[livia] its also where this years winners of the safe rides saves lives contest live and go to school. [david] hello, im david. Taylor. Hi taylor. And . Grace. Grace. Mary. Hi mary. Nice to meet the three of you. [livia] the homemade video taylar, grace, and mary produced on distracted driving took first place. As part of their prize, a professional video crew will help them turn their idea into a psa, a Public Service announcement, that will air on national tv. We have some storyboards that weve taken from your already beautifully done video that weve seen. And we use these so we can structure what were going to be shooing today. A lot of this to make sure that we dont miss a shot. A lot of it is just to make sure we have continuity and that we all understand what were doing, cause well wanna be on the same page. So its about kelsey, and her two friends. And her friends are at school, at their lockers, and theyre talking about going to a party that night. Theyre all excited for this party. And really they invite more friends to come with them. So we, you know, we have a big car, but we dont have quite enough seat belts. Kelsey does not use a seatbelt. So, you know, were driving, listening to music, having a good time and kelsey pulls out her phone and shows it to her friend. And distracts the driver. And we drift into oncoming traffic and get hit in a crash. Kelsey ends up dying. [livia] but the teens added a twist. [kelsey voiceover] dear mom and dad, im sorry for everything. [livia] throughout the psa, we see shots of kelsey writing a letter. The letter in the end is kind of kelsey writing from heaven. And shes apologizing to her parents and everyone for all the pain that shes caused. That she shouldve worn her seatbelt and shes really sorry. And thats where we kind of ended it. We go to a black screen and, you know, dont let this happen to you. [livia] a recent tragedy at their school was part of the inspiration for the psa. So last year, we had a student get in a one car crash. He was on his way to work, and went off the side of the road, and ended up hitting a tree. And he passed away. And he, he wouldve been a senior this year. He was a really great person. And it really impacted the community. Impact on the community was very much part of the message the girls wanted to get across in their psa. Well show you how it turned out, when teen kids news continues. Well be right back. Action soft but exciting and energetic music [announcer] closed captioning is brought to you by. fun and exciting rock music [katie] sophomores grace, mary, and taylar submitted the winning entry in this years safe rides saves lives contest. The contest is sponsored by the National RoadSafety Foundation in partnership with fccla. That stands for family, career, and Community Leaders of america. Its an organization that gives students the opportunity to use the skills they learn in family and Consumer Science classes to explore future careers. And action giggles im starving. Well i think they learned an amazing amount. I think they learned how a psa is made and how much work it is for a production for a 55 second slot. We spent the entire day doing it. Cut. Its good. That was nice. It was different. I laughs i mean its hard cause im not a, none of us are great actors. And so it was weird to have to come into it and act. Like it was different for us. Ok, so that was great the way you turned, about my house at 7. You looked at the camera. Yeah. It was fun. It was really fun. Its a little weird when you have four different cameras on you. You have our teacher taking pictures and a camera recording another camera. girls giggle here we go, standing by. Rolling . And action alright, lets go lets go come on it takes a lot lo0ger than i thought. Every scene that you do theres so many more takes that it just takes a lot longer and its very precise. With everything they do. So they try an make everything as perfect as they can. Do you want to try another exposure sean or were you happy with that exposure . [sean] i was happy but ill do it again. Do it one more time then well just do a tight shot in case the tilt down doesnt work. I think when we have messages from kids to other kids, i think it means a lot more to them. I think it was very emotional for them in the making of it and people that see it. So people, all people need to be reminded of distracted driving. So, it was a good, good day. And cut [girls] and thats a wrap giggles before we show you the finished psa, heres how you can find out how to enter next years contest. Go to the contest tab at teenlane. Org. And to learn more about what fccla does, check out fcclainc. Org. For teen kids news, im katie. And now the World Television premiere of a letter we hope never gets written. [kelsey voiceover] dear mom and dad, im sorry for everything. We had been looking forward to the party all day. It was all we could talk about. You always told me not to be in a car with a distracted driver. But i never thought i would be the distraction. We thought it was a good idea to carpool, but there were too many of us and not enough seat belts. We were all just having a good time and listening to music. She took her e she wa what all the noise and exci the distractions we were causing ruined so many lives. I realized the crash would affect you. But didnt think it would affect so many in the community. Everyone