WTXF Good Day Philadelphia At 7A March 14, 2017

Seeing some heavy accumulation it is not boring. You have a little bit of everything. We have been calling it the variety pack of precipitation, because you are getting any changes back and forth, sleet to all snow back to sleet again, rain mixes in and for those who are asking on social media it is different temperatures in different layers of the atmosphere because, we have got cloud up here and it is goes through different layers. It changes as it comes down. It didnt stay as cold as we thought it would, so some warmer air over running, and we can go into much more detail if you wish. It is so unpredictable sometimes. Either way, good day it is tuesday march 14th, 2014. I necessity what you are thinking whenever we have snow shows like this we think of mike because he is known for wearing his sweaters during snowstorms. He sent us this picture. He said he cant wait to come back soon and said it is bummer he is missing out but he is wearing this sweater. He is smiling. He is getting out with dealing with weather in the cold. Getting out early. We have a plan here. Okay. He doesnt to have miss. He have weve got him right here. He didnt getaway with it after all. So. We can do something with that. He said i was the one with the big head. Look at this, seriously. We will figure out what to name this guy. Mike on the stick. Big head mike. Mike pop. So then, you have to have some arms with it too. This is hard part. So you have this one. If you have been to the station there is a picture and we make fun of him all the time. Awkwardly posing like this. If we have mike on the stick you have to have awkward hand. Then there is another one where we are trying to figure out how this goes, who does their hand like that, like what is that. Like scare crow in wizard of oz. Yes, then he will give thaw look. This could also be when he is trying to push away his coffee that the boss doesnt like to have in the shot. That is true. He is. Pushing it this way. We will do something with mike and we will reveal in a bit. Is that why he sent me a little gift a week ago and he knew weather was coming with a little note. We will figure out what this is. In the meantime give us an update. Well listen i dont care what you are getting it is a one out of 10. We have a got snow, sleet, wind, we have bus stop buddy even though he has no school today. He is dreaming of making a snow man and some of us, will be able to do that. Heres a look at the variety of precipitation, to the north , as predicted, it is snow, in between the heavy rain in south jersey and southern delaware we have that mixture of sleet and snow, and rain, and all of it is a big mess. Look at temperatures right at freezing in philadelphia and wilmington that is at surface. Then we have, 20s to the north of us, upper 30s and 40 s, 40s at the shore in Atlantic City and in wildwood, so significant snow north and west, we still have someplaces that will get double digit accumulations. The wind is a huge factor in the storm, as well, 40 to 60 mile an hour wind gusts, so our forecast, snowfall for today, huge accumulations to the north of us and a lot less as you go further and further south. Here to explain this a little bit more Scott Williams, who is outside in the pelting sleet this morning, how does it feel. Hi there sue, sleet just continues to pound my face here, in olde city. Right on the sidewalk we have an accumulation of sleet. It started out this morning as snow. We have one to 2 inches of that snow, on top of it, we have that icy sleet. So right now you can take a live look at Market Street and you can see that were watching a few cars go by, septa busts have been going by but it is just a slushy mess right now on Market Street here in olde city. Those temperatures have been hovering right around freezing but Road Conditions, vary across the area, bob kelly, you have details on that. Scottie, good morning. 7 05. Folks looking outside front door it is not that bad, not that deep and they think they will venture out but we have a little bit of everything. Road are either wet, snow covered, as we just showed you the sleet, ice and handful of accidents. This is a live look at i95 right here near academy road where this fellow went off roadway and down in the grass median. That is what ace head live look at 42 freeway, wet, grass is snow covered and it is slush on the on and off ramps. We have a fire at 15th and chestnut, and heres a pick sent to us here it is flint stone mobile. Get it, from either side and the feet up the middle there. And Regional Rail lines, no service on the cynwyd line, and patco, new Jersey Transit trains, running on a modified schedule. No new Jersey Transit buses, dart buses are running with delays, 102 suspended and there are 55 bus routes all together on the septa system, on a detour because of the weather conditions all details there on septas web site at septa. Org. Alex and thomas back to you. Our crews have the area covered. Lauren johnson in Delaware County, jen fred in lawrence ville, new jersey. Karen hepp is outside, on the streets checking out roadways but first we will go to steve keeley in bethlehem where they could see quite a bit of snow. Special get this morning, hey there steve. Reporter normally we have sunrise but with this zero visibility storm it still looks like night fall. We have kevin here who happens to have the cleanest car in this blizzard, he just drove a couple miles. It looks like he pulled out of the garage he had in the carport all night. They think everybody is not working. You are saying business as usual at your office. We have special meetings, we closed the building for production and stuff to keep employees safe. Reporter you had to have these meetings. We have some meetings, yeah , we will be fine. Reporter when you left here you filled up with gas, getting coffee did you think there was a chance this sheetz , wawa up here wouldnt be opened or did you think this will not stay closed during a blizzard. I thought they would be closed. Everything else was closed, but when i came by lights were on i figured i