Im joined right now by one of those heroes from that day 15 hes quite a character. He was also one of the heroes from that day as i mentioned, and he was inside one of the towers when it actually collapsed. The north tower, yeah. Reporter the north tower. Mickey, can you take us through that day . You were midway through a 24hour shift, and you really couldnt believe it when you got the call . No. I had come in the night before, and i was working a shift, which is normal at the Fire Department. We had a normal night out running around a little bit. Then i had a lot of paperwork that day. I was the officer, so you do the paperwork. Lots of paperwork in the Fire Department. We were going out inspecting buildings. So im sitting at my desk, and i was having a cup of coffee writing out some forms and i had the Fire Department radio on. I heard that an aircraft struck the north tower. Attention. Were four miles away from the trade center, so i didnt think wed be affected. Im thinking its a small plane and its a big problem. Not what it turned out to be. Two minutes later the computer goes off, and we get sent on a third alarm. Now i know this is more serious. I still dont know whats going on. You know, i dont know exactly. We drive down on the coast of manhattan and you trade centers until you get down there because theres so many other big buildings. Then we turned off the drive, and i had the trade center was in front of me. It was the north tour had this huge hole, gigantic. Ill never forget that scene. At that moment when i viewed it, the second plane came in and hit the south tower. We happened to be right next to the south tower. We were traveling north right next to the south tower. Right over our heads. The steel is coming down and its burning. It was just crazy. Like i mentioned before, for a second i thought, oh, this must be making a movie down here. I couldnt comprehend right away what was going on. I came to my senses in a few seconds, and i just oh, i had a great crew and a wonderful bunch of my driver, my chauffeur, he had 20 years on the job. He was weaving through the burning materials and got us to the destination, which was the lobby of the north tower. Standard operating procedure. I came in and i checked in to the chief. I just said im reporting as ordered. He reported he told us and ordered us up to the 23rd floor where there was a command post set up, another chief, and i was putting this fire out. I think that the building is burning from 88 to 93. So i figure were going to were walking up the stairs. We have all our equipment. I got to 23, and my guys were shot because they were walked up 22 flights of stairs carrying 80 pound of equipment. I told them to take a break. Ill find a chief and get back to you. I got deserted. Im looking for the chief, and then i heard talking from one of the other staircases. We were operating out of stairway b. That was our operational stairway. There was another stairway. I think there was c. I heard talking. I went in there, and there was two people in there. This was a woman that was a secretary. Her name was josephine. She was injured. Hes a true hero of 9 11. He stayed with his injured secretary. Instead of just fleeing and getting out of there, which he could have. Thank god i forget his name. I cant think of it at the moment. I wish i could. Reporter so youre in that stairwell with them. Yeah, with the two of them. I ordered them out. They didnt want to leave. I think i actually raised my voice and used some naughty langua attention. They were in like a fog. I said, you have to get out of the building. I said, ill get some firefighters to take you down. Thats what happened. Another company took them down and saved their lives. Right after that i heard we got an Evacuation Order that came over our radios telling us to get out. Ive been in the Fire Department for 25 years. Highrise burning building ever. I knew something bad was going on. I didnt know what it was exactly. What had happened is the south tower had collapsed, but i didnt know that. Were in the interior of the building. The stairways are all in the inner core in the building. I couldnt say outside. I didnt know it came down. I felt the building rock, but that was the south tower coming down. I didnt know that. So i started to go back to my company, 16, and they had already evacuated. Thank god i had a senior firefighter, and he had the wherewithal to take my company out. His name is firefighter tim marmia. He actually saved my companys life. I didnt save them. Very sharp guy. So i started down, and thats when the building started rocking and i heard this really loud noise over my head like a railroad coming at me or something. Then it everything started coming down, and i just grabbed my helmet and i ducked in the corner of the staircase. Like i tell people, i tried to crawl into my helmet. Thats the best way to describe it the next thing i know, all the noise stopped. Im totally covered, and i cant see anything. I cant feel my body. Im wondering if, you know i didnt know if i was alive at that point, you know. I tell people that having no experience being dead, you dont know what its like. So i was even thinking i could be dead, and then i