And Senior Citizens. Good evening. Im jan jeffcoat. And im derek mcginty. The weekend finally is here. Wouldnt it be great if all this gorge weather we had today would just stick around . A gorgeous weather we had today would just stick around . Tomorrow will be a repeat performance, good news for any beachgoers watching now. If youre heading down the shore starting tomorrow, you have a great day in store, 79 degrees for the high in ocean city, sunshine. Sunday theres a thunderstorm, just a slight chance late in the day. Its also going to get warmer, 83 degrees for the high sunday. Its monday that we have the increased chance for the showers and thunderstorms, same deal rehoboth beach, 85 sunday, 84 monday with more thunderstorms arriving on monday. We should be able to keep it dry for the most part at the shore for the entire weekend. Back in the immediate metro area a dry day on saturday. As youre waking up, it should be pleasant, 65 to 71 at 7 a. M. , already up into the low 80s by 11 00 for some of us. Ill give you more details when to expect the thunderstorms to arrive in your neighborhood coming up in the first alert sevenday forecast. In the meantime d. C. Mayor vincent gray on his way out of office. He lost that democratic primary this spring. As of next january, hes done. That didnt stop the mayor from vetoing several items from the City Councils proposed budget, items he said hurt residents and the future of the city. Mola lenghi spoke with some of the residents the mayor says would be impacted. Mayor gray says he could not in good conscience sign a budget that hurts seniors and taxes people trying to stay and get in shape and be healthy. Dega sharari was not sure if co fitness would survive much longer after d. C. City council recently included and approved a tax on gym memberships in their new budget. Then she got a call. One of our members actually called and said guess what, the mayor vetoed the tax on gym memberships. When i heard that, i was thrilled. Thats the last message we want to send. We want to send a message that says we want you to be as fit as you possibly can and were not going to hamper that by imposing a tax. Reporter along with vetoing the socalled gym or yoga tax in councils budget mayor gray took issue with what he called councils gutting of tax cuts, Property Tax Relief promised to Senior Citizens. I think seniors pay enough. I think for a lot of seniors its a problem in terms of paying their bills, more so than people whose salaries are increasing or will increase. I think this was a terrible budget and the mayor did the right thing. Reporter Council Member tommy wells was the only one to vote against the councils budget. This raised taxes in some areas, cut taxes for businesses and really the budget did not make sense. Reporter council scheduled a vote for a veto override for monday and with 12 out of 13 Council Members in favor of the overall budget, it seems unlikely that gray will sway the four Council Members it would take to uphold his vetoes. Im on the other side of budget on both of those issues. I would like to get rid of the growing tax and fund the Senior Citizen thing, but a budget is made up of consensus. In addition to health and fitness and Senior Citizens, mayor gray also cited in his veto what he describes as coynesses dramatic underfunding of the d. C. s councils dramatic underfunding of d. C. s streetcar system and gray is now asking council to delay their summer recess for 30 days in order to work with him on a compromised budget. Almost 10 months now since aaron alexis massacred a dozen people at the Washington Navy yard and the d. C. Police department has an after action report, an 82 page review of what went right and wrong that terrible day. Among the findings . When First Responders charged into that building last september, in some ways they were flying blind. They didnt have to be. Remember this chilling video of Navy Yard Shooter aaron alexis stalking for victims inside building 197 . Well, the police after action report said this very same video in realtime would have been invaluable to the 117 First Responders who charged into the building that morning, but they couldnt see it because a private Security Guard had locked himself inside the video control room and didnt call the cops. Almost as bad, even the horse. Officials who knew about that control Law Enforcement officials who knew about that control room never bothered to send anyone to check it out and remember how the cops thought there may have been two shooters . That, too is blamed in part on a lack of access to internal cameras. The report recommends whoever is in charge of those cameras need much better training and First Responders need to find it out right away who that person is. That wasnt the only communications breakdown. Turns out the navy yard has its own emergency call center, but those calls which may have had Vital Information were not relayed to d. C. Police. Recommends there include possible joint training exercises between emergency call units and closer relations before theres an emergency. Heres something else. Many navy yard workers were not allowed to take their mobile phones into the building. Its a