would take my chances and get it. Reporter you have an suv. It looks clean. How was the drive so far. Drive has been good, actually. I went up to the building and they are plowing the lot for us, so i came back down and grabbed coffee, but yeah, drive has been good, they are been doing their job. Reporter tough guy, no gloves, no hat pumping gas, sneakers, no boots but you have a scarves. Yes. Have a safe drive, i hope that meeting is real important because who has meetings in the blizzard but important won kevin, thanks for your time. Appreciate it. Look at how clean that carries he was surprised this place was open. Place we wanted to go live this morning all closed. This diner that weathers every storm 24 hours, city view diner shut down. Look at the American Flag blowing and again we have ice, and you can see in the light, the snow, so snowflakes are still tiny. Were expecting huge snowflakes. They were saying we could get three or 4 inches an hour and that is how we will get 2 feet National Weather Service Updated their forecast and said hey, instead of 2 feet now just 22 inches. So we are at half foot in the Lehigh Valley and we will not get any mix. We are getting straight snowfall and that is why it is getting deep. Where im walking right now has been plowed twice and look at what they are doing. And i guess, when you get those big tires and big tread and spinning out he is filling out. He will not fit in the gas pumps. Somebody has to be opened, to gas all these plows. Good thing they are opened, but boy it is starting to kick up. Im facing wind. As lauren says when this hits you in the face you feel extra stupid for standing out here. Sue serio you are good being very generous. I remember arithmetic. Would i give this minus four. Not even a one. You are too kind to bad weather blizzards. Shes changing it right now , shes trying to make a negative sign. Im trying to turn mean it is impossible. Look at you. Where are you going. Going to get a snow cone. He is determined to make snow cones. Lets check with karen hepp, shes riding around in the sit in the northeast section, still karen. I am, im willing go through streets up here. There is a lot of people i see on the big thoroughfares but then give you some neighborhood. There is someone cleaning a car off. We have everyone over here they have put windshield wipers up so they dont get frozen to the windows. That is such a problem when that happens. We are seeing that. You can see definite snow covered streets here. Even though they have made some passes and clearly made a pass on this road, we are not getting much in the city. We know that but it is still a mess and still icy, still snowy and it is still, you know, it is passable but not something you want to do quickly and fast. Lets come up to this major road to give you a shot what it looks like. There is someone getting ready with their pickup truck. A lot of folks staying home but people still had work. Heres castor avenue. Take a quick look and see what it looks like here. Plows, snowplows, gone by and they have changed trash trucks over. Brian, do you want to Say Something to me . There is more plows. Take a look at these guys over here. They have a plow train that is going by. So they are doing they are best to keep up but we have a whole bun to much go with this storm. This is sort of the latest Vantage Point up here, police, i saw a couple Police Officers , over at our local, i think it was mayfair diner. We had three cars there my goodness. That was loud. All right, that is latest from here back inside to you. Overall not too bad, side streets dont seem so bad as well, karen. Karens focusing on figur ing this out. Peace out. Lauren johnson is keeping track of conditions in the Delaware County. Shes in follow come with the latest, sleet still coming down, lauren. It is a very slushy, gross little mixture here. In the frozen though. So, probably will be because they keep, plowing over in this area. I wave this guy down and say, come on over, what do you think of the Road Conditions. It is terrible. I just took out a sign with my truck. You hit something. What happened. Hydroplaned, it is pretty bad out there. Reporter standing here since i guess we got here at 3 00 and we have seen plows go up and down. Where were you busy road or side street. Franklin avenue, a few blocks from macdade avenue. Reporter dit scare you. No. Reporter what do you have on there. A snow blower. Reporter where are you heading. To aston. Reporter to do what. More snow blowing. Reporter what did you stop at wawa for. Gas for snow blower. Reporter be careful. Yeah, be careful out there, brand new truck all that damage now. I just bought you the on saturday. Reporter so or toy hear that. Were okay that is what matters. It is road are still bad. Reporter thinks most people we have seen. We have thought people would stay inside. People are thinking it is not as much snow so they are coming out. They look out and see an inch or two but they dont realize it is freezing. Yes. Reporter thank you, good luck to you. We have in the been out to venture, and he hit a sign in his brad new truck. So, be very, very careful. Yes. You can see that then. Reporter so many people thinking it is not that bad, but it is still, you have to be careful. Inn it doesnt take much, with a slushy stuff, and if you are heading out prime example. Jennifer fredrick, is checking conditions in lawrenceville, Mercer County. Jen. Hi guys, i guess the question is where the heck are you going . A lot of things are still closed, because of all of the warnings and all of storm warnings. This is lawrenceville, new jersey, we are about a little bit north of trenton, an hour from you guys. The road are now, a little bit more snow covered, just 35 minutes ago, it was completely , black type, because of a combination of fact that it had been a lot of sleet. Tons of plows have been through here. And believe it or not within the hour we have seen a salting operation. That is how little, i should say, and route one, Mercer County in mercerville, new jersey. But, like sue said, we will see all kind of conditions, and now we