Today Ocean City Beach patrol identified an 18year old who drowned after getting caught in strong rip currents and with Labor Day Weekend approaching and a lot of you heading off to the Eastern Shore, mola lenghi has a look at cristobals impact. So many restrictions have been in effect on parts of the Eastern Shore since yesterday and will continue into tomorrow, but they were not enough to save the life of that 18yearold from manassas. Right now waters are rough on the maryland and delaware Eastern Shores, even deadly. We had a drowning last night and that was a preventible situation where the 18yearold male from manassas, virginia, went swimming about 40 minutes after the guard went off. Reporter wusa9 meteorologist erica grow says hurricane cristobal will remain well offshore, but that doesnt mean beaches are in the clear. We will still have increased risk for rip currents through thursday night and then it will be too far out it sea where it wont affect us. With this storm youve got these winds swirling along. They stir up the ocean water underneath and never cause a circulation that happens they cause a circulation that happens there. When you get these increased waves hitting the shoreline, sometimes they dont look that dramatic on the shoreline itself, but theres more water trying to get to the shoreline and it ends up sucking back the water underneath the Ocean Surface very, very fast. Reporter Ocean City Beach patrol offers the following safety tips. Only swim when beach patrol and lifeguards are on duty, feet in the sand until lifeguards are in the stand. Always check with lifeguards about current conditions. Swim directly in front of the nearest lifeguard. If you go in the water in rough positions, beach patrol advises not going beyond knee deep water. Anything deeper is dangerous. Thats when drownings occur when a person is in water over their head they never intended to be. In knee deep water, youll have a good firm footing, so the waves arent going to pull you out. Reporter and if they do . Dont panic. The counterintuitive thing to do is the right thing to do. Reporter dont swim against the rip currents. Swim parallel to the shore. The current you want to feet will eventually lead you to safety fight will eventually lead you to safety. Another reason to be extra cautious, oc beach patrol are down to 60 of their peak summer lifeguard staffing which means the lifeguard stands are further a incorporate and they cant cover as much ground apart and they cant cover as much ground. Tonight ocean city investigators still trying to figure out what caused a boat to capsize. A 17foot boat near the oc inlet overturned, three people stranded in the water. A lifeboat crew was training nearby to rescue them. Definitely some dangerous conditions on the beaches. First alert meteorologist erica grow is here to explain more about those rip currents. Mola lenghi did a great job with that story. You can see how far away hurricane cristobal is from the shoreline. This is a distance of hundreds of miles. Cristobal is further away from d. C. Now than boston is from d. C. , but its still close enough to produce that rip current risk and we have waves still being stirred up a little bit but not that much. The center of the storm you saw in the wider view, the waves were in excess of 30 feet. This is the 10foot wave line that i have drawn and even that is a good 40, maybe even 50 miles away from the shoreline, but its still close enough to produce those sucking currents that pull you out to sea. That will diminish as the storm continues to head further away. This is what it will look like at 2 a. M. Early tomorrow morning. It is pooling away. Its already starting to make that turn out to sea and it will continue to make that turn as we head into friday. By friday its up near newfoundland.
