A decision today in the fourth u. S. Circuit court of appeals could send the virginia gay marriage case to the u. S. Supreme court. The ban had been struck down, but tonight reporter mola lenghi explains why the ruling does not require virginia to issue marriage licenses to gay couples right away. Reporter it was a major victory for same sex couples in virginia monday. A threejudge panel of the u. S. Court of appeals in richmond same sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. James parrish, executive director of equality virginia, has been fighting for that right for years. Its another step in the right direction. Reporter or the wrong direction according to the judge who gave the dissenting in the 21 ruling. The judge says failing to specifically define marriage between a machine and woman would allow everyone man and woman would allow everyone and anyone to marry like a father to a daughter or one person to multiple partners. If you are a loving couple and create their families in the place they call home. Reporter arguing to enforce the ban on same sex marriage, the Senior Council of Alliance Defending freedom said after the ruling every child deserves a mom and dad and the people of virginia confirmed that at the ballot box when they approved a constitutional amendment that affirmed marriage as a man woman union. Parrish argues today a majority of virginians support marriage equality, though he admits that support can often be regional. The greatest support in the state comes from northern virginia. Fairfax county, loudoun county, Prince William county, how do they fit into that . Definitely those areas have been leading in the state on the acceptance and desire for lgbt equality.