are seeing a little bit more in terms of the white stuff, covering, but as you walk around. It still feels sleety. Whatever this precipitation is , it is bouncing off of you, hurts your face, very windy. It is, cold outside. So again, the question is, if you have to be out somewhere, you should have already been there for now. Venturing. And, and thinks the war of it. We were talking about this it will start to get bad, around 8 00 oclock look at what time it is. As you can see even the road are still snow covered here in new jersey. Some people still need their morning cup of coffee. Yes, do you have a coffee maker. Yes, it is broken. It is broken. Yes. We have three tea bags in there. Hang in there. It is only just beginning. We have been seeing some of the conditions, here, in new jersey. So now were checking in Atlantic City. Different type of weather. We have been talking about how coastal area, getting a lot of rain and coastal flooding there. So joining us now by phonies steve shapiro, communication director from new Jersey Department of transportation. Good morning to you. Good morning. We are taking a look at Atlantic City right now. We are seeing rain. Camera shaking, a lot of wind, we are seeing there in the coastal area. Coastal areas are getting more rain there, and it is going to get more wind as the storm progresses. It looks like the forecasters have, moved that rain up a little further are north then they originally expected. So south jersey, getting more rain and snow, but central, new jersey, north jersey where it is snowing it is coming down hard and the road are passable but starting to get snow coverage in north and central new jersey. That is what most of the crew are at this morning. So what are the pennsylvania 24 hours been like and is what ahead for next 12 hours here. Well, we have been preparing for this storm, since, the weekend, and our crews, activated overnight and it is working throughout the night. We have more than 2600 salt spreaders and plows, statewide , all over the road, working to keep road passable, and, throughout the day and even after the snow stops, they continue to work and push back, that snow, from the shoulders and ramps, and, turning to salt and make sure that the road are safe, and clear and get everything down to blacktop. Earlier the guy came up and he ran to the sign so it is still kind of slippery out there. It is something that people need to be careful of. You know, were add veiing people if you dont need to be out stay at home. Road conditions are going to be challenging today with the wind blowing, snow can blow back on to the road, and the mixture of weather, can make for a very slick, with low temperatures and rain for that snow coming down. So really best betties to stay home, if you can, if you have to be outside on the roads you will want to slow down, give some space between you and other vehicles, and stay back from the spreaders and plow trains and let them do the job to get the road clear for everyone. Real quick any restrictions we should know about quickly here. We do have speed restrictions continuing on the turnpike and delaware Memorial Bridge up to 8a, 35 miles an hour, so from 8a up to George Washington bridgette is 45 miles an hour. On the parkway reverse, from cape may up up to brick, 45 miles an hour speed restriction and brick north to the new york border it is 35 miles an hour. All right. Steve shapiro with nj dot, my gosh you know what im saying. We know, we got it thanks, steve. Thank you, please be safe out there. Sue, i will get ready to get outside because mike has got to enjoy this weather. Get a taste. People are send nothing names. Current name two people sent this in mike jerrickstick. I like it. And, we will be measuring, we will be measuring not only snow but ice accumulation, the way things are going with this mix of sleet, and snow that has been falling in many places, long the infamous i95 corridor and blue coming south and then coming further north, it has become very changeable. We started talking about variety pack of precipitation at 3 30. It is still the rain we are seeing down to the south is very, very heavy and snow as predict is increasing in intensity to the north of us because we are now getting to the period of time where whatever kind of precipitation you are getting is becoming more intense. Around concord you see that dark blue there. Just snow or sleet and snow it is falling heavier there. Little later in pottstown but around schuylkill and norristown it is getting heavier. It depend where you are, very heavy rain where it is raining , particularly at new jersey shore right now. This situation continues, with this intensity, through the next couple of hours, and then it looks like by noon it is for the most part steady pre sip will be out of here and we will see wrap around moisture but it will be colder , so, Scott Williams is outside. We have been talking about this too. Whatever we have now we will finish up i think every where, with all snow, because this storm will draw in that colder eras it exits from to the north east. Absolutely sue those temperatures have been critical not only at surface but aloft because right now we still have that sleet mixture, across the olde city and philadelphia area but take a look at the snow clinging to this particular tree. It isized over and hardened because of the sleet that we have. Look who we have we have alex holley who decided to come outside. It is not me, it is mike. We have mike, outside. What is mike doing. Well, since he could not be here we want to make sure he is part of the show and he gets to enjoy this lovely weather like you. He loves snow. Originally plan was to have him to see how high snow comes up. But we are getting mixture and things are different. We will see what happens. So i will see him stay. I will stick this in here. Hopefully stay up and we will keep checking on him. We need to get him some clothes. I will work on that. Take care of him now i know it is windy. Find some gloves, scarves, sweater, Something Like that. That is alex holley, and of course, mike jerrick here. Look at the