security clearance thing, but that means they couldnt call for help or receive emergency alerts. Recommendation, rethink that policy except in the most classified environments. Another problem that day, believe it or not, too many cops, some selfdispatched to the scene, many from other jurisdictions all flooding into the navy yard desperately wanting to help, but instead just adding to the crowding and confusion. Recommendation, all Police Departments should clarify their policies on self dispatching. Mpd, for example, doesnt allow it. Now the reports authors take pains to say theyre not about second guessing officials who had to make split second decisions in such a deadly situation, but they do offer dozens of other recommendations to help make those decisions better or if or perhaps i should say when Something Like this happens again. A Prince Georges County Police Officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Corporal Michael Brown was arrested by d. C. Police last night after they say he pulled a gun outside the howard theater. At the time he was off duty. The 12 year veteran is currently suspended with pay pending administrative hearing. Also Prince Georges County police canvassed an Upper Marlboro neighborhood tonight looking for two men who broke into a home tuesday night on calverton drive, demanded cash and shot a person inside. The victim is in critical but stable condition. If you have any information, please call crime solvers, 1 866411tips. You can remain anonymous. We now know the name of the young camper who died when a storm hit tuesday at the River Valley Ranch in carroll county, maryland. His name was Justin Nicholas diggs, he was 12 years old from baltimore. Justin was killed by falling tree limbs snapped by the sudden violent winds when camp staffers were trying to move the kids from an open pavilion into the main hall about 150 yards away. A handful of other campers were hurt also. A little boy died last week at a group home in Anne Arundel County and tonight state officials want to know if perhaps the care received there had anything to do with it. The boy was 10 years old and developmentally i disabled. State officials are looking into developmentally disabled. State officials are looking into how he died. They were in the process of moving out the 10 children that lived there following allegations of neglect. The Environmental Health experts are trying to find out if something inside a building in oxon hill is making Office Workers sick. It is a 10story complex on oxon hill road called the constellation centre. A lot of irs workers work there. The Agency Confirms employees raised the alarm about recent illnesses, even deaths, that some suspect might be linked to conditions in the building. The Management Firm said it just learned about the concerns yesterday and immediately they called in experts for testing. Tonight serious questions of in competence and danger at our own Government Research Lab Facilities after a desperate move by the centers for Disease Control when it was revealed yet another deadly virus had been mishandled. Three times in less than a month reports uncovered the centers for Disease Control has mishand amed or misplaced dangerous mishandled or misplaced dangerous or in some cases deadly germs from government labs. Ive lost sleep over it. Im working around the clock to make sure we do Everything Possible to resolve it. As a result two labs were shut down and shipment was stopped of other pathogens. Just today it was revealed workers somehow lost track of the deadly h5n1 influenza virus or samples of bird flu. A shipment left the super tight security at cdc atlanta headquarters to a lab run in the u. S. Department of agriculture in athens, georgia. Officials say both departments are highly secured and nobody was at risk. I was stunned and appalled this could have happened and there could have been this del this comes as six vials of smallpox virus were found at this Storage Facility at National Institutes of health in bethesda. Tests revealed some of the virus was alive even though it could have been stored there in the 1950s. Just last month the cdc reported lab workers may have been exposed to live anthrax because of sloppy procedures. For now dr. Freeden has pped a point person, dr. Michael bell, to oversee laboratory safety. This is a symptom. Its not the little mistake that were concerned about in this instance. Were concerned about what is the framework that everyone is using and that framework includes rapid reporting. It includes an understanding of the chain of communication and who you tell when. The big question still is what is the cdc doing to prevent this from happening again . Cbs news reports they dont even know if there are other dangerous pathogens somehow misplaced in the system or in other labs. So right now they are frantically searching and asking directors of those labsen even run by the cdc labs not even run by the cdc to make sure theres nothing there that should not be. Atm users beware, the skimmer. Heres what one looks like. Its a plastic dohickey some con artist slaps on the bottom of an atm. Dont run your card through there. It will steal your private info.
