Reporter ntsb board member Robert Sumwalt talked during a press Conference Today about the interview they did with 32yearold Brandon Bostian the engineer of amtrak train 188 that derailed tuesday. He recalls ringing the train bell as he went through the north philadelphia station. Thats not a normal station stop for him but hes required by regulations to sound his bell. Reporter sumwalt says the engineer told him he has no recollection of anything past that. It was an interview with a conductor in car four of the train that revealed something of great concern. That she says she heard over radio transmission between the amtrak engineer and a septa engineer. She recalled that the septa engineer had reported to the train dispatcher that he had either been hit by a rock or shot at. And that the septa engineer said that he had a broken windshield and he placed his train into emergency stop. She also believed she heard her engineer Say Something about his train being struck by something. Reporter ntsb not confirmed this information but says it has seen damage to the left hand lower part of the amtrak windshield. That conductor says next she heard rumbling and the train went over on its side. A second conductor in the last Passenger Car also details the moments before the derailment. He said he felt shaking. Then two major impacts. He said interior seats disconnected. Reporter a third conductor has not been interviewed and is still in the hospital. Meanwhile, what caused the trip to derail is still under investigation. Along with why the engineer accelerated from 70 miles an hour to 100 before it happened. I want to point out that these crew members have been traumatized through this accident that they were in and theyve not fully recovered from their injuries. Reporter and we also learned that this weekend the train will be reassembled as much as it can and tests will be conducted. Im told that could take several days. Chris, back to you. Mid pip sean Justin Zemser laid to rest in long island this morning in attendance familiar, friends and about 150 classmates from the u. S. Naval academy. Zemser was on break from school headed home to queens aboard amtrak 128. He was on the naval Sprint Football Team an member of the jewish midshipman club. Temple university tells us tonight nine people hurt in the derailment are still under their care. Doctors say five are in Critical Condition with rib and bone fractures. But doctors believe everyone will be okay. A big reason so many lives were saved is the quick action of the First Responders. At first noel a health and Human Service Program Manager was oem wasnt sure one day earlier her office underwent training for mass casualty events like this one. I actually thought it was an extension of the exercise. For a second. I was sort in denial this was actually happening. Reporter Officials Say it was the first mass employment of tourniquets by Philadelphia Police officers. The equipment was brought in a couple of years ago for this type of emergency. Tourniquets were distributed throughout our patrol divisions much these were Lessons Learned from boston and other major incidents and the mere use of them indicated the severity of injuries. Young lady who described this is clearly in inn 911 tapes shocked by what she saw. Reporter search by foot, by air and by k9 so far has turned up nothing. It happened just after 7 00 this evening at front and dauphin streets. A man was shot in the chest and died at temple hospital. So far no arrests. Health Officials Say theres no threat to customers tonight after an employee tested positive for a highly Infectious Disease at a local restaurant. Last week a server at Iron Hill Brewery in voorhees was found to have tested positive for hepatitis a. The 26yearold called out after feeling sick on may second and the restaurants owner says he has not been back to work since. The server is also said to have had very little contact with food. Managers say they have done everything to make sure everyone is safe. We wanted to make sure that our customers and and our staff are safe. So as we roll the clock ahead well have some clouds around tomorrow morning perhaps an early sprinkle but by tomorrow afternoon well be watching especially north and west for some scattered showers.
