Thanks for joining us tonight. Im shawn yancy. Im brian bolter. Its the end to a nightmare vacation for thousands of passengers on board talk nothing power, no working bathrooms for many. The horrible heat and smell forced some passengers to sleep outside on the top deck. Fox 5s will thomas is following the story for us. The cruise ship is pulling up to the dock right now and for the 4,200 passengers and crew aboard they cannot get off that ship soon enough. Lets take another live shot of the cruise ship. Its already been cleared by customs, so we expect to see the first passengers walk off within 30 minutes of being tied up. Its been a long agonizing five days adrift in the gulf of mexico. Heres more. Our best estimate right now, once the ship ties up we estimate that it will take four to five hours to complete debarking of all the guests off the ship. A nightmare on the water and another one just to get off. Passenger as board the crippled Carnival Cruise ship lined up for hours before the ship even got close to the alabama shore. Toilets have overflowed, buckets of sewage lining some of the hallways. Brenda cologne is a passenger. Look at this twitter pic. Its virtually a tent city on the decks of the ship. Passengers use bed sheets to shield themselves from the sun. I think that was our biggest challenge of the whole bathroom situation. Me and my cabin mate had to abandon our room because of that. You know, thank goodness that our friends room was not overflowing like that because thats where all of stouffer is and thats where were able to stuff is and thats where were able to wash our hair over the sink. Its all about finding someone with a room with a working bathroom. Julian a hare is also on the ship. Finally they got a few bathrooms working but the line was like an hour long probably because everyone had to go. Her dad summoning the family members on dry land is among the family members on dry land in mobile. She just called me a few moments ago and shes doing fine. Theyre not comfortable. Theyre not very happy about it. Theres plenty of unhappy people waiting for family members upset over carnivals perceived miscommunication and poor planning. Heres a passengers husband. Tell us the damn truth for what you know. We havent heard anything truthful yet to my knowledge. Carnival Officials Say theyre ready to get passengers off that ship as quickly as possible. It will take us some time, but we do have a good plan in place and we have a lot of people in place. Another live look here in mobile. It looks like the triumph is now pulled into the spot. Theyre tying item as we speak now in the cruise ship terminal there. Many family members are waiting for their loved ones to disembark. Were told by carnival officials the first passengers off that ship will be anyone with special needs or children. Carnival has a fleet of charter buses standing by to take people on a seven hour bus ride to houston so people can catch flights to their final destinations from there or heres the second choice. Passengers can take a two hour bus ride to new orleans and they can catch flights out of there tomorrow as well. So the ordeal will not be over for a while and well continue to watch this for our next 90 minutes. You got to feel for all those people on board the ship and their loved ones who have waited without answers. Is carnival likely to face lawsuits after all this . Well, lawsuits can be filed no matter, what but passengers may be in for a rude awakening because of the fine print on their ticket. It will likely limit carnivals liability. Thats what experts are telling us. Besides the 500 bucks, the transportation home and a free cruise in the future, if they want, most of them wont get much more unless they can show they became say ill during the ordeal and have punitive damages. More on this one coming up. A developing story out of alexandria, virginia, an autopsy confirmed a 94yearold man was the victim of a murder. Tonight his widow speaks out. Switch gears now, the weather roller coaster continues, great day today, big changes on the way and chance of snow for the weekend. Lets turn things over to fox 5s sue palka watching all those models that are coming in. Its not a clear cut situation. The models are all over the place on whether or not we might get some snow primarily very late tomorrow night or saturday. Heres one thing we do know. Its going to be nice and warm tomorrow. Then its going to get colder for the weekend, an arctic boundary. We go straight to the temperature map to show you we are at 41 degrees now, but up to the Northern Plains you find chicago on the leading edge of that colder air at 34 and behind it drops to 13 at international falls, fargo at 5 degrees and 28 degrees in lincoln. That arctic front will cross us very late tomorrow night. Well get warm ahead of it, but as it crosses it could squeeze out a couple rain and snow showers. It would be a lot like what happened last night where any rain or snow showers would probably melt on pavement, but after that does a wave of low pressure try to form on that arctic boundary . Thats the question were still trying to get answers to tonight. Some of our models say yes, but it would very much depend on how strong does this thing get or track out to sea or stay closer to the coast. Our question is this. Does the low go out to sea . If it does, theres not going to be a lot of snow but maybe a small accumulation especially south and east of d. C. If that track were closer to the coast, we might be talking about some accumulating snow along the i 95 corridor on saturday and it might begin say 3 a. M. Or 4 a. M. Friday. New details about a meltdown on metros green line last month that left thousands of passengers stranded on trains between navy yard and anacostia. Officials say the first failure was a miscommunication, but it got worse when one passenger decided to lead other passengers out against orders. Fox 5s sherri ly has the details. Reporter two green line trains stuck in rush hour with about 1,000 passengers each after the power suddenly cut off. The january 30th incident created panic and confusion. People uncertain how long theyd be stranded. The customers were alarmed. Some were frightened. All were inconvenienced and very uncomfortable. Reporter metro says a lapse in protocol led to miscommunication between officers that caused the initial power shutdown. We would not have been there if the protocols had been followed. Reporter the first train began evacuating short of the anacostia station, but the Transit Agency says the train operator who had just seven months experience failed to make adequate announcements and people in the back exited onto the track. Some passengers on the second train began selfevacuating, too. Nigel charles told fox 5 he led riders into the tunnel and out. I really wasnt thinking about danger. I was just thinking about trying to get in a better situation than we were in, you know. My big thing was how long are we going to be down there . Reporter metro says the train operator told the man to stay on the train, but he refused leading to a more dangerous and life threatening situation. An offduty red line operator followed to make sure they were safe, but some confused passengers thought they were being led by a metro employee, not a passenger. Board chairman tom downs believes metro needs to do everything it can to make sure people know the deadly consequences. Theyre risking their life about a train without any direction or supervision or protection. Reporter the incident started with an arcing insulator on the track. Metro says it was ready to restore power after about 15 minutes, but the passengers in the tunnel caused the delay to stretch more than two hours. One of the few good things that came out of this is no one was injured and no one lost their life. Reporter metro hasnt disciplined any employees for the lapses and says instead it will focus on improving training and drills for situations just like this. Most concerning, though, seems to be that selfevacuation. D. C. Board member Muriel Bowser pondered why people would exit the train and go onto the tracks and said you dont people doing that from an airplane stranded on a tarmac. In the newsroom sherri ly, fox 5 news. Metros Real Estate Committee approved a deal that could allow the new fbi headquarters to be built in prince georges county. Metro owns 78 acres at its greenbelt station that it wants to sell to a developer. That developer would then build the headquarters. The fbi is looking for a new location.
