Le a live look at the latest track of the storm. Everything does seem to be on track. We expected to start seeing enough snow developing around 9 00 tonight. It might cover the grass in some areas and thats exactly what were seeing. Youre seeing snow here in the purple shade and the darker purple indicates a little bit of heavier snow. We got some of that coming through dc right now. You can see down 95 toward the fredericksberg area a little bit more but we also see the rain snow line, theres been sleet mixing in and a little bit of rain down to our south and east as we expected. This is going to continue all night long with the heaviest snow from now really until about 7 00 in the morning and it has been getting a lot colder, were starting to see sticking not so much to pavement. I checked the fox 5 parking lot. Nothing is sticking yet. But its sticking to the grass and cars and the fence to say around our building. Heres that heavier band were watching. Also moving north. So this may be able to put down a half ch had a half inch accumulate in is just the last hour or so as weve been watching. And if youve been paying attention to the storm for the last several days, you know this piece of energy has everything to do with helping to develop a new area of low pressure off the coast. That will be our noreaster and that is going to cause a huge mess for places like new york and boston. Were certainly going to get a very big snowstorm outside of it as well but we have very big challenges with this one, which well get into in a moment. Our heavy snow will begin around midnight and it will continue until 7 00 in the morning, that doesnt mean were done with snow at 7 00. Most of the accumulation is there by 7 00. Well have ongoing snow showers throughout the day. Even into wednesday to be honest but this rain snow line has been quite a challenge in the forecast and it remain as challenge but it does appear snow it will be cutting do you know totals, we will have wrap around snow evening we could watch another stream. Most will be to the north and west big totals where you have a chance at getting over eight and 12 inches and that is going to be Higher Elevations to our north and west but i mentioned rain snow line challenge and were going to send it over to caitlin roth because that will create a different scenario depending on where you live in this region. Hi, caitlin youre so right. We knew it would be the biggest challenge and it still will be going forward. Some of you waking up with literally nothing on the ground and some with a foot of snow. Very challenging doing our best to show you how thats going to go to develop. Most are seeing snow right now, and thats what we anticipated that at least until midnight, everyone will see snow. But that dividing line right along i95. Its a tricky when you live along 95. As a result winter storm warnings, snow should accumulate at least four inches or more are in pink. Winter weather advisory just Stafford County and Spotsylvania County and virginia where we expect less of accumulation due to the mixing and then change over to rain. In effect until 2 00 p. M. Weve been seeing temperatures fall steadily since sunset. 34 at Reagan National. 32 at dulles. Most areas north and west now at freezing or below and the snow is sticking of the best way for sue and i to know youre seeing snowfall or that its sticking let us know on social media. We love your teeth, Caitlin Roth Fox 5 and sue palka fox 5 dc. Shes seeing snow sticking to the grass, southern Montgomery County youre getting the snow. It will probably stick soon. Megan is in fredericksberg but theyre starting to see the mix line sneak into parts of prince Williams County and fredericksberg is one of our spots we expect little accumulation by tomorrow morning. Due to the sleet and then the rain mixing in. Also one of our favorites, strider saying we have snow cover cars in kingstown but grass and roads are just wet and as we go through the coming hours, we expect more snow to fall to continue to accumulate with that mix. Not starting until some time between 3 00 and 4 00 a. M. For dc and that will greatly impact the totals. We will show you the latest coming up in just a bit. First, shawn and tony back to you. Our coverage continues now with gary mcgrady, tracking the storm. Live in Frederick Maryland. Weve been calling this winters rerevenge left frederick moving to the south and its coming down good. In the last 30 minutes or so we got a lot of coverage. Basically a moderate snow ban now, in terms of the driving ban doing pretty slow. At little slushy trying to stick on the sides of the roads as you can see from the picture. Traffic not having a problem. Slowing down. Once the rate of snow picks up, thats really when were going to have a problem on the roads. The roads were well above freezing with sunshine and temperatures in the 40s. Were moving through a pretty good snow band and i anticipate that this is really going to continue to get a little bit heavier over the next several hours. Roads are primarily wet now just kind of reiterate