Today. Todays friday field trip with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from miami beach. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to a special edition of today on this friday morning. Weve got a great crowd in miami, up early, out on the beach in south beach. Im Savannah Guthrie, alongside willie geist in for matt lauer, al roker and Natalie Morales. I could get used to this. I could definitely get used to this. Sunny, warm, 75, seven miles of beaches on miami beach. We dont know if a lot of people are here early or up late from last night. Little of both. Feels like a mix, doesnt it . The party will continue. Flo rida will perform a live concert here. Pitbull will show us around his town, mr. 305, mr. Miami. Different start to the day in cities like chicago, kansas city, tulsa, where drivers are dealing with a ton of snow this morning. Well have more on that, coming up. And an impending possible noreaster for our friends in new england. Well keep an eye on that. Scary scene caught on tape at a ski resort in new mexico, a tonager falling from 45 feet from a ski lift. Thankfully, he survived. How hes doing this morning. Wow lots to get to this morning. We want to start with the breaking news of the Oscar Pistorius case. Decision on bail is expected at any moment. In south africa for us this morning. Michelle, good morning to you. Hi, savannah. This really is going to happen today. Pistorius family looks extremely nervous. Tears in their eyes, stress all over their faces and in their words. Pistorius, though, looked much more relaxed, far less emotional than weve seen. At the beginning of today, his attorney grabbed his clasped hand and said were going to be all right. Do you hear me . He quietly responded, thank you. Oscar pistorius entered the court with a calm demeanor, looking more collected, even more confident than weve seen. Then head lowered, eyes closed. Prosecutors picked up their arguments, ripping into pistorius account of what happened the morning Reeva Steenkamp was killed in which he claimed he was screaming, yelling for her to call police about a burglar and her in the bathroom, without him knowing it. According to prosecutors, she did not say a word. She did not scream. She did nothing. Its so improbable. Its not true. Even on pistorius statement that he ran back into the bedroom, saw reeva wasnt in the bed and realized what had happened. I would imagine you would look everywhere for her. Downstairs. Where is she . It doesnt make sense to think, i shot reeva because shes not here. It would come later not immediately. Slept with open windows and doors, why he wasted time to unlock the front door before carrying her down and criticize what they describe as pistorius attitude of ive done nothing wrong and looking forward to business as usual. Today his coach of nine years, confident pistorius will be released from jail, said he would like to start training him again monday. Pistorius has no plans to race, he thought training would be the best thing for him right now. I think just to get his mind sort of clear. The sooner he can start, the better. Outside that courtroom, a debate over this has been everywhere. You hear people arguing about it in the streets. I think hes not a monster. Reporter his defense has insisted whatever the alleged actions or circumstances may be, there is no evidence this is murder at all. But pistorius was in a panic that night to save reeva, whose friends watched this hearing minutes away from a ruling now and remember her. She actually sent me a message at the beginning of the month and said, this month is going to be amazing. Its going to change our lives forever. Reporter even though this has turned into something of a mini trial, the only Big Questions here are is pistorius a flight risk . The courtroom laughed at that suggestion. Is he dangerous or a threat to justice . Do you think it would be a shock to the community if he was released . The attorney said given some of the problems weve seen with the states evidence and witness, it would be a shock if he was not. Well find out soon in about half an hour, savannah. Michelle kosinski, thank you so much. Roy black is a criminal defense attorney, joins us here in miami. Roy, good morning to you. Good morning, savannah. First question, do you think this is a case where bail will be granted, should be granted . I think it will be granted. In my estimation, its clearly not premeditated firstdegree murder. Its some type of, at best, negligent homicide or accident. In a highprofile case like this, is a judge aware of and likely to be persuaded by whatever he thinks public sentiment might be if he lets someone like this out of jail . The judge is a human being. Theyre impressed by the press, by the country. He even asked questions during the hearing. Whats going to be the reaction if i grant the bail or dont grant the bail . Judges are very sensitive to the reaction to their rulings. Weve already seen a lot of evidence for a bail hearing, more than we would typically see for a bail hearing in this country. Size up the prosecutions case. I know youre a defense lawyer, but put your more objective hat on at this moment. The story that pistorius tells, its possible. Is it plausible . I think it is plausible for this reason. When you wake up in the middle of the night, youre not thinking as well as you