to unfreeze it thats one possibility. Why not. That could work. Good advice. From days to week often it takes that long for people to find out about these breaches but a committee in the senate is trying to come up with a bill to create more transparency. What are the likely chans thats going to happen . Theres a lot of interest in trying to get more cybersecurity legislation. Thats one possibility. The other is more sharing of information from the corporate world to the fbi. But the fbi is giving this company credit. Usually the Companies Find out from the investigators that theyve been hacked. In this case they say anthem discovered it itself notified the fbi, which could then start investigating quickly, which can help when youre trying to follow the lead. Okay. Pete williams thank you so much. You bet. Always good to see you.
