WUSA Wusa 9 News At 5pm June 16, 2016
And we have been covering this. Mill take cover. Dalton. Take cover. This is a serious storm and doppler indicated tornado . Yes. Doppler indicated tornado. It is algorithm and it triggers a warning. Does it mean one . Not yet but take it seriously. The warnings come out and its our job to pass it along. Tornado warning to 5 45 for fredericksburg and pennsylvania and stafford and culpepper. Lets do some scans and see what we are up against and see how strong the storm is. There is a river road there just to the west of fredericksburg. Looks pretty serious right there and its route across 95 and headed into, what is that highland homes. Mccarthys corner and falmoth and preserve lane and rocky run road. Take cover immediately. Again a basement or an interior room if you can. We have the possibility of a tornado and half size coin hail. You want to stay away from debris. We got a tornado possible tornado. 89 miles northwest of fredericksburg. 9 miles northwest of river road. That is the possibility of a tornado right around river road and around chancellor and old plank road. Please take cover. We have a pick of a funnel cloud. I81 and 16. What time was that this is the one near martinsburg that prompted the
Tornado Warning
earlier to the northwest. You can see why. Thats a good pick and send us your pictures. Dont do anything crazy. Be safe but send us the pictures but ground truth is what it is about. We have a good idea of what is going on. It is great to see the radar was right it was two inches in diameter and tracked the tornado. Send us pictures at tenacious doppler or facebook and you are keeping an eye on that as well, the intern. Lets go back to this storm now down into fredericksburg. Stafford and culpepper and stafford. The biggest threat on river road. Theres the hail size hail over 2. 2 and
Tornado Warning
until 5 45. So this storm you better take seriously as well. Basement, interior room and get your car in the carport and out of the hail. The hail will move. It will move right down this it will move down the corridor. There is no doubt about it. It is going to move right this hail will probably move right throughout city of fredericksburg. 5 18. Wow, where did that come from . We got another good picture around martinsburg, west virginia. Can you double this up here . I dont think we can do that. You can kind of see it. It is a heck of a picture. The one around martinsburg that prompted the warning. The one that state troopers said we got the ground on route 9 between
Berkeley Springs
and martinsburg and by golly we have it. Lets put the reared back on and take that off. Let me zoom back out. Tornado warning for the city of fredericksburg and stafford and culpepper until 5 45. And i will do a fan one more time and if you come up in this fan, take cover, you should have taken already in fredericksburg and olive and dalton and
Bowling Green
around 5 40. Take cover. The storm will move to the southeast at 35
Miles Per Hour
. What do we have now . Howard bernstein like towards leesburg. Hb, what do you got . Reporter we are running into some of that heavy rain. We have been watching the storm, impressive and we are intohe with us here. Traffic moving at speed and maybe we are about 5 miles or so with that east of leesburg moving westbound. We got that one cell that is approaching and there is other ones as well behind that. These are
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
s until 5 30 in this part of the world. No
Tornado Warning
s thankfully but you show that picture a few moments from that part inaudible . Howard is driving into the storm, the heavy rain around leesburg and from 15 so that is where howie is going with
Storm Tracker
9. It will move down route 7 so anybody going home right now, you know, headed for great falls, gaithersburg, you are going to get rain here in a half hour. This is a heavy storm but we have to concentrate on storm to the south and this the
Tornado Warning
. Nothing new came out, right . So now they got 80
Miles Per Hour
winds possible. This is up in
Jefferson County
. This is this is this one. Okay. Until 515. Yeah. Okay. So this one they have the potential. This is
Jefferson County
and
Washington County
and possible wind at 80
Miles Per Hour
. This one here and we put our ducks in a row. We have this guy here. That warning and we have this guy to the south east and thats that warning. And we will move the radar south and we are going to show you the other
Tornado Warning
down to the south and fredericksburg. With the
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
to the north of it, up near stafford and thats going until 5 30 and the
Tornado Warning
until 5 45. Lets move this back down here and see what this shows, in terms of velocity and rotation. There is a little bit there. Dont see anything crazy. 26
Miles Per Hour
. And so the red and the green are way in towards the radar site and again when you see a lot of big values for both and seeing rotation and possibility of a tornado. It looks to me just by this and i want to zoom in more here, yeah, i mean if i had to pick a spot, we said this earlier around river road, and just to the north of old plank road. Thats the best of any rotation and strong winds. The whole storm will have a pretty big area of winds and obviously some damage will happen with the straight winds. Lets see if we got the storm reports. Okay. The south and this is the west of culpepper and lets see, this has got numerous trees and wires around stanley and that came in at 3 22 and it doesnt mean it was a tornadic event but strong winds whether it be through strong thunderstorm warnings or tornadoes, winds are still 67, 70
Miles Per Hour