that. And i do believe that the roads crews have done a great job out here. Pretreating and weve seen a couple of salt trucks earlier and i suspect were going to see plenty more of those. At least on this band were headed 270 south right now. Ive seen one car went offer the road. Whether or not it was weather related no idea. The state trooper was assisting them. Other than that, we havent seen anything. This is really the heaviest snow weve been seeing. And beginning to kind of pile up mainly off the roads on the grassy areas, side. The heaviest coming in overnight tonight. I suspect it is only going to i know its only going to be getting worse now for the next several hours, and tony and shawn, a little bit on the side personal note ive been here 13 years. Never, not one time have i ever been able to actually be out in the snowstorm. Ive always back there. Im kind of excited about this. This is new thing for me and tomorrow morning, van and i will be back out and i suspect hopefully 6 00, 7 00 in the morning, it will be something out here. And well be getting around and showing everybody i suspect five, six, seven, eight, one feet total, things like that, at least from the meteorologist were not chasing the snow. Were in the snow. Van, eyes on the road. Eyes on the road. Well be back about 10 30, and even at 11 00 as well. Very good. Thank you very much. Gary. Looks good. Fox 5 Lindsay Watts is live in leonardtown with more on the preparations underway there. Lindsay . Tony, its coming down here in leesburg. You can see snow plows, it was around 7 00 when the first light flakes started falling then turned to rain and it was about 8 30 we started seeing snow like this and you can see its a good rate of snowfall taking a look down, you can see whats accumulated in grassy areas, not too much, even less on the roads. Nothing there at this point, and thats the reason that these snow plows are still lined up yet. Virginia has 4300 pieces of snow removal equipment out and around tonight. And im joined now by Steve Shannon with v dot. When will they get moving as soon as the snow starts sticking to the pavement, start seeing tracking, they will be moving. Thats when they will apply the salt. This these particular contractors probably within the next hour or so. Again, depending on the road temps and when the snow starts sticking they will be moving out. Reporter not bad for drivers, we havent seen anybody having any trouble. What are you anticipating for the morning . Tomorrow morning could be treacherous. You got to understand, the temperatures, the ambient temperatures will be dropping, road temperatures below freezing, sticking with 4300 pieces of equipment. Welling it oh, treat the roads and plow them when its time to plow well star plowing. Reporter i wanted to show video. About a half hour ago, steve took us out to what you call the most dangerous place for drivers when it snows. In all of northern virginia. And this is clarks county line. Why so dangerous thats its about 2500 feet Higher Elevation than it is anywhere else and its just the spot and it is definitely the number one trouble spot any time we have Severe Weather like this. I have probably 12 trucks just to maintain that mountain. Reporter any other trouble spots . Route 50 towards upperville can get treacherous, here in Loudoun County, route 15 towards one of the rocks, temperatures tend to drop out there quick too. They can be treacherous. Reporter drivers definitely its going to get much worse. Thanks so much for joining us. Were cancelled. They had flights they were taxiing out to jfk. They had to reboard the passengers and wait to send them to other airports, things not looking good here. We spoke to folks who made it into the dc area right in the nick of time and others trying to figure out what theyre going to do in next couple hours. Take a listen. Because of the storm, i just wanted to get in early so that i can like head out earlier before the before the snow. Reporter great not bad. As schools know what theyre going to be dealing with tomorrow morning, theyve got extra days in the bank and luckily i think for a lot of people these crews will be able to get the job done in a timely fashion. This will be a heavy wet snow. Kind of a back breaker to shovel. Take your time with it tomorrow. How much snow are we going to be seeing . Well, tell you what . We know the rain snow line will probably cut down totals in or around the beltway area but we still feel comfortable saying it could be anywhere in the washington region from two to six inches and by the washington region in or around the beltway. If we get a lot of mixing and rain and sleet. That could be closer to two inches and that six could be way too much. South and east we know it will be a little bit of slush. Maybe an inch. If it changes, youre going to go see a lot leaving and as we get out towards Montgomery County and even into Frederick County thats when the totals go up to six. And the farther north and west you go into the pink area we have eight to 16 inches there will be very little mixing in those areas.
