WTTG Fox 5 News Edge Eleven March 1, 2017

Section of congress and the nation. The president called for the nation to unify as he addressed issues facing the country, including immigration, healthcare and the economy. By finally enforcing our immigration laws we will race wages, help the unemployed, save bills and bills of dollars and make our communities safer for everyone. Action is not a choice, it is a necessity. So i am calling on all democrats and republicans in congress to work with us to save americans from this imploding bicycle disaster. Everything that is broken in our country can be fixed. Every problem can be solved. And every hurting family can find healing and hope. Our citizens deserve this and so much more, so why not forces and finally get the job done and get it done right. Fox5s Tom Fitzgerald is live tonight on capital hill with reaction. All right, fitz, what are lawmakers saying about the speech tonight shawn and tone initial the racks coming out of the House Chamber tonight were remarkable in the fact that nobody really quite knew which President Trump they were going to see tonight. Was thissing whying to be the combative, loud trump that we had seen on the campaign trailer was this going to be Something Different . In the end it turned out to be be something very different. A quiet more deliberate president going point by point, hardly ever straying off the prepared text tonight, laying out a framework where he says he wants his administration to do from here on in, cracking down on illegal immigration, create a level Playing Field for businesses and trilled infrastructure. A reforming of the obamacare act and rework of the tax cut which is longo due. Of course tonight coming out of that speech, though, republicans seemed to say that they were relieved by the tone and the content to what they heard. Heres some reaction. Its distinctly different tone from the campaign. Youre going to participate with the maryland del education tomorrow to talk about healthcare. What do you need to hear moving forward weve been told march 16 to make sure marylanders are protected under whatever new version of the Affordable Healthcare Act comes out. In the plan were going to have to make certain that people are on insurance now that theyre transitioned into a new system. No one is going to be dropped. Were not going to forget about peoples preexisting conditions. The president was very constructive. He provided a great vision for the nation. I think he painted a picture of the things that needed to be priorities for american families, that he was going to do to grow the economy, to create security in the home land and abroad. So thats how the republicans saw it. But as you might not be surprised democrats have a dramatically different take on this speech tonight. They say if the president was calling for unity in this country tonight, well, the past few weeks according to democrats, the president they say has been sewing a the look of division. Only that is just the starter. If theres going to be a trilled Infrastructure Program a lot of democrats asking tonight how are they going to pay for this . Reduce the tax income in this country . These are some of the local democrats in our area looking not only at the tone tonight, but the content which they say was a long on ambition, but short on specifics. Basically its old wine in a new bottle. I mean we heard basically the same stuff, vou strip money from public schools, my take away here after the campaign trail is that this president , this person comes down on multiple sides of every issue. The hard to figure out where he is daytoday. If he wants to join us on issues that unite the country like modernize our infrastructure t, reducing the cost of prescription drugs weve already put plans on the table to do it. Join us. The democrats can speak out about this, but the reality here on capital hill is that republicans control both who is, the senate and the house. We are told in the middle of march the president will put forth his obama Reform Program and we will get a look at this budget moving forward. It doesnt appear any scenario right now, tony or shawn that the democrats have any vote that would be able to stop any of this. Were live tonight on capital hill. Well send it back into you. Thank you much. Meanwhile were learning new details tonight about the new immigration order that president tomorrow. The Associated Press is reporting the order will remove iraq from the list of countries whose citizens face a temporary us travel ban. The decision follows pressure from the pentagon and state Department Due to iraqs key role in it fighting the Islamic State group. The new order is designed to replace an order that was blocked by federal courts. Six countries, iran, libya, syria and yemin will remain on the travel ban list. And former Kentucky Governor steve what shear gave the address to trumps adefinitely one of his major talking points was healthcare. You and your republican allies in congress seem determined to]t rip Affordable Health insurance away present millions of americans who most need it. Does the Affordable Care act need some repairs in sure it does. But so far every republican idea to replace the Affordable Care act would reduce americans covered despite your promises to the contrary. What shear also changed the president s plans item gracious and national security. He went onto say he didnt believe the president s actions matched many of his promises to support working class americans. Recent Threats Targeting Jewish Community Centers and vandalism of jewish cemeteries as well as last weeks shooting in kansas city remind us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms. That is how the president began his speech tonight condemning those threats against people of jewish animus limb faith. Here in our area a number of Jewish Community centers and mosques abeen on the receiving end of some of those threats. Fox5s Marina Maracco has the latest on the latest incident. Reporter these recent threats are affecting different communities, as well as here locally and you saw the president at the address to congress straight out of the gait condemning these threats saying, quote, we stand united in condemning hate and evil in all of its ugly forms. Now, in the latest of these string of threats, notes and letters that were sent to mosque animus limb and Islamic Centers here in our area, those centers in maryland, particularly in Silver Springs and youre looking at a picture of that note, that note that was sent say, quote, i will pay 100 to charity for every muslim slaughtered, end quote. And then it was followed by a crude depiction of a violent act. Now youll see here the two centers that received the letters, the Islamic Center of maryland and the Jewish Center of Silver Springs, the letters received last night and its unclear if they were mailed or simply placed at the centers. The notes received just hours after there were three Jewish Community centers in virginia and maryland that received bomb threats via telephone calls. Tonight some are questioning why would letters like these asking for the slaughtering of muslims be sent to mosques . These communities fear that its shear harass amount and intimidation. People come here and go. I was a little bit afraid. I want to consult with the polish people. I spoke and they definitely they are terror crime. We all need to stand united and work towards making our country better. Sending these nonsensical letters and trying to intimidate people its not going to go far. Three days talk in the media, bomb boom, everybody for gets bit. I know were talking about this bad letter. Weve got these notes from our neighbors and other people that have about, you know, how apologetic they are for all the circumstances around us. Our hope is that its merely meant to intimidate and nothing further although unfortunately weve had a couple incidents, including an arrest in South Carolina just last week and then that terrible shooting n out in kansas. Weve had desecration of cemeteries. So some folks are going beyond speech and are starting to act. And thats why we have called on the president and all agencies of the federal government as well as Law Enforcement to elevate this issue to the appropriate level and have a broad task force to in every jurisdiction and to really fight, take this head on. The Anti Defamation League says that the fbi has been working in coordination with them and communicating progress as far as the investigation, but they say that still no arrests in connection with these threatening calls or letters. In mount, marina local news news. Vandals targeted Howard University with messages spray painted around campus, one message says welcome to the trump plantation. The vandals spray painted a second message that aas stand for something or fall for anything. The vandalism comes just one day after the president met with frederick and other leaders of h historically black colleges and universities.
