Tonight the cdc says its cracking down on ebola equipment in hospital protocol. Good evening. Im debra alfarone. Im derek mcginty. Now the agency says it has to issue new guidelines to protect our nations caregivers. The cdc says the original recommendations put into place in august provided a lot of flexibility for hospitals but therefore often led to confusion. These new guidelines will be a lot more specific. Texas Health Presbyterian claimed it followed cdc instruction when the gear left skin on their necks exposed. The hospital said the cdc recommended pinching and taping the necks. Just this week the cdc changed that now recommending standard body suits. The hospital also lacked a buddy system to put on or take off the gear. The agency came back saying a site manager is now required. Tonight at d. C. A little known former aide is now the nations first ebola czar. Hes a doctor of law, not medicine. What we were looking for is not an ebola expert, but rather an implementation expert. This appointment so abrupt he doesnt even have White House Security clearance yet and has no official start date. Hell brief the president every day and coordinate numerous bureaucracies that deal with the ebola crisis here and in west africa. Republicans who were calling for an ebola czar says he does not have any Public Health experience. Republican congressman tim murphy released a statement saying installing yet another political appointee who has no medical background or Infectious Disease control experience will do little to reassure americans. Tonight a Lab Supervisor who handled a specimen from deceased ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan is under quarantine aboard a Carnival Cruise ship confined to her cabin until that ship docks in galveston. The employee left the country october 12th just before the cdc updated how hospital workers had to be monitored and today belizes Prime Minister rejected secretary of state john kerrys request to have the cruise passenger disembark and fly back to the u. S. Tonight the second dallas nurse to contract ebola is in stable condition and doctors say she is weak. Amber vinson is being treated at Emery University hospital in atlanta at emory University Hospital in atlanta. Investigators are looking at if she had symptoms before flying to ohio last friday. Vinson claimed she felt funny on that trip home to plan her wedding. 12 people who may have come in contact with the nurse including her mother are being monitored for symptoms. Vinsons colleague nina pham is resting comfortably at National Institutes of Health Reportedly alert, interacting with staff and eating a bit. Dr. Anthony fauci with the nih said her condition went from good down to fair after her flight from dallas adding that pham will be at nih for the foreseeable future until he is confident she is well and clear of that virus. We fully intend to have this patient walk out of this hospital and well do everything we possibly can to make that happen. The nih Clinical Research center currently has capacity for one more ebola patient. There have been no confirmed ebola cases originating here in the d. C. Area and there have been several false alarms. Our mola lenghi is live at the nih with how ebola seems to be on everybodys mind. Reporter while nina pham is being treated for ebola here at nih behind me, ebola is impacting people in our area who dont even have it. Theres a guy in a hazmat suit standing on a bethesda Street Corner holding a sign. This is what ebola looks like. Seems you dont have to have it to suffer from it. Jeff hullberg is pushing for a temporary halt on flights to and from west africa. We as americans cant help west africa if were in crisis ourselves. Reporter he wants the u. S. To get a grip on its response to ebola. Hullberg admits hes trying to get reaction out of people. I decided im going to try to get some attention. Reporter it looks like its working while some honk and give a thumbs up in support of his message, others well, ill let this gentleman speak for himself. Youre an idiot. Hold on. If they stop the flights all theyre going to do is jump to another country. If i had just stood out here with a regular sign, im not sure anybody would stop to read it, but its hard to miss the guy in the hazmat level 4 containment suit standing on a Street Corner. Reporter on another Street Corner in arlington this is what ebola looks like, a woman showing symptoms of ebola on a public bus created a four hour ordeal. Dozens of police and Public Health workers surrounded the bus questioning the driver and 21 passengs. It was later determined she did not have the virus. From my own experience and my teams guidance and expertise we can see theres a very low risk. Reporter proper response to a deadly virus or overreaction . Maryland governor Martin Omalley stressed we cant live our lives in fear and our fear is not going to help us. Marine corps Lieutenant Colonel eric dent was on the bus with the false alarm today in arlington. He says it was overreaction, well, sort of. At first it seemed like it was an overreaction. The more i thought about it, im like hey, you know what . This is important. Lets determine if anybody had any physical contact with the passenger in question. Reporter better safe than sorry . Well, as you might imagine, the reactions to ebola whether you think theyre proper or a little over the top, theyre likely going to be with us a little while, at least until we get a grip on the virus here as well as abroad. Live at nih in bethesda, im mola lenghi for wusa9. So how did two nurses become infected with ebola . The doctor who treated those nurses and Thomas Duncan shedding light on that tonight as he sat down exclusively with reporter janet st. James in dallas. Youre crying. Theyre happy tears, arent they . Reporter the voice telling nina pham not to cry hours before the 26yearold ebola stricken nurse was to be transferred to maryland belongs to her doctor. Gary weinstein. Im just a normal guy. Reporter but the self professed ordinary guy, a father and fiance, has lived an extraordinary and some might say scary 18 days. As chief of pull pulmonol pulmonology he helped guide care of all three patients. Reporter people will be worried im sitting here with you. Whats your temperature . Ive taken it four times today. The most recent one was 97. 