County. So well track that. Ahead of that with the thicker clouds, its a little warmer. Look at the low 60s, petersburg, cumberland, hagerstown. 65 in martinsburg right now while locally were in the upper 40 toz 50s in many spots. So youll need a light jacket, but better chances of rain thursday night. Back to you. The day after election day and the nation is reacting to changes in the political world. The republicans have won control of the house and senate in the new 114th congress. And when every vote is counted, the grand old party could end up with the biggest House Majority since harry truman was president 60 years ago. Here in our region we witnessed what may be one of the biggest upsets of all, Anthony Brown, the democrat in maryland lost the governors race to republican larry hogan. Scott broom was there. [ chanting ] this is the largest mandate for change in maryland in [ cheers and applause ] wait. Wait. In 63 years. [ cheers and applause ] i think some of them are reacting negatively to the negative campaign that is were run by the other guys and our message worked. People want to see a change, they want lower taxes and get our economy back on track. Reporter al redburn is a former maryland insurance commissioner taxes, Government Spending and job growth, he was very consistent. Reporter Boyd Rutherford is now the Lieutenant Governor. I have a lot of respect for Lieutenant Governor brown, but i just dont think that he generated a lot of excitement and there was a concern about it, it just was a continuation of the last eight years. Tomorrow the people of maryland finally take maryland back. [ cheers and applause ] reporter with governor elect larry hogan in annapolis, scott broom, wusa 9. Reporter democrats may outnumber republicans 21 in maryland, but Anthony Brown clearly failed to get his supporters of off the couch and into the voting booth. [ cheers ] reporter for just the second time in 40 years, a democrat has failed to win the maryland governors race. Some democrats say Anthony Brown simply never clearly defined himself to voters in the democratic strongholds in prince georges and baltimore city. He may have said he would fight for working families ahe middle class, but those messages never got through. The things that we fought for on this campaign will not be ignored. We will continue to stand up and speak out for working families across this state as we strengthen the middle class and create more jobs and opportunities for more marylanders. [ cheers ] reporter plenty of second guessing here. How could an iraq vet, a harvard law grad, an African American from Prince Georges County lose so badly . Voters here in maryland clearly want a change. In college park, bruce lashan, wusa 9. Reporter this is Bruce Johnson inside the historic Howard Theater just off the U Street Corridor and a Victory Party for mayorelect Muriel Bowser, ended about midnight tonight. You probably have already seen the victory speech, but you havent seen the embrace that she gave to her parents, her mother, her father, a Longtime Community activist and a political activist. It was very touching and you should have seen the interview she gave us, her first 101 interview after declaring victory here. Personally what does this mean to you . It means everything. It means everything. I have a great responsibility and im just humbled by the trust that the residents of the district of colombia put in me. We have a big win, we have a mandate to get the things done that we need to get done. Reporter mayorelect Muriel Bowser sent this crowd home this morning saying shes ready to go to work. She says she hopes they are ready too. This is Bruce Johnson reporting from the historic howard anthony, wusa 9. Another race democrats didnt think they had to worry about was mark warners re elecon bid in virginia. Still very, very close. Nick giovanni is in the Election Center with just how close. Mike. Reporter yeah, mike, polls have now been closed for 11 hours and this one is still too close to call, at least thats how Ed Gillespies camp sees it. He has yet to concede anything to incumbent democrat mark warner who many thought would coast to victory lane in this senate race. Thats not how its shaking out this morning. According to the aps latest numbers, the former governor, well, his lead is now down to about 12,000 votes over challenger ed gillespie with all but a fraction of precincts reporting. Thats a difference of about. 55 , well within the range of a recount. In virginia a candidate can call for one if the margin of victory is less than 1 . Late last night while warner was giving a victory speech, gillespie told a room full of his supporters hell accept the final outcome of whatever it ends up being, but he says it owes to the voters of virginia that make it final. Towards the end, the county elections board, theyre actually going to be around the commonwealth, theyre going to be spending the morning, double checking their results to help state officials certify this election. Mike, andrea. Thank you. Coming up in a few minutes whats behind the overwhelming vote for the gop. Well show what the exit polls show and talk to political analyst rick kelsey about what this means for one of the two final years of obamas presidency. As we head to break, heres a look at some other things voters decided last night. Rchlt welcome back. 6 09 on this wednesday morning. A little bit of light out there, sunrise still about a half an hour from now and you see the mostly cloudy skies. If we see any sun, expecting it to be early. Rook for mostly cloudy to a cloudy day. Some late showers west, and then well see highs well up into the 60s. Looks