Many not happy at all after septa had to take a third of its fleet out of service due to a defect on 95 of its silver line or five train cars. Packed train, you know, flint right passed in you to the fourth quarter. Really tough. People are annoyed. It was delayed just not moving at times. We were supposed to be on an express which takes 45 minutes and instead it took an hour and a half to get in to suburban station. Reporter six trains had to buy pass stations because they were already full. Many riders worry it will get worse tomorrow and in the days to come since today some commuters were still enjoying an extra day off from the fourth of july holiday. Were not going to take Regional Rail tomorrow. Tomorrow im driving. Reporter septa actually encouraging commuters to look at alternative service. Its very important especially on those stations that are just outside the city, you know, it may be tough for them to get on the train after several stops ahead of them. Reporter septa trying to figure out ways to get additional equipment and increased capacity but cannot say how long that will take. It all comes down to, you know, how much of the fleet could we do a quicker repair with versus do we have to replace these beams on every car and that can take awhile. Reporter and so what youre looking at right now is hundreds of people on oh the platform here at Jefferson Station waiting for their trains out of the city. Septa saying it could take awhile to fix these silver lin liners five train cars so septa meeting with consultants to figure out how what exactly is going on. How did it happen and why . Reporter on the phone with septa official late this afternoon he said once they get over this hump they are going to make sure they start looking at all the cars from top to bottom to make sure theres nothing else going on. Now, we were speak to go the official for an update on our past report, and that focused other than cracks. It was back in the summer of 2011 when the brand new sleek silver liner fives were being rolled out. Septa told us only 30 were on the rails but the discovery of what the authority called hairline cracks was a cause for worry. The reason were concerned is its not supposed to be there. Reporter it certainly wasnt. Not in a fleet of highly anticipated and very much needed Regional Rail cars with a 247 million price tag. Septa toll fox 29 investigators it was one of their inspectors who found the crack while looking over silver liners in hyundai south philly plant. A search was launched for other cracks and they were found in two more cars. They were all in the same spot just above the jack pad used as a cushion to lift the car to do work. Unlike the cracks found in the big support beam that have benched the 120 car fleet septa argued in 2011 this was not a major issue. It he is cored us into the south philly plant and argued do you believe there are anye design of these brand new and expensive vehicles at this point . We do boteen assured that the are no structural, safety ore i. Reporter now, on the phone the septa official again said no other cracks beyond the three that we reported on were ever found. He did say the agency found it was too much heat that was used in the welding process back then that likely caused contraction and later those cracks that we reported on.
