The cdc resently released the results of the youth risk survey. Its conducted every two years since 1990 looks at rates of risky behavior in students. Thanks so much for joining us. Tell us a bit about the survey and what risky behaviors are we talking about here . Were talking about sexual behavior, drugs, alcohol, things of that nature. As you said, this study has been every two years since 1990. The cdc looks at 16,000 kids across the country, rural, urban, suburban, private school, public school. Theyre assessing the rates of these types of behaviors so we can see trends and where attention needs to be paid. What are some of the findings . Are we seeing big differences from 25 years ago to the findings of today . The majority of risky behaviors that they have looked have consistently gone down for the most part since the 1990s. I think thats going to shock a lot of viewers. I think a lot of people think these things are on the rise. When we look at the specific behaviors, youll find the vast majority of kids are getting enough sleep. 75 are getting less than 8 bullied. 16 of girls say they experience dating violence with 10 of that being forced sexual intercourse. 10 of High School Girls say they have been raped. Remarkable numbers. Let me ask you about this because it seems like attempted suicide is a topic that keeps coming up. Is that higher or lower than it was before . Its roughly the same. You see some trends. Things will go up, go down. Its creeped up a little bit over the last five years but nothing significant. Maybe a few years ago it was 8 . These numbers have remained the same. Also youre looking at about 30 of High School Students say they feel like they are depressed at some point during the year meaning down in their mood for two weeks or more. Roughly 20 of the kids say they thought about making a Suicide Attempt. Perhaps social media has played some type their ability to express what is going on in their lives. Theres not really a shift there in the numbers, perhaps it seems like its happening more and more now but because were hering it so much more, were seeing it more and more. I think you hit the nail on the head. Thats why were thinking these numbers should be going up or going up when theyre really not. When you think about it, 1 in 11 or 12 kids, High School Kids making a Suicide Attempt every year is astounding. We need to be doing something about that. What about drug and alcohol use . These numbers have been coming down. The number of kids say they tried alcohol is 63 . 39 for trying marijuana. 17 for prescription drugs. Alcohol has gone down dramatically. These numbers are averages. Its going to be lower for 9th graders and seniors. Marijuana has higher in the early and mid90s. N it went down and now its creeping back up again. Prescription drugs is something the cdc has looked at over the last five years but that number has gone down too. Thank you for breaking down the risk survey behavior. My pleasure.