started to wiggle my fingers and heard my radio crackling. Alive. Then i started hearing talk. I hear voices, and it turned out there was 14 of us in that small spot between i think its between the second floor and the fourth floor in the stairway. There were 14 of us still alive. Reporter so the whole building has come down . The whole building has come down. One little spot did not collapse. I ended up once having with a forensic anthropologist, and he explained to me why that happened. He said among every tragedy, great tragedies, always a little area doesnt get destroyed, always. He said it happened in pompeii and on the titanic. Theres a small area that doesnt get damaged. Thats where we were. And he had a name for it. He called it some kind of cocoon. Reporter miraculous. So you and 14 others survived . Yeah. Were looking and we have flashlights and we cant find a way out. Were there for two and a half hours, Something Like that. Im just sitting in the corner. Theres nothing to do at that point. You sit and wait and know people are looking for you, right . We had radio contact. Then i see above my head sunlight. Were in the second floor. Im looking over at the sky, and the building is gone. It came down in such a manner, it peeled away. So there was an opening above us. We saw the sunlight. You just felt like how do we get out of here . Reporter my goodness. We crawled up the steel and crawled out. As we come out of this little hole, it was a small hole. The rescue units looking for us, firefighters that were working there were looking for us. They saw us trying to. They came down with ropes and helped us get out. Here i am. Reporter incredible. Thank you so much, mickey, for sharing that story with us. Well have more on this later, of course, but weve taken up a lot of time. Thank you for sharing that. It happened. I dont exaggerate. Anjuli what a story. Thank you, kellie. Time now is 6 xx. Excavation efforts in california have come to an end. In the search for a Officials Say theyve found remains. This work week average, because rain chances are going up, theyre not this morning. Its nice and dry and a couple of high clouds over brookdale bayshore. If you dont watch the bucs game, maybe you can head out on the water and do boating. Light winds out of the southeast making these readings warmer than they are. With the humidity it feels like the low 80s and on track for eat this afternoon. Heres where we stand in terms of where we should be this time of year. My forecast is 93, so not quite recordbreaking. The record is 95 but were close again tomorrow. Tomorrow it gets closer to the normal reading. Satellite picture shows a couple of clouds and i have a couple of showers offshore, but they move away as we have that southeast wind. That ups our rain chances tomorrow, and today drier air aloft hangs on giving us 30 rain chance in tampa. Not until between 4 00 and 8 00 you can see moisture with one disturbance to the west moving away from the area. Its to the south and east of the state and thats in the wake of a weakening tropical wave but the slug of moisture is headed our direction. Tomorrow afternoon more in the way of showers and storms, but tuesday, wednesday and thursday look especially wet. Futurecast, how about any rain today . As we get into midday, probably shower. Futurecast is really aggressive. It is overdoing the storms tonight. Between 4 00 and 8 00, spotty showers build to isolated storms and then they move offshore. So monday back to work on a dry note, but for the ride home, probably a good idea to throw in an umbrella in the kids backpacks as storms are more numerous building west during the day tomorrow. Quick peek at the tropics. The disturbance headed our way wont develop tropically but this will lifting north headed to a 70 chance thats our next depression and the next named storm is ian, if youre curious. 93 today and a couple showers and storms building west late this afternoon. Really isolated rain tonight and 78 for the overnight low and 91 on monday with more numerous late day and evening storms, so not only a better rain chance, but heavier downpours is what we watch in the coastal areas through most of the week. Why so early . It leaves time for your stomach to proces the food for muscles to be able to use. What about nutrition during the game . During the game about 30 or 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour. That can be anything from a simple as 30 jelly beans and a couple of gel packs. Jelly beans . High source of sugar. Something like three cups of gatorade or powerade or Something Like that. A sports drink. Every hour or so if you consume that amount of carbohydrates, you stay lets go back to the gatorade and powerade for a second. Is it a good idea to consume a lot of gatorade . I dont want to see a lot, but its so vague. How much gatorade should we drink, and does it out weigh the benefit of Drinking Water if were performing . Im not talking about at home watching television. Im talking about performing playing baseball or whatever the sport may be . Through the first hour of exercise, the best thing to drink is water. Thats your best source of after that first hour your electric row lights are shifts.
