North carolina down by ten under five minutes to go, down by three here, the shot thats amazing. That ties the game up at 74. Jay wright calls the timeout. A play they worked on in practice. Airplay earplug heres kris jenkins call for the ball. He called for the ball and he took the shot. And you know, mike was an assistant coach with villanova. He was next to rolly. Players are happy but the expression of jay wright at the end of the game. Its like what just happened . A lot of times coaches jump up and scream. The players were and jay wright tried to keep it calm. I guess he didnt want to get any sweat on his new suit. Custom threads. Some of those police Chris Oconnell can was talking about there are plenty of them out there. Some on bikes and some mounted. So far we havent had any problem out there. Students and fans are happy. The guy Chris Oconnell talked to didnt go to villanova and he was thrilled. So yeah, this will be going on for quite some time early into the morning and well get into tomorrow when villanova gets back and in the parade. Long time coming. We talked about 31 years since last championship. They should be proud. Its electric out there. Temperatures starting to drop. Its getting cold, kathy was talking about a freeze warning. We have people out there in their shorts and short sleeves. They dont care. Theyre not feel it. Its definitely going to be cold. Theyre not feel it. Theres Chris Oconnell found maybe a little bit of a quiet spot right now. Wouldnt matter if it was raining. It wouldnt matter what it was doing. Everybody loves to party. Dont they . Lancaster avenue statistic shut down, no one going anywhere. I want to talk to this guy over here. Eric is an usher is the pavilion. What was it like in there tonight s mad house. So much fun. The kids are great i knew they were going to win because i see these kids, two, three hours before the game, prepping and stroking and the coaching that goes into it. Is unbelievable. I have a personal connection with the kids, with the coach. Coolest thing in the world when they got off from the regional. I asked coach wright, i said do you mind if any get a photo with you . He said i know who you are, of course you can. If you dont mind talking about it, your father was 56 villanova alump. Unfortunately he passed away yesterday. All the family is in tact. Were fine. He had cancer and was diminishing. Were trying to get him to hold on for the game. The camera found me i didnt look pour the camera. His is for you, cad can, youre an ncaa cheltenham. That was a great story, him being able to witness it. Having a personal connection. Terrific game like that. Got to be great feeling. What nice guy jay wright is asked oh take his picture with him. He knew who he was. That had oh make him feel good. Jay wright knows big time people you find guys in the game that have become bigger than life. Hes the biggest name right now as we speak in College Basketball because he won a National Championship. That will never change him. Thats when i when i saw somebody write a story to hes bog oh get an opportunity to go into the nba. He doesnt want to. Its harder to coach those players. You get new fresh kids every few years. You can get good players all the time and they listen to you and he loves the environment of that college. Loves the place in which he lives in this community out in the villanova area. And theres no reason to go. Its not about money. Its about being at a place that you really enjoy and in the nba youll be there maybe five, six years and youre going to get fired. In villanova you can be there the next 1520s years if he wants to be. Today was the payoff. It had to be pretty exciting for him. I was watching his face in the final moments. His hand on his brow. He kept his cool. It was kind of hard to read him. Then. Didnt want oh show panic. If you show panic, the players realize and they feel it. They were just they were calm. Its a pressure. Seven second, howard, left in that game. In the college game you have to dribble the length of the court. He didnt have much time and shot went up in plenty of time the official checked it. At the end of the game. You can see when the shot went up you look at the light around the basket. Jay wright obviously, you know, theres a the lot of things that go into a season. We should hear from jay wright shortly and the players but its just, theyre calm after the game. Theyre excited but theres just something about and seniors, again, seniors on that team. Something about seniors on a Basketball Team, which most of these big time schools dont have. Exactly. One and donees. Has a player thats declared North Carolina will probably have players that will leave and the big time schools, kansas im sure had have a player thats going to leave if he hasnt announce order declared already, but villanova you dont find that. Its rare that a villanova player will leave early. The guy that left early, that was two guys, Scotty Reynolds left early and ended up playing in europe and kyle lowry left. He probably shouldnt have and took him awhile. Its rare that players that go to villanova leave early. Thats the good thing about recruiting those players that arent going leave early but you know theyre good players because i think you really have it was proven tonight. Last night as it is right now. And that you can win with those kind of players. Yep. You just got to believe. You got to be good. And they were good. I dont know if they shot a record for shotting percentage they had one bad game, the kansas game but the defense saved them, they didnt shoot well enough, but they had an unbelievable shooting percentage throughout the game. It comes down to defense. Its amazing, three, points shot taken over the college game taken over the pro game but in the end, it comes down to defense and you got to stop the other team. 74 points for North Carolina is probably one of the lowest scores, and i think the biggest deficit they had in the tournament, North Carolina, was five, and villanova had them to ten. Had them to ten. So theres a lot of things that happened when you win. So people will remember this for a long time. Now they will live for the next 31 years for another one. I dont think jay will be coaching then. We can cut that back a little bit, howard. Yes. Its just, you like to see it with others. Its, its an interesting time out there on campus. Its great. Obviously, its great for the students. Brings a lot of excitement for