Skyfox over a tragic accident in south philadelphia. Police say a cargo container fell on a car and killed a man. It happened around 12 30 this afternoon on the 3300 block of south christmas four columbus boulevard. Medic pronounced man, 52, dead at the scene police are continuing their investigation into what went wrong. Also on the 3300 block of columbus boulevard, seven tractor trailers go up in flames. Fire crews got the call around 10 30 last night. They were able to put the flames out about an hour later. Fortunately, no one was hurt. To night investigation into how that fire began continues. Police say a 29yearold man was heading east on east lea boulevard in wilmington on friday night when the driver of a dark colored suv hit him near north market street. The driver did stop at first according to police but then took off. The victim has serious but nonlife threatening injuries. Tonight into new castle delaware friends and family are remembering a woman and three cats filled killed yesterday after a car crash. The boss wasnt around when we visited but a worker told us they distribute cocoa beans. Told us the beans can smell a bit funky as he put it. I followed up on a neighborhood call to the city health department. They came out, inspected and issued a notice of violation. Turns out an exhaust fan was malfunctioning. It happened back on july 6th but the video just now being released once inside the man took two whole cash registers and made off with them. Our joyce evans joins us now to explain. Joyce . Reporter iain, many people tell us its actually quite a surprise especially after decades of frustration over a lack of funding and what appeared to be a lack of interest in sickle cell research. It is a genetic defect in the shape of blood cells theyre not round theyre shaped like a sickle some of them and it affects hundreds of thousands of mostly black and brown people around the world. Its effects may be deadly. If this drug can reduce pain and reduce the frequency of pa pain, then its going to be huge. Reporter it took 20 years but hematologist robin email lower director of 93 hours hospital for children Sickle Cell Program says it looks much more promising for her patients than just some other drug. The fact that the initial study included children is very very exciting. It seems like the side effects are not going to be severe the. Reporter hopefully making it an option that more patients five years and older might be able to tolerate. Patients like 17yearold a maya melton who happens to be suffering the excruciating effects of Sickle Cell Disease today. She gets pain. Shes unable to walk at times. Headaches, um, she loses a lot of her blood volume. Which require her to stay hydrated and thats another hard thing for teenager. Her mom and the teen are thrilled about this new drug. But just how many patients will benefit is unknown. As well as if the medicine will lessen damagin damaging he oak s of sickle cell on patients organs overtime. I dont think its clear yet from the data. How much this drug will impact on the organ damage that we see in sickle cell but by far the most debilitating problem that patients with sickle cell face is the terrible recurrent pain. Theres a lot of Research Going on and there are other drugs in the pipeline, and i think that this also gives all hope that more and more things will start coming through for this Patient Population thats so desperately needs new treatment. A lot of hope. New drug is not a cure but dr. Miller says she is hopeful about new research that may make bone Marrow Transplant an option for more sickle cell patients and safer. Dawn.