2 and i have been afebrile. Reporter i was not worried as we sat for an exclusive interview. By the time dr. Weinstein became involved in the hospitals ebola crisis Thomas Duncan was on dialysis, in tubated and unconscious. The nations best experts on ebola helped choose an experimental medication, but it did not work. Did you know he was dying and that it was imminent . It was very, very quick. He was critically ill and unstable and over a period of minutes he lost his pulse and was dead. Reporter many people have said Thomas Duncan was not treated as well as he should have been because he was black and uninsured. I find that remarkably insulting. Thats i dont know how better to describe that. The team here worked their tails off trying to save his life. Reporter do you think you tried everything you could . Yes. Reporter do you think he could not be saved . Yes. He was too sick. Reporter and then two days later nurse nina pham showed up with a fever and one hoped was a cold and what everyone hoped was a cold. Sunken. Felt horrible for her. Reporter what was her reaction when she heard . She was scared. She was scared. She risked her life to care for a patient and now shes afraid for her life. Reporter you couldnt even give her a hug. Certainly not. Certainly not like youd want a hug, a hug through a couple layers of plastic probably not as comforting as she needed. Reporter did you do that . You bet i did. Reporter dr. Weinstein says the entire time he was involved with nina pham, Thomas Duncan and amber vinson everyone on the team was wearing hazmat gearhead to toe. They all believed they were fully protected. So how do you think it happened . I think that these two nurses took care of a critically ill patient at a time when he was not in control of his body fluids and at a time when the recommendations from the cdc that we were following did not include the full respiratory mask. I dont know that, but thats what one person thinks. Thats me. Reporter the cdc friday night confirmed to news 8 that changes to the protective equipment required for ebola treatment are imminent because of what was learned inside texas Health Presbyterian. For now dr. Weinstein is worried about his hospitals reputation, his colleagues damaged practices and the people who voluntarily put their own lives on the lines. These nurses, therapists, they are truly heroes. This has not happened before and they selflessly gave of themselves to care for these patients and they shouldnt be shunned. Here at wusa9 we are focusing on spreading the facts, not fear through our ebola coverage. On air and online were trying to answer questions and give you reports from across the country on those straight facts. You, our viewers, took to twitter and facebook and sent in your questions. Facebook friend Shelly Woolridge asks how does ebola tiff from the flu . The answer, you differ from the flu . The answer, you can only contract ebola from someone showing symptoms of the virus. Avoiding bodily fluids of any infected person is key. Make sure to wash your hand and use Hand Sanitizer frequently. Theres no fda vaccines or ebugs to prevent or treat ola. The fight over the use of the name redskins enters a new phase in the battle. Now its heating up between a local Radio Station and a legal activist. Coming up jim osman tells us who else is picking sides. And its fun friday. Weve got the cheer squad from marshall high school. Ladies, lets do it. The owner of a d. C. Area sports Radio Station firing back at the fcc after a gw law professor challenges its license overuse of the name redskins. The professor calls that name the r word and as our jim osman tells us, native americans have joined his effort. In a 19 page filing with the fcc that gw professor presses the case the teams name is offensive to native americans and it listed that community to beef up the fcc filing and now the Radio Station is calling it meritless. They did that in a hurry and the redskins. The redskins name to john bandhalf is a slur. It constitutes fighting words, profanity, hate speech. Hes the main petitioner in a challenge to the license renewal of wwxxfm. A sports Radio Station licensed to red zebra run by redskins owner dan snyder. In the filing he argues the fcc wouldnt sanction stations using racial slurs on the air. Treat it exactly like you do the n word or the word for hispanics or asians or jews. In a response the fcc red zebra says the objections amount to nothing more than a frivolous attempt to goad the commission into banning the team name of washington d. C. s nfl franchise from the nations air waves. Red zebra argues the debate should be decided in the marketplace and not by the fcc. Such a viewpoint based regulation is subject to strict scrutiny under the First Amendment and is almost universally condemned by the supreme court. Native american groups have added to the fcc file on the issue. Some of the commissioners have made statements the redskins name may be on beingable. This is an issue already objectionable. This is an issue already before them and yet they are speaking out in my favor. It doesnt mean the thing is settled because while some commissioners may have personal opinions about the name, the issue in front of the fcc need to be decided by applying its regulations in regards to the Radio Station.