like a pretty good bet for rain tonight into thursday, so tomorrow a yellow alert day. More on that and your weekend forecast coming up in about 6 15. Right now beverly farmer, shes got the latest time saver traffic. Reporter howard, wednesday ride startd a couple of issues. We start on 66 eastbound delays in manassas, take you most of the way to centreville. The crash near 29 centreville was moved over to the Left Shoulder. Still a focal point for delays. Then heavier than usual toward the metro, east of nutley street, an accident has moved on. Thats the good news. Still slowdowns coming into the beltway towards falls church. Northeast of washington, mount olivet road remains closed essentially between new york avenue and West Virginia avenue near 9th street northeast, thats due to the structure fire activity. Andrea, mike, back to you. Thanks, beverly. Nearly 2 3 of americans who vote in the Midterm Election say the country is on the wrong track. In a National Exit poll, voters in red and blue states gave low marks to how lawmakers and the president are doing their jobs. Just one in five who did show up to vote say they approve of the job congress is doing. 78 of those who voted yesterday say they disapprove of the work or lack of work from capitol hill. Congress hasnt really been able to do much and people are frustrated i think of the gridlock weve seen out of washington. President obama fare only slightly better in exit poll with 44 of an approval rating. More than half of the republicans surveyed said he was a factor in their vote. Voters ranked the economy as the most important issue, followed by healthcare, illegal immigration and foreign policy. Monday night during his monologue, David Letterman joked that gas is finally under 3, unemployment is under 6 , the economy is growing at a rate of 3. 5 and the stock market is breaking records everyday. No wonder president obama is so unpopular. So if the economy was a key concern for most voters, and things are Getting Better economically, why was this election a referendum on the overall unpopularity of the president and, of course, they call it the donothing congress, probably the most Inactive Congress maybe in u. S. History. Were joined again by richard kelsey, assistant dean at George Mason University school of law. Professor, tell us, why did the voters go against this wonderful outcome of the Obama Administration . Because the voters have not yet felt this type of recovery that the government keeps telling them theyre having. You know, the government has a change way has a strange way of counting the unemployed. If youve been unemployed long enough, they stop counting you as unemployed. At some point if we were all unemployed, the way we count, we had adget down to an Unemployment Rate of zero. Americans arent feeling it in their pocketbook, they arent feeling secure in any way, shape or form about their job and it just hasnt translated. So the numbers look good on paper, but as we know, those numbers can tell a story that people dont feel in reality and i think that was reflected in the turnout. So a trickledown. Right. You see the stock market soaring, another new high just this week, but it doesnt necessarily people think, like, i might not lose my job because the economy is so solid, theyre not feeling it. Big difference between wall street and main street. You know, if you look at real wage growth over the last decade, it doesnt exist. Weve got people working more and more parttime jobs, thats a reality. People are not feeling secure in their position, thats a reality and at the end of the day, theyre very nervous. I mean, the one thing the exit polls show is the economy was the overwhelming concern. How could it be the overwhelming concern if its really improving . And i think most americans dont feel that improvement. We had an interesting statement from a financial analyst on cbs, when you have a divided government like this, both houses controlled by the Republican Party and a democratic president , wall streets numbers are up 21 . Yeah, you know, there are some funny numbers if you look historically at what happens. The truth of the matter is theres a lot of reasons, without getting deep into my financial knowledge which is somewhat limit, but at the end of the day, wall street tends to go up high when theres no where else to put your money. You cant put it in bonds and you dont put it in real estate, so people are looking for profits on wall street and thats one of the reasons weve seen this runup over time. So looking forward, the ability to get something done is it in better shape before election day or worse shape because that was the discontent in the donothing congress and american voters. Look, you guys arent getting anything done, where do we go from here . Look, they have to get something done. The republicans have to get something done because they have to prove that they can govern. So theyre going to have to look for opportunities to compromise. The president does not want to go out with two years essentially sitting on the sidelines as the president of the united states, so hes going to finally look for opportunities to compromise with the republicans, but make no mistake about it, theres going some highstake politics games being played between the two and look for the republicans to put some very unpalatable things on the desk of the president as well that hes going to veto. And if you read some of the political blogs they say Mitch Mcconnell because hes getting up in age, hes getting more and more concerned about his legacy, so maybe he wont be this is a oneterm president , hell say, look, if hes going to be the