I think most of our stray shower chances now are going to be over with us before we get towards 3 00 or 4 00. Temperatures holding in the 70s for today with the return to the sunshine. And next four days look really nice. Very windy and breezy today, and a little on the breezy side tomorrow as well, but nice low humidity the next couple of days. Little chance for rain on saturday. Facebook at work, we know you do it, and you can actually argue it boosts your creativity. A team of researchers just published a paper that argues that people, some people, use social media at work as a sort of selftherapy. The benefits especially apply to younger people who ended up in jobs that werent quite right for them. As you may have guessed you can take this a little too far. Researchers say too much facebook scrolling can actually make people unproductive. I imagine so. Youre spending so much time on the computer, phone, whatever not doing the work. Grocery Store to find the calories on a can or added sugar in the cereal. Help is apparently on the way. Here to tell us where, when and why of the new labeling is a registered dietitian and nutrition expert. Thanks for coming. Thanks for having me. So whats this all about . Why are they changing . Yeah, so just recently announced the
Nutrition Facts Panel is getting a facelift, which is good news for consumers because after 20 years theyre updating the look and the information being provided. One of the big changes that people talk about is the way the sugar will be listed on their label. Tell us about that. So right now its somewhat of a guessing game for consumers when you look at a
Nutrition Facts Panel, you will notice you cant really figure out how much added sugar is in the product differentiate between whats naturally occurring and added. So with this new
Nutrition Facts Panel youll actually know the number of grams of added sugar as well as how that contributes to your daily value. I understand theyre also increasing we can see there the size of the calorie box. Is that what most people are actually looking for . Yes, we actually know that about 75 of consumers actually do look at the
Nutrition Facts Panel. But calories are significant. And this really can help make consumers make informed choices particularly when it comes to reducing their r risk of being overweight or obese. You think thats the main reason people look at that box if theyre dieting . Well, i do think that does play a role depending on the type of diet, but as a registered dietitian i would say look at the total
Nutrition Facts Panel, make sure its calorically balanced with essential nutrients. Now, i understand serving size is changing too. Tell us about that. Yes. So basically what theyre doing is theyre updating the s consume today. We eat a lot more now than we did say ten, twenty years ago. Yeah, this has been since the early 90s, and by law we have to put in the serving size what we actually consume now. So theyre actually going to be increasing as well. Because i know often look at a cereal box its like a quarter cup or half cup. If you measure out your bowl is pretty empty, right . Thats going to get a little bit of a boost as well to really reflect what we consume. And calories of course will rise. Yes. So what about organic . Is that going to be on the label . That would be different than the
Nutrition Facts Panel, and theres regulations that actually address organic as well. But we know vitamin d and potassium will be listed. Thats new. Calcium, vitamin d, potassium and iron, why theyre adding those specific nutrients is because many of us dont consume enough of them. So do you think the products will then decide to add those things now that were going to know whether theyre in there or not . Thats a good point and that could be the case. They can voluntarily list other nutrients, but those four are required. So when will we see these changes . Well, actually the companies dont have to follow these regulations or theyre not put in place for two years, but i suspect youll start to see them rolling out over the next year or two. I see youve got eggs here. Yeah. Eggs have a nutrition label on them too . Yes, they do, right here on the back. Rule of thumb is any kind of packaged food is going to have a
Nutrition Facts Panel or existing facts panel. But whats in the egg is not going to change per manufacturer, chicken, right . True, but they again will be required to update based on these new labels. Again, the new nutrients will be enclosed. So we can get ready for this to start happening any time now. Yes. Youll start to see these rolling out very soon. They dont have to have correct. Thanks so much for coming. Thanks for having me. We all know whats going on with our food. Aaron. Barbara, thank you. An orioles player could be in trouble after charging the mound during last nights game. A look at what caused the bench clearing brawl. And how latenight tv handled the news that
Hillary Clinton had enough deletes forga. Watch out for that 99mileanhour fastball. You could end up like this. That is orioles star