lost someone that day, a friend, a sister, a child. I want you to know that i never meant for any of it to happen. Please. Share our story. I dont want anyone to have to go through what you guys did. Im so sorry. I love you. Kelsey. Next on teen kids news, ill tell you why you should start now to make next summer meaningful. My make the grade report is coming up. When applying to college, students are often asked how they spent their summers during high school. If you can say that you had a job, that certainly shows maturity and responsibility. But summer jobs may be hard to find. There is another way to get work experience. And while it doesnt come with a paycheck, the experience can be priceless. Im talking about internships. These are programs designed to give students a taste of different work environments. Government agencies, museums, tv and radio stations, even Internet Companies often have internship programs. But they fill up early. So dont wait. Be proactive. If youre interested in government, contact the local offices of elected representatives. Love the arts . Go to your museum and ask for the volunteer office. If youre interested in medicine, ask your doctor if he or she knows of any opportunities at the local hospital. An internship not only shows colleges you are interested in a career, it shows you know how to go after it with make the grade, im christin. Fifty us states. The year was 1774, two years before the declaration of independence and New Hampshire declared their own independence from great britain. Their motto at the time was live free or die and its still the state motto today. [eric] another revolutionary first for New Hampshire is pictured here on the state flag. In 1776, the warship raleigh was the first to fly the new american flag. New hampshire is home to many other firsts. The first potato was grown here. New hampshire is known as the Granite State and its because their number one Natural Resource is granite. This is a particularly good stone for building bridges, houses, even statues. And although the colony was first established for fishing, they quickly learned what the really had going on. Those nine stars around the border signify an additional claim to fame. After the revolutionary war, our new constitution required approval by nine of the 13 states. New hampshire made it happen by being the ninth state to ratify the famous document. A walk off home run is when a team wins a game on a home run in the teams final at bat. Now this has happened twice in world series play to win a world series. The first time it happened was in 1960, where in the bottom of the ninth of game seven, pirates second baseman, bill mazeroski, hit a home run off yankees relief pitcher ralph terry. That was the Pirates Third world series crown. In 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays won their second consecutive world series on a walk off three run world series winning home run by joe carter. Im matt with teen kids news. exciting and energetic music coming up. Another great a video from the website hooplaha. Its one you really shouldnt miss, so stick around. Teen kids news will be right back. Teens today are more stressed than ever. While we cant avoid things like grades, tests, and social pressures, we can learn to deal with the stress they cause. As emily reports, one technique is yoga. calm and serene music with me is brenda schnable. Shes a yoga therapist. Hi, how are you . Hi emily so what exactly is yoga . Yoga is a mind body practice that was created about 8,000 years ago in ancient india. And how can yoga help us deal with stress . Yoga helps you on a physical, mental, and emotional level, builds your selfconfidence, and when you feel more confident, physically and mentally, you dont get stressed out as easy. And it also helps you build awareness of whats important to you and what triggers your stress so that when you see yourself in that situation you can walk away from the drama and not react to it. Interesting. So when i get stress, i feel it in my neck and shoulders. How can yoga help us deal with that tightness . Thats very common, cause we all get stressed and our shoulders start to creep up and especially when were looking over at a computer and our eyes are getting all strained. The first thing you need to do is just relax those shoulders down. Thats. Yeah and then you want to stretch all sides of your neck. So take your chin to your chest and just gently roll side to side. To stretch the side of the neck. And then to stretch the front and back as well as the shoulders, bring the chin to the chest and the back of the hands together. Take a deep inhale and open the arms out to the sides. Squeeze the shoulder blades together, lift the chin, and exhale, and youre going to stretch the back of the neck again. And when you open up, you stretch the front of the throat. And how does that feel . Very good. Im already feeling less stressed. Awesome thank you. Youre welcome. With yoga and you, im emily. When you have a very serious illness like cancer, you really need to find friends to help you get through it. And theres an organization that can help with that. Heres this weeks video from the folks at hooplaha. calm and and tranquil music [lily] i think evelyn and i will be friends for quite a while. My name is evelyn rosales, im 19 years old, and i was diagnosed with ewings sarcoma, a bone