majority leader or more of a strident conservative. What do you think . Well, Mitch Mcconnell has a bunch of folks sitting over his shoulder on a constant basis trying to move him to the right. Now, i know he likes to claim sometimes hes on the right and there are people that run against him that say hes on the right, but the conservative wing of the party does not believe hes on the right, so its going to be interesting to see, does he go their way or does he become part of this gang of eight and dos he look for opportunities to make comprehensive Immigration Reform or other types of policies we hear people talk about . That story will be told over the next few months and its going to be interesting to see which way he decides to go. And its going to make an impact on what gets done. Our conversation is not over with richard. Youre coming back in the next half hour. Well be right back. 6 17 on this wednesday morning. Whats the temperature of the forecast . We know what the temperature of the electorate is. Moderate. Weve got temps in the 60s to the 40s. Kind of an electoral range in many cases as well. Today a winner, not a landslide, but a solid victory for mother nature. Tomorrow will be a solid loss. I think a lot of folks will not be happy with this one as well. Lets see whats happening today because theres still plenty of clouds out there, a few breaks. Now, if we see some sun, i think itll be early, but generally a cloudy day with a threat for some showers west later this afternoon and that shower threat will approach d. C. After dark tonight, highs in the mid, possibility upper 60s. Were looking at near 70, fredricksburg, tappahannock, we could see some 70s today. Temperatures warmer in martins, 11 warmer in gaithersburg, seven warmer at joint base andrews. So its milder here thanks to the clouds that are around. In some cases were in the 60s. 65 in martinsburg right now. Hagerstown one of our warm spots at 64 while manassas has dip into the mid40s and upper 40 toz around 50 and cambridge at 49. So, again, were looking at those breaks in the clouds before the sunrise, still about 20 minutes away or so with a current temperature in washington of 57 and with light winds and cloudy skies, maybe just a light jacket if you need one at all right now. A lot of rain. Look at all this rain in texas. This has been coming off the pacific, gathering here, an then stenning up across a front. So theyve had some very good beneficial rains down into mexico as well. This extends all the way into parts of new england. Well, behind this front its dropping into the 40s, but weve got our 50s and 60s. And futurecast shows, yeah, one or two of those sprinkles might get toward Shenandoah Valley, Northern Maryland here this morning and into the afternoon. But, really, the bulk of the showers, even at 4 00 are still Shenandoah Valley west, approaching western maryland and moving off to the northeast. So by 7 30, blue ridge west, might see a sprinkle or two in the metro. Better chances 8 00, 9 00, 10 00 toward midnight, then well see rain, north of d. C. , north of i66, north of baltimore and then overnight showers around, some will be moderate to heavy by thursday morning. So imagine your commute tomorrow at 6 00 a. M. Imagine telecommuting if you can. This will leave pretty quickly, but even though well see some sunny breaks, a mostly cloudy thursday with other showers for the afternoon and evening hours until this whole system clears us and that will happen by friday morning. And behind it temperatures will only hold i think in the low to mid50s for friday, saturday and sunday. So 67 today, still mild, 55 tonight, 50 the cool spots with those showers developing. Tomorrow numerous showers especially in the morning, 65. Cooler tomorrow night, down to 46. A slim chance well see a shower friday, but right now partly cloudy, blustery, 54. The weekend looks dry, mainly sunny, chilly for the heart walk saturday morning. Were talking closer to 40, but should be a decent day at 54 and redskins and ravens at home, still a decent home, cool and 54. Beverly farmer, were approaching 6 21, so we have that volume issue now. Reporter the volume issue and a couple of wrecks on 66. Sky 9 has found the accident on eastbound 66 in centreville right near the 29 interchange. Initially the vehicle was in the initially the vehicles in the roadway did manage to move off to the Left Shoulder with police, but slowing things down with those flashing lights on the shoulder. The eastbound delays beginning in manassas, we can show you those in our traffic land cameras, trying to make your way east into centreville, the new focal point, that crash on the Left Shoulder. After that more sluggish fair oaks and into vienna, but the crash east of nutley street has moved on. Thats the good news for you there. Falls church a little volume at this hour and in the next couple of miments the h. O. V. Will kick in inside the beltway there. Check out the northbound corridor, 95, inbound delays towards quantico, heading west past williams parkway, springfield, just the volume northbound i95, travelers there. Northeast washington, you still got the closure of mount olivet road, its shut down between nine a and corcocan streets northeast, basically new york and West Virginia avenue with a structure fire. Lanes remain open on new york. Your outer loop slowdowns forming west of 95 in New Hampshire avenue and taking you west most of the way to Georgia Avenue in silver spring. Well be right back with more election results. More news, weather and traffic right after this. Good wednesday morning. We gdid he help pick it out . Er. No, hes a cat. How did i get so big .