Manny Machado charging the mound after orioles pitcher yordano drilled him in the back with a heater yesterday. Players argued on the field earlier in the game, then that happened in the fifth inning clearing the benches there. Were still waiting to hear whether any of the players will receive a suspension as a result. So was he in trouble for throwing a fastball or because it hit somebody . If he threw it on purpose to hi trouble. Well see. The fight that came afterwards there may not be an orioles team to play. I think theres going to be a fine or two. The fact they were brawling before doesnt help his case that, oh, it was an accident. Oh, i didnt know they were fighting before. I got it. Yikes. So how about this weather . Were liking this. Mother nature throwing us a slow pitch today. Nice day outside. Look at you with the baseball analogy. Good job. Crack of the bat. As good of a forecaster as i am. Outside today is really windy out there. Winds still gusting to 40 miles an hour at joint base andrews, a 37mileperhour gust at the bay bridge in annapolis, 38
Miles Per Hour at the inner harbor in baltimore and 35mileanhour wind gusts up in hagerstown. Very blustery and breezy. Thats not going to change for the next little bit. This is in rockville looking west towardstysons corner, little shaking on the camera because of the winds out there. Meanwhile the good news is the for the day. If youre going out after the lunch, get the car washed, absolutely. Next chance for a shower after today comes in on saturday. Probably saturday night. Heres the rain now. Thunderstorms up here near philadelphia, but the trailing edge of that system is grazing right across northern maryland, now headed across the middle and northern parts of the bay. Heres the last of the showers joint base andrews right there, the runway at the airport, heres route 50 going out bowie to the bay bridge,
Wind Restrictions likely on the bay bridge, special
Marine Warnings on the bay and on the tidal potomac as well. Gusty winds, any folks in the paddle boats have been called back in to safe harbor so to speak. This is last rain chance for the metro area until saturday. Temperatures should recover a bit in northern maryland. Once the sunshine gets back where the sun has remained out temperatures remain in the low to mid 70s now. Its rain cooled cloudy low 60s in northern maryland. Highs today low to mid 70s on average with a clearing already thinking about getting away from town for the weekend, going down to the beaches, friday and sunday look spectacular. Small chance for a few evening showers late saturday night most likely down to the coastline. If youre sticking around town this weekend, also for your outdoor plans friday no worries, sunday dry and breezy and saturday just a small chance for some showers. Probably between about 6 00 saturday evening up to about midnight. What about tonight . If youre going out this evening its going to be breezy. Temperatures near 70 early, falling back into the low 60s by 10 00 tonight. And wake up temperatures tomorrow morning there will be 40s on the map from
Central Virginia out to parts of the shenandoah valley. Your sevenday forecast is a nice one around here the next couple days. Drying out today, full sunshine thursday. Mostly sunny on friday. Little chance for rain saturday. But sunday looks nice. And more low humidity coming our way early next week. Wow, that looks good, chuck, thank you. This election season has been something o in case you missed jimmy fallon last night, heres his commentary on
Hillary Clintons nomination. Hillary was so excited when she found out that she asked her staff to schedule 15 seconds of smiling. Thats right,
Hillary Clinton has apparently earned enough delegates to clinch the nomination. Hillary told her assistant to break out the champagne, and he said, actually, you drank it all when trump secured his nomination. [ cheers and applause ] [ laughter ] president obama will be on the tonight show for the first time on thursday. Jimmy fallon has interviewed the commander in chief, but hes never been on the tonight show. In studio. Thats right. Never been in studio. Be interesting to see how that goes. After the break, meet the broadway roles on stage in our area now. Stay with us. To the women who know what real values are, you inspire us to bring you real value every day. Open your eyes, you have arrived at la cage aux fz folles. It debuted on broadway more than 30 years ago earning nine tony nominations and six of the coveted statue ets. The musical base on the 1973 french stage play by the same name, la cage here to tell us more are two stars of the show,
Brent Barrett and bobby smith. We appreciate you both being here today. Glad to be here. Thank you. What a fun production you are all in the middle of right now. Folks, i remember i havent seen the stage version, i have seen the movie, but this is a story thats been around for a while. And just people flock to see, right . They do. They do. Its based on a 1975 french film. Without music. And jerry her man and
