Winer, should someone suffering from severe depression be taken off the job in a job where a spurn responsible for others safety . They should but the reason is this is. Im not worried about Something Like what happened with the airlines happening again necessarily. The problem is that when somebody is severely depressed, theyre also having problems with impaired sleep, impaired concentration, impaired memory. Their motor functioning is slowed down. So all of those types of things, i think, make them vulnerable or at risk of getting in an accident and having problems. So thats really the reason i think they should be taken off the job. Temporarily. I do not think that a history of severe depression or severe depression that has been treated should necessarily be a reason for somebody to not get their job back once theyre treated. Thats a good point. Is there any way for an employer to test or discern a persons mental stability . You know there really isnt. When youre in the Mental Health field youre relying on the reporting from the person that youre trying to help. So if somebody is committed to not share with you the fact that theyre having sad mood suicidal thoughts and cant sleep, youre not going to be able to just get that information by just you know looking at them. Youre going to need input from them. But its not really that different than other fields of medicine, because if somebody has chronic pain or chronic migraines or also is having sleep problems you are not going to know that as a primary care doctor either unless they report that. Suicidal thoughts are common in people suffering from depression but very common in people who are suffering from severe depression. One other thing that i think is important to note that people with severe depression are also at risk for something called a psychotic depression occurring in 5 to 10 of people with severe depression. Not just depression but delusions or abnormal thoughts and behaviors. Thats really concerning. Is it common for people with suicidal thoughts to want to hurt others . Absolutely not. So when somebody is suicidal they really are having thoughts ar hurting themselves. Its very unkmncommon to have thoughts about wanting to hurt somebody else in addition. Quickly remind people about depression and how treatable it actually is. Its a very treatable condition through both therapy and medication. In general about 75 , 80 of people who get treatment are going to get better. Generally it takes about four to six weeks but most will improve. All right. Thanks barbara.