and tissue cancer, at the age of 16. The next few years were a bit hectic, a bit crazy, because i would go in and out from the hospital for my chemo and surgeries from left to right, and it was just really crazy. I wasnt able to go to school. I was home schooled for a year. No worries now is a Nonprofit Organization thats centered on improving the lives of kids and teenagers that suffer from terminal illnesses, and the pair program is a specific program that brings together patients and volunteers from the l. A. Area to meet up on monthly events and outings to help improve the social normalcy of the lives of the patients. Evelyn and i met for the first time in june last year at a meet up, and then weve been meeting on and off for the past eight months, and keeping touch in between by texting, facebook, all that fun stuff. I was really impressed from the very beginning. We had an event at the sculpture gardens at ucla and everyone was kinda crowding around the sculpture gardens, but lily and evelyn went off by themselves and went on a little adventure around ucla as lily showed evelyn the campus. And i thought it was a really cool friendship that started right from the beginning. My friendship with lily has made my life better because im able to go to her when im feeling down. She reassures me and she brightens up my day when im feeling selfconscious about myself. In the beginning, she was looking for a big sister type of relationship. But we found out very quickly that shes actually older than i am by a few months. So we, instead of having the big sister, little sister relationship, its really just been a straight friendship. So we bonded over a lot of things, from both going through our freshman year of college, and we had a lot of time talking about those type of experiences. With just a few words from lily, it makes life a bit better and makes life easier on me, and shes just a great friend. Oh yeah. Put it in your car. Well have more Great Stories from our friends at hooplaha on future shows. For teen kids news, im daniella. exciting and energetic music you may not think veggies belong in a pastry, but get ready to think again. My recipe is next on teen kids news. Well be right back. Is a college for those interested in becoming a chef or working in food services. So when they come up with a recipe, you know its going to be good. Lets see whats cooking this week. The word pastry usually brings to mind dessert, but im going to show you how to make a savory pastry. That means not sweet or a dessert. Lets get started. Heres what youll need. From a to z, ive got the vegetables asparagus, squash, and zucchini. Ive diced the squash and cut the asparagus. What youll do is youll take these vegetables and put them into a bowl. With the asparagus, youll add extra virgin olive oil, about two tablespoons, or just enough to cover the vegetables. Salt and pepper, for seasoning. Then youll mix with a spoon. Once the vegetables are coated with the oil and the salt and pepper, you can now place them onto the cookie sheet. I used parchment paper to line this baking sheet. Makes the cleanup a lot easier. Youll want to arrange the vegetables onto one layer so that they cook evenly. Next, youll want to put them into an oven. 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. While the vegetables are cooking, we can now cut our pastry dough. You can pick this up at the local supermarket. It comes rolled just like this in the freezer section. Were not gonna use the entire roll today, just about half. To be safe, im using a pizza cutter. Ill cut it in half, just like that, and save that for later. Im gonna cut this section right in half, and then im gonna make rectangles. You can make triangles, squares, or circles. Its up to you. On another baking sheet, like the one we used for the vegetables, im going to take the squares and place them neatly about an inch or two inches in between each one. Now we wait for the vegetables to cook. Well clean up the station a little, and get the vegetables ready. Ah, these look delicious. These are pretty hot, so were just gonna let these cool. While theyre cooling, well go ahead and spread the goat cheese on our goat cheese bites. Just gonna take a little bit here, about the size of your thumb, and put it right in the middle. Take the backside of your spoon. You can press the goat cheese down just a little to kind of make a boat, there. Its tricky to work with, but trust me, its worth it. Absolutely delicious. You wont find this in a dessert. Now that thats finished, youre still waiting for your vegetables to cool, you can clean your hands. Now its time for our vegetables. Im gonna use another spoon here and just pick up a little bit of the vegetables, and put it right on the middle of that goat cheese. Make sure to pick up each different type of vegetable. Alright. Now the vegetables are on the goat cheese, we can put it in the oven. Im gonna put it back into the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until theyre golden brown. Lets check our puff pastry bites. Nice golden brown, and hopefully delicious. These are best served warm, so im gonna go ahead and put them on this plate here. Be careful, the pan is really hot. There you have it. Goat cheese vegetable puff pastry bites. A great snack thats healthy and delicious. At the Culinary Institute of america, for teen kids news, im fletch.