Harvey Firestein put the show on broadway in 1982. 1982. Uhhuh. And then they made the american film the bird cage based on the original film. Right. Now, you played the owners of the nightclub. Right. George runs the club and alban is the female performer. Tell us about the role. Tell us about george. Well, george, you performer. They met, theyve been together for 20 years. Theyve had this club for 15. And george has a son who is 24 who is getting married, who is bringing the family to meet his family for the first time. And the daughters family is a very conservative right wing politician in the south of fran france. And so the problem is trying to introduce him to his family which is not going to be very um, very accepting of the life that we have and the life weve created. And so hilarity ensues. Partly your character. Im the mother. And because its a drag club in the south of france and im the performer and i have been his surrogate mother forever. And so the that he believes he should be the mother. But also sort of contributes to some of the fun in this production. Absolutely. You talked about the costumes and singing and the bigness of it all, right . Its such an intimate space too. And the wonderful thing about signature, which ive never been to before, its kind of a little jewel box. And its a beautiful production. The set is gorgeous. And the costumes, i think its probably the largest show that signature has attempted in their history. 200 costumes, wigs. Makeup changes, dancing and its incredible. Now, im going to see this saturday night, really hard to get tickets for this. Very difficult. Why do you think this is resonated so much with so many people for so many years this show. And even here again in arlington. I mean, besides the entertainment value its really a family story of the two parents and the child. And its reall relationship. Besides the humor and the songs, it really, i mean, it has incredible heart because its the story of this family and how they overcome this obstacle. Gentlemen, thank you so much. Thank you so much. Barbara. Its been 40 years since ka
Caitlyn Jenner competed in the olympic games. A film released of jenners journey. An olympian in maryland doing everything he can to get his medal back right now. He went to churchill high school, he won the gold for slalom canoeing during the 1992 olympics in barcelona. He says ever since he won he has taken that gold medal with him everywhere. But earlier was stolen with the medal inside. When police found the car the medal was gone. That olympic medal has no real monetary value to someone out on the market. And so i think for us its about giving them an opportunity to have their own olympic gold medal moment and do the right thi thing and return the medal. The theft happened in atlanta, but jocobi is asking for help from anywhere anywhere who might know what happened to his medal. Well, it is famous for stunts you have to see to believe. Cirque Du Soleil they call this particular show curios, they call it a dazzling hyper detailed potent, and generally fantastic show. And with us the creator of curios, michelle laprice and performer showing off a little of what he does on his show. Hes the only one in the world who can do this but up in a platform in the air. Thats why his character is aviat aviator. Aviator. So you created this particular show. Well, its a team work. We assemble, we work two years on that. The first of themn process i to the team this is moha we had to come a little predictab predictable, but i said not with this show. So we worked so hard to reinvent ourselves and were very proud of that. Its been breaking records of sales and attendance, but more important it touches the heart of people. So i understand that you transport the audience inside a fantasy world. Tell us about that. Well, its the first time we really go specifically into an era. Its the second half of the 19th century where a lot of inventions were coming, a bit like what we were doing with internet right now. So theres a lot of contraption like you see, taking a walk on the stage, and hes driving a punk like airplane at one point. Every seen is curiosity, something invented, very new, very surprising. So we wanted to make very optimistic show because i think people need that right now, they need to be entertained in a very noble way. Yeah, its 19th century costumes. Yes, yes. This is like fitted creation from france and very refined costume designer. So theres a lot of inventions. Every designer put himself or herself into that show, as i said earlier, it was more than a show, it was a mission. Lets reinvent, lets bring joy to people. And you see people are very emotional about this show because they feel like its for them. We have a lot of characters that are not creatures, theyre people you can relate to. They tell a story . Yeah, yeah. Tell us a story. The story is, oh, my god, i dont have much time to say it, but its about a character that we named the seeker invented a machine he wants to travel into another dimension, but the machine has a misfunction. And he has people from another dimension coming to his world bringing poetry. And reinventing his world. So thats what we want to do with peoples lives. Characters that have hats and suitcases, canes and stuff, but what they do with those things are very surprising. Yes, thats what i heard. So where can people see the show . Well, were at tysons, were really excited because its a booming place and this show is about innovation. So were happy to be there. Were there from july 21st, and i can see now we
