This grand jury has been asked to serve in a more investigative capacity where they are going to hear all the evidence, evidence for prosecution but also evidence for defense. Student leaders gathered today to speak about rape on campus and what needs to be done to stop it. Peggy fox joins us live near the Fraternity House where the alleged gang rape happened. Reporter thats right. All activities at fraternities and sororities are suspended until january 9th. Student leaders gathered today saying that was a good decision. Now what happened. This alleged rape two years ago and the tepid response has put a new spotlight ow va and rape. Anger erupted into weekend protests at uva after a Rolling Stone Magazine Article described a students account of being gang raped in the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity House. Theres nothing that we can do more than raise awareness. Reporter faculty members also protested. What do you want the university to do . Because this is the university respecting the honor system and we are not allowing students to cheat or to copy and we are allowing that these things happen in the fraternities is totally shocking. Reporter the article depicted the victims frustration at trying to make her alleged attackers accountable. It pointed out that while many uva students had been expelled for honor code violations, none had been expelled for Sexual Assault. Rebecca wainwright with the Sexual Assault Resource Agency says victims often dont want to go through with prosecution. I dont know that were going to know exactly what the survivor was or wasnt told. For us we work very hard from how can we best help the survivor and a lot of survivors do not want to go forward. They do not want to talk to the police. They dont feel thats going to be a helpful process. Reporter requests to the uva administration to speak to president Teresa Sullivan went unanswered. We are definitely disappointed in the administrations handling of this thus far, but we see this as an opportunity for the administration to step up and create a policy that creates the strongest support system possible for survivors. Reporter today student leaders gathered together to stand together for change. This is our problem to solve. That means that every single one of us, all of us have a role to play in finding that solution. Reporter president Teresa Sullivan did ask the Charlottesville Police department to investigate this alleged gang rape which it is doing. She also issued a statement saying she was appalled at the details of the incident and said they are reexamining their responsibility to the community. Tomorrow the board of visitors is holding an emergency meeting to discuss this issue and look at its policies and procedures. Peggy fox, wusa9. Its not been a pleasant experience for him, but ive been told christopher barrys name is Marion Christopher barry. You can imagine what that will mean to people who see it on the ballot and he may be having some second thoughts about running to replace his father. I understand theres some complications with him lying in state. The complication is were talking immediately after thanksgiving and council has an important legislation session on tuesday because they have important bills to get out and enacted by the end of the year.