. Big enough to produce tree wires down and we have other severe reports, storm reports up to the north and we showed you this earlier around charlestown and this is actually a new one. Hillside an inch at 4 30, okay . And now we got one to the northwest of leesburg around round hill and that had an
Inch Diameter
hail at 4 51. This is great. If we go and west, a little up here, this is where the first storms appeared, burgundy springs and we got trees down off of route 9 and golf ball size the hail and reports of hail 1. 9 inches in diameter. Thats impressive for this part of the world. Across the border, trees down on barns road and silver mile and engle smith across the border from hancock, pennsylvania. That originated in
Fulton County
and has held together well. Lets go to the radar and well track some of the storms. Ill go back to the south this is where the severe storms are. The thunderstorm warnings. Fredericksburg you would have already taken cover. Taking the hail out now. A pretty heavy storm. We will loop it and this is actually making some not always, the ones to the north did not but instead of going this way it may go this way just a little bit to the right. We will put it to route 2 and show you towards
Bowling Green
at 5 42 and dalton and dalton at 5 0029. You got to take cover. If anybody is trying to go to home from dc, tell them to take it easy right now. This is a serious situation southbound. This storm is causing problems to the south of us. Howie is back in the leaseburg area. Okay. Lets see what the video looks like. There it is. It is probably on route 7 and once you get past sterling on route 7 it is heavy stuff. And yeah, top, we got out of the heavy stuff and i just want to give you another picture if i can. Let me see if i can give you the route camera and overview and that storm, what we are seeing of it, you can see good structure so it may be tough but some of the clouds and thats the storms north of leesburg to montgomery county. We have been following that. Obviously everything is wet but we got other storms and see how dark it is to the north and northeast from and just some light rain now again here in leesburg as the heavy stuff is to the north and the heavy cells and i know you have been tracking the severe storms to the rth and moving towards washington and fredericks and harpers ferry, i guess, we are looking at that storm. Pretty close. We may see that one pass. But several storms and i know when that second line that is producing that
Severe Weather
through pittsburgh and morgantown west virginia, we have to worry about that for later this evening. We are putting these on the lines, these pictures on the web site, right . We got a great pick from martinsburg and a funnel town i agree. Some of those are confirmations that the tornado was down there at one time. You have not seen any hail, howard . No, just heavy downpours. Nothing hail. We were coming from the west side. The storms were 30 or 60 minutes ago and no hail with this yet. Weaving thankfully and leesburg cell north of winchester and harpers ferry. And a lot of this stuff is behind us and we are not out of the woods yet and i think thats something to watch and we will see you shortly. I go ahead. We got
Tornado Warning
in effect for fredericksburg 5 45. And
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
north of that that includes culpepper and king george and stafford. This will bring be, these are the storms ahead of the main line a big line of storms entering the panhandle of marion county. The watch until ten and i feel the
Severe Threat
will continue until 11 or midnight especially for you folks in
Prince George
county. You are always the last to get hit and the last to clear to the south and east us. We will zoom in. One storm in martinsburg and no warning and
Berkeley Springs
, you have had enough problems. Storm number two, no warni that and leesburg where howard was rolling through. Frederickburg and crossing over 95. Lightning although this is not the signature storms. These storms in red until 5 45. Port royal, 301 heading my way at 45
Miles Per Hour
. The warning until 5 45. Good chance for wind out towards chancellor and the best chance for winds and the tornado close to bellevue and straddling route one and headed to the south and east. This storm is about to just get out of the box and chances of
Warnings Issued
south. Heavy rain and hail around ro i think you all got hammered with big time winds and hail and its still over you right now and fredericksburg. Talking rainfall rates over two inches per hour. In terms of the radar off to the northwest. Not as much sheer and thats good and storms to the northwest so not yet and we will widen it up. Leesburg and frederick and haggerstown and martinsburg and reports to the west of culpepper and pretty soon we will get reports around fredericksburg of hail and potentially some damaging wind. We talk about this all of the time under
Tornado Warning
s and more severe storms. Anytime you want to go to a basement or interior room. They can proceed 80
Miles Per Hour
and severe thunderstorms can. Anytime we are talking about warnings go to the basement and interior and stay away interest windows and protect yourself from flying debris because that is the key. Every day objects. Not harmful and 80
Miles Per Hour
. They are deadly projectiles and thats the problem. Again. Interior room or basement, i know a lot of you dont have them and you can be just as safe and away from windows and flying debris. We are looking at a severe thunderstorm watch for the area and i think that may be extended until 10 00. I will widen do another storm track. Not perfect but big storms where they are headed. If i take off the radar and the lightning. You can see the severe thunderstorm watch down to the south. Not a huge surprise, they have extended the warning 5 45. We are going to loop this, right around chancellor and fredericksburg and again, this is now a new
