Sniders incredible history right here in philadelphia. Ed snider, truly truly an mazing story in itself but the thing that people of this city should really realize is that terrific person he was to everybody. Whether it was players, whether because fans and people he did so much for. Without a date ed snider was the best sports owner in this town hands down. But theres so much more to the flyers ed snider. He will will be remembered to a generation as the owner of the flyers. But ed snider meant so much more to philadelphia and its fans. Ed snider was born Edward Malcom snid. Er on january 6, 1933, in washington, d. C. His First Venture in philadelphia sports was as a minority owner of the eagles in 1964. When the nhl was awarding conditional franchises in the middle of the decade, ed snider made his move. At 33 years of age i ended up starting the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. In 1967, the Philadelphia Flyers were born. He need add building for his team to play in. So ed snider built the spectrum. It was the beginning of unique relationship between a man, a team and a city that would span close to 50 years. Win seven years of buying in, and building, ed snider brought a championship to philadelphia. The flyers within the stanley cup the flyers won their first of two consecutive stanley cups. The flyers have won the second in a row its just incredible. His passion for the flyers never wavered. His vision help the team and the sport grow through different periods of transition but his contributions werent limited to wins and losses and he understood the responsibility of a professional sports team and what it has to the city it plays in. I felt i wanted to something for these kids and i really didnt know how and then i came up with the idea that maybe i could do it through hockey. In 2005, ed snider founded the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation to help inner city children with the game of hockey and life lesson. Included in the foundation, the rebuilding of four hockey rinks in the city. We were saving lives and to me nothing could be greater than that. Ed snider is also a member of six hall of fames including the hockey hall of fame. He touched millions of lives in this city. His bond with its fans was unmatched. Theres no greater love in sports than the Philadelphia Flyers and their fans. Special feeling of family perm me yates the flyers organizati organization. The last time he had senator got to see his beloved flyers was here at his home in santa mon nay california when the flyers were on the coast this new year. So follow your gut if you have an idea, take a chance and more often than not the reward will be worth the risk. Ed snider was 83 years old. Truly interesting comment there are no rewards without risk. In many sports the owners gets close to his players but nobody got as close as ed snider while they were playing or after they retire. As soon as the players met ed snider and got to know him they realized he was so special. Every time we got to see him, um, you can just feel the palings, you know, just in talking about hockey and, um, you know, he really loves the sport, loves his flyers, hes a Philadelphia Flyers. Cares so much about everybody and i think you can tell that through his work in the community, um, he didnt do it, you know, for fame or for anything, you know, other than the fact that, you know, thats trial wal was in his heart. He was such a genuine person and such a big heart end wanted to help everybody out. Theres so much more to ed snider well beyond what we can do here and we will hear more from the current and past player whos were clearly touched by ed snider. The violence was all caught on surveillance cameras as the guy was getting off a trolley at springfield mall station last week. Septa police tell us the suspect was arrested in darby on friday. A Rutgers University student has died after a shooting near the colleges newark, new jersey, campus. Prosecutors say someone shot 21yearold Shawnee Patel of toms river last night. Also, shot his roommate. A graduate of the university who is now in Critical Condition. Police say they do not think the shooting is random and theyre now search fog the killer. N Montgomery County a medical examiner is trying to determine how a Cabrini College student died. The 22yearold man was found unresponsive in a home in West Conshohocken on moore head avenue on sunday. Police say officers performed cpr and used an anti overdose drug but they were unable to revive the victim. Student has not been identified.