students to go to the school. It is a good school. Another thing about the players for all the big five schools. They do have to reach academic levels where and a lot of these big schools. You can talk about duke and i still dont believe that everybody on talk reached the academic levels they should. North carolina, theyre still under investigation for tooters taking tests for players. These are the kind of things that dont happen at these schools and certainly didnt happy at villanova. Reporter i was inside when the final seconds wayned off that clock and it was just unbelievable to see. 5,000 students in the pavilion. There must have been tears in everyones eyes up there. It was just magical. You kind of knew it from the beginning. Every single second. Every single basket the wildcats said the place was in uproar. A great place to be and you see the evidence of that spilling out on to lancaster avenue. Law enforcement made the decision pretty early on that they would shutdown lancaster avenue like i told before you, tons and tons of Law Enforcement out there. We really havent seen any problems in terms of dis beans or anything like that. Thats because i believe Law Enforcement police are letting them do their job, come out, have fun, celebrating, lancaster avenue shut down completely on both side at this point. Thousands right now in the intersection, celebrating, no reported problems. I have a good inkling this party will go on through the night. I have a feel youre very right. I think people of all age there is celebrating in the streets there. I believe that young man should be in bed. But. Certainly not a college student. But its exciting and if villanova is your team. Once in a lifetime opportunity to be out cheering for your team and quite a win after 31 long years. All those people they cant all be students. Lets go out and party. Making sure people are ok. We did see some students having a little bit of trouble. We know celebrations comes some drinking. Im doing ok, how are you tonight. We were here in 85. Weve seen police and cruisers as we mentioned earlier on bike, some reports of police on horses. Pretty much keeping a bit of a distance allowing people to george the championship as you can see everybody wants to be on tv tonight. Were kind of trying to screen people to make sure its ok for them to be on tv tonight. Again, just a huge celebration out here. Closed down lancaster avenue which was probably a good idea to try to contain the crowds and keep an eye on the students and the people who are partying and celebrating this big win for villanova. I believe they had a plan in action, Chris Oconnell said shortly after moments after nova won, lancaster avenue was shut down and thats when, of course, the thousands of kids started pouring out into the streets to celebrate. Obviously, people are psyched and enjoying themselves. So far we havent heard of time problems. Shawnette said the police had to settle a few Little Things there. Nothing unreasonable, so far so good. Lets hope it continues. I see a couple of fire pits out there now. Lets hope it stays under control. Theres plenty of Law Enforcement out there. Theres establishments out there, i think all those people rushing in, they better card them. Theres a lot of them on lancaster avenue and theres favorites along the way people go to. Police will obviously keep an eye on that. What do you think was key really for villanova in winning it all. I think they just played great defense. They were well coached. Its easy to say when a team wins. Ive seen teams win that arent well coached. Last play shows you how well coached. At play they practiced and it worked out perfectly. Chris jenkins had to hit the shot. The pressure is on at that point. The players dont feel a lot of that with the way jay coaches these guys. So thats an important part. The key is defense. They won they won that kansas game with the defense. Thats the only game they didnt shoot well. Oklahoma, i mean, they shot it well and the defense was good. They were going to win that game the way it turned out. They played great defense, buddy hield who was probably the top five pick in the nba nine points, he probably hasnt scored nine points since eight and grade. That was amazing. Thats what it is. Thats the key. They had players that responded, that did what they were told. They had players that can make plays. Like i said, i looked at the numbers earlier and the fact they got out rounded so badly, yet they still are winning the game with ten with less than five minutes to go and still end up winning with a great shot by great play, not just a shot, its the play that you run. So theres a lot of things you can look at, but i look at the way they played defense. They played amazing. Thats what you needed to. You got to keep, if you played good defense, youre always going to have a chance to win the game. At the end of the game. They always had a chance to win the game of the just when you thought in the kansas game, that wasnt last weekend, kansas is down by three and villanova creates a turnover with seconds left and kansas cant gets the shot off and they get the ball and win the game by five points. Those are the things. You look at that. Thats not exciting to play defense. People want to see shots. But thats the way they won. They want playing hard. I dont always buy, we play the villanova way. They played the way their coach taught them and theyre playing at villanova. All players who dont get the minutes they didnt they should g get, they need a coach like that. So they wont worry about how much time they play but just that they do play and play for a winning team. I believe we can go back out to Chris Oconnell now. Reporter coming toy from the corner of lancaster avenue where you see behind me is, you may not be able to see. Behind me is police in riot gear here. The good thing is these guys arent moving. Thats because theres been no reported problems just yet. We did see how some toilet paper being burned in the middle of lancaster avenue, bottles being broken. Thats the most extent of it. Were see at least 100 Law Enforcement from dozens of jurisdictions across philadelphia area. Block, delaware, were seeing philadelphia police, township of haverford, they are thick in here. But once again, fe news, no major problems. Things are getting a little unruly in the middle of the intersection. Were seeing smoke and looks like toilet paper on fire. No major problems to report.
