Road here in laurel combined ten lanes of busy traffic. This is where sevenyear old, evans, was to fend for himself by a bus driver about 3 00 yesterday afternoon. He began a long odyssey trying to find home more than a mile away. His aunt is renee hub. He was outside for almost three hours trying toe find his way home. Tyshon and his mother live here. Renee described a frantic family search for him. He was found after dark walking near the James Harrison elementary school. A few blocks from home. He was screaming. He was crying. He was cold. We tried to touch his fingers. He couldnt move his fingers. They were red down to his knuckles. Montgomery countys transportation director apologized and promised an investigation. The bus driver was a substitute. Assigned to transport him to laurel in Prince Georges County where tyshon and his mother are living temporarily, under a program to assure stability. His aunt says she is satisfied the apologies and promises are sincere, but still she worries. For the rest of the week, were not comfortable with him riding the bus. It could have been a lot worse. Im thankful if wasnt, but reassurance needs to be made to different parents to know your child gets off the bus, were going to make sure they get in the home safely. Reporter and the school isnt doing on camera interviews. Siting personnel policies, but there is no circumstance and any excuse for allowing a seven yearold child to Wander Around for three hours after school outdoors. If this doesnt shock you enough, how about the story that his aunt relayed to me today, was that tyshon, while he was wandering around, asked people to use his cell phone. He knows his mothers cell phone number by heart, and tyshon told her all the people said no, they wouldnt let him use the phone. He continued to wander. Scott broom, wusa9. That might be even more heartbreaking, scott, im just glad to hear that tyshon is okay. All right, we want you to check out this scene from ox road and Robert Carter road in fairfax station, and yes, this that is a truck that is partially hanging off a cliff. The driver was trapped until rescue crews could get him out. We dont know what caused the crash. Breaking news from the district where late this afternoon, a letter carrier was assaulted while on the job. This happened on hawaii avenue near north capital street. The letter carrier was taken to the hospital. Its not clear if anything was stolen following the attack. We also have some breaking news from the university of maryland. Last weeks massive data breech is causing problems. Within the past hour, president wallace lowe announced the university is extending credit protection for victims of the cyber attack for one year to five full years. The phone number to register is on your screen. It is 8662743891. When we call add short time ago, now the recorded message said the system was over loaded and told to call back later, so you might have to give yourself some patience before you get through on that line. Again, 8662743891. The president announced formation of a task force on cyber security. That task force will complete a top to bottom investigation of computer and Information Systems on campus. It is expected to report back 90 days. More cuts and layoffs. Thats the threat made by the superintendent of the areas Largest School system. Virginia reporter, peggy fox, has more from todays rally. Theres Nothing Better that i can do with my time today than come here and support the public schools. In the middle of a snow shower, people came to rally for more funding. There is no fluff anymore. Weve been working on budgets for years and its time we must fund our school. An Outstanding School system. County executive, ed long, presented a 7 billion draft budget that includes only a 2 increase to schools. We have to have our money. Superintendent dr. Karen, 2. 5 billion budget contains 96 million in cuts, which will help pay for teacher raises, but it counts on a 5. 7 increase from the county. We have a goose that does lay golden eggs and asking, can we feed it a little more . The average salary for teachers is about 67,000 a year, but that is 6,000 less than four neighboring jurisdictions. D. C. , Montgomery County, alexandria, and arlington county. In arlington county, the average teacher salary is 75,000. Thats 9,000 more than here in fairfax. We need to be at the top. We have some of the finest schools in the country. In order to keep them strong, we have to keep our best teachers in our classrooms. More money is needed in part because the county keeps growing. You have four more children, i bet the Grocery Store budget goes up and you cant keep flat lining the transfer of money into the School System. While most, if not all supervisors support teacher pay raises, how they get them is another thing. They over funded their salary line. Its going to be a balancing act, trying to make sure we are funding all the needs in Fairfax County. While soup visors are increasing the tax rate, the supervisor is firm with a warning. Im fearful of what might additional cuts we have to make. Wusa9. The draft budget does not raise property tax rates, but because of higher assessments, the average property tax bill would increase by about 330. We have a followup now to a mom struck and killed by a dump truck yesterday while tending to her child in her mini van in front of an arlington elementary school. One day later, neighbors are reaching out and a viewer wrote to us saying the street in front of nodding ham elementary is unsafe and she has asked the county to act. Deborah joins us now live from little falls road to pick up the story from there. Deb. Lesli, after that viewer, ellen jones emailed us saying this whole area is really unsafe. We reached out to the Civic Association in the area. We didnt hear back. We reached out to the county. I want to show you one thing that ellen had mentioned. Take a look at our crew car. You can see how close the parked car is. But i do want to be clear. Police are investigating. At this point, we have a lot of Unanswered Questions and a lot of facts we dont know. We came here to find some out. Those kids just adored her. They loved her. So, whenever she was gone, they would just, they would be very sad. So, thats why this breaks my heart for them. What is clear here in a situation full of gray is that 39yearold, mom of three, Jennifer Lawson left a lasting impression on those who knew her. Including fellow mosa. It was 11 30 a. M. Monday when tragedy struck on little falls road right in front of noddingham elementary. A dump struck striking lawson as she was leaning into the car with the child. Police are investigating. We dont know if the truck was speeding. We dont know if lawson was in the driving lane or the dump truck. We do know a life was lost. And answers may do little to dry those tears. I would just ask that we all take a moment of silence for miss lawson. As the investigation continues, lawsons death was felt at arlington countys board meeting. You just cant believe Something Like that happened and you think immediately about how it could have happened to anyone. And flowers in front of the school serve as a reminder of how precious life is. You hug them a lot tighter and youre just thankful for what you have at the moment and know that in just a matter of seconds, everything can change. Now we came out here to get some answers. That viewer, ellen jones, who e mailed us say people routinely speed. We didnt see that was happening. So, is speeding an issue here . Are these lanes too narrow . Certainly questions we need answers to. Were waiting for the county to get back to us on what they plan to do, if anything. Right now, were live in arlington, wusa9. Thank you. Schools across the country may see soon the end of those ads for junk food and soda. First lady, Michelle Obama and the agriculture secretary aimed out a new proposal. As Craig Boswell explains, not everybody thinks this is money well spent. School cafeteria menus are already changing and soon, the attention grabbing snack marketing on campus could be changing, too. Our classrooms should be Healthy Places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food. First lady, Michelle Obama and agriculture secretary are proposing a ban on ads for junk food and sodas. Its part of the first ladys, lets move initiative. If you cant sell it, not market it. The secretary admits its big business. Companies spent almost 150 million a year on marketing in schools. The changes would remove popular drink ads from school score boards and vending machines. Their proposal follows usda limitations, marketing in terms of how you tell the child they should eat, our vending maches have 100 fruit juice, our chips are whole grain.