Tornado Warning
extended. Not a huge surprise but not good news this is and goes until 5 45. This is going to move off to the south and east, please take cover. And please be advised. Warning, its action, watch and possible and talking about warning in yellow here will encompass the area. Moving off to the south and east and will kind of put a fan on this guy too. And i think it will move to the south of port royal and
Bowling Green
at 5 45. Gulf ball size the hail and about 15 te movement and to the southeast at 25
Miles Per Hour
. And this is our main event in terms of danger and
Tornado Warning
for sponsavania. We will scan more and the good news is and i think this is true. Nothing on the leesburg storm or the brunswick storm or nothing on this storm. This looks like a bad storm between martinsburg and winchester. You have had your share of rough weather already. Moving southeast. A heavy storm. Maybe some hail headed towards percyville. Lets take this storm as it moves to the southeast. Even though warning this is a heavy storm and i would prepare percyville and hopefully you have prepared with weather around you and also mountainville headed towards sterling. This is percyville at 5 49 and not a warning but these are all heavy storms and anytime you have a heavy storm with lightning and we are concerned about flooding. We mentioned this at 11 00. Flooding is a big threat especially west of town tonight with extreme heavy downpours and flash flooding occurs very quickly and comes up quickly and goes away very quickly and thats why we call it flash flooding as well. We got hail golf sized possible. They have dropped the warning to the south of us. If they would make it bigger print it would i see this warning. 5 18. I seat warning until 5 45. Am i reading this . Whats that . What are they saying. Looking at the information here. We have something from our
Weather Service
that is canceled and weakened which is good news and we have the warning around it that will not change. For some reason. They are just basically they are canceling the warning. Is about here . And the
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
is in effect and we can disregard the warning. I am concerned. Well, you know what, even if it were canceled. I want people to take coverage. We have a severe thunderstorm around it. We will track it for you and moving it at 25 or 30
Miles Per Hour
. We will get that. Let me make sure that we got this squared away. Can we confirm. Until it disappears. I want people to take baylor town. At about 5 45. And even though it may not be a tornado it may be a thunderstorm warning and thats a dangerous storm as well. I think it is still in effect. Still there until 5 45. Sometimes it is easier if i can take the radar off. There is the red area. Okay. Thats the
Tornado Warning
in chanceler until 5 45. The larger area for chancellor and i think we will see this expanded. The storm is not weakening that much. What do we have . Not a surprise here. The storm is 10 minutes ago. New warning for burke, frederick and that is
Frederick County
virginia and
Jefferson County
until 6 15 and that looks like a heavy storm right now. Good lightning. So we have a possibility of 60
Miles Per Hour
winds and quartersized hail and not to be taken lightly even though there is a
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
. Northeast clark and east central frederick and southern
Jefferson County
and
South Central
berkeley until 6 15. Nine miles north of winchester moving south at about 20. And this is going to cause some problems. Damaging wind, it doesnt have pretty strong winds with wires down up around martinsville or earlier today. And thats the latest warning up towards charlestown until 6 15 and we still got a warning on this folks. This is still
Tornado Warning
. I dont see anything. I dont know why they pulled it out but if it is not on the chat. Well, we n caleave the
Tornado Warning
s for a second if we go to oakmont and pittsburgh and i will tell you what. Here is the deal. So lets go to pittsburgh and morgantown, this has to go through us. All of and that is why
Severe Weather
might continue. Once it goes through around 2, 3 and 4, it will be fine. They may have to play 36 holes or 30 holes but it will be fine after today. A
Storm Tracker
on this line. Lets do this here to nine. So if you are inside the beltway, you still have time to do some thing like lower your umbrellas and that sort of thing. Lets expanded the thunderstorm warning and they have the tiny
Tornado Warning
right there. In between fredericksburg and sponsvania. A new warning until 6 15. We have got movement at about 30. Winds up to 60. Half dollar size the hail. It can damage your roof and siding and knock down some trees and bring out power lines and moving again off to the southeast or south at about 30
Miles Per Hour
headed towards cedar and wright corner and billsborro. Now it is warnings. We have to worry about the thunderstorm warnings. It is a monster storm. Bellevue and new post. Corbin and dalton and baylor town. You will notice moving more south. Look at how it turned. We will track it like. Headed towards page at 5 42 and claiborne. You have about three minutes to get away from windows. Still a dangerous storm even though it is
Tornado Warning<\/a> earlier to the northwest. You can see why. Thats a good pick and send us your pictures. Dont do anything crazy. Be safe but send us the pictures but ground truth is what it is about. We have a good idea of what is going on.