are during the day. So he could be disoriented. He could be confused. I think the most telling part is they claim this is a premeditated murder. But somebody doesnt plan to kill somebody that after shooting them calls security, calls for the paramedics, pick them up, run doupwnstairs and t to perform cpr on them. Thats very different than an intent to kill. It could be negligent homicide because he did a lot of stupid things while it was going on. But i dont see premeditated murder. When you say negligent homicide, thats some intent to kill Reeva Steenkamp . Thats something against the intruder theory . No, a culpable negligence. We would call it manslaughter. You dont intend to kill but your actions are so dangerous they put other lives in danger. A lot to work with, with the police investigation. The lead defendantive removed from the case, facing attempted murder charges of his own and has to acknowledge pretty significant missteps. Is this just a gift to the defense team . This is, lets say, a serious problem into the prosecutions case. This guy has been in charge of the case for seven days. The chief investigator is in charge of collecting all the evidence. In a case like this, the forensic evidence, little pieces of things they pick up are more important than anything else. In a murder trial, 90 of the trial is not witnesses but the forensic evidence. Now we have a man under indictment, in charge of picking up the evidence and he misses bullets, he doesnt wear protective clothing, at lealeav stuff on his shoes. All kinds of missteps. You could go to south africa and make this argument. I would love to. Great to get your perspective. Thank you so much. Now heres willie. We understand its unfair of us to be standinging here on south beach while a lot of you are snowed in. Its warm and sunny here in miami, but the middle of the country is being bombarded with snow. John yang is in chicago. Good morning to you. Reporter i actually thought i was going to be on set with you guys this morning. I dont know what happened here. In chicago, were getting a lull from the heaviest of snow as this storm, which pummeled the plains, is now moving east. Across the midwest, its shaping up to be another tough day to get from point a to point b. On the roads this is a terrible day for everybody. Reporter just take a look at what this minivan does to a traffic light in illinois. Getting into the air is no easier. More flights are canceled and airports struggle to reopen. I first walked in, saw the line here and said this cannot be good. Reporter at nbcs kansas city affiliate, staying on the air is the challenge, as staff clears snow out of satellite dishes. Across the region, snow is falling at a furious pace, challenging shovellers. Trying to keep sidewalks and everything clear. Reporter the storm is leaving behind impressive snowfall accumulations, 10. 5 inches in raymore, missouri, 12. 5 in alva, oklahoma, and a foot and a half in kansas. In kansas, state office is closed for all but essential workers. In texas, the problem is ice. South of new deal, texas, a sevencar accident shuts down traffic on an interstate highway. You dont have to work or travel. Its a time for fun. Shes playing all over the place in it, loving it. Reporter for this young girl its a chance to do something nice for dad. I am cleaning up the driveway so that when my dad gets home, he can get warm inside and get in the house. Reporter chicago is getting its heaviest snowfall in more than a year. Willie . John yang, lose the hat and come on down and hang out with us. He cant get a flight. Good point. John, thanks so much. Al is, of course, keeping an eye on that storm for us, where its headed next. What are you seeing . More snow, as john has already told you. Weve got snow through the upper great lakes. Lets go to the radar. You can see weve got a lot of snow up around there. And down to the south, the stormy side of this system, weve got a lot of wet weather to talk about, lot of rain. Snowfall amounts basically around the great lakes. It will be anywhere from three to six inches of snow. As you get to the south, flooding rains from mobile on into wilmington, three to six inches of rain. Now weve got a secondary system that will break off that main system, make its way up the coast on saturday. And right now, depending on the path of this storm, were going to be look iing at either a dect amount of snow from boston to the west or just in the interior sections of new england. In fact, take a look. The european model shows this weekend, boston picking up four inches of snow, manchester, seven inches. Albany, five. The american models show the heaviest snow to the west of boston. Boston getting almost no snow and new york city getting zip. Well just have to wait and see what happens with those two systems. Again, whatever happens, it looks like we are not out of the woods for a long time before we start to see things finally come out. It will be a very active pattern for the next seven days. We feel a little guilty having that forecast when were standing here. We are all feeling guilty. Were with you in spirit. We are all feeling very guilty. Im convinced, al. Lets head back up to new york for a check of the other mornings stories. Why do i have a feeling my coanchors went to miami and all im getting is a lousy tshirt . You look incredible down there.
