Indiana governor mike pence is calling it a perception problem. Today lawmakers in both arkansas and indiana are working to fix religious freedom bills. Mike is here with a look at the new stance from the two governors. Reporter good morning guys. As we learned perception is reality. These laws were originally designed to allow people to conduct business based on the religious beliefs but critics say they deny service to gays and lesbians. Indiana lawmakers say they are close to an agreement on new legislation that will clarify the states controversial religious freedom law. Amid backlash and protest they worked into the night wednesday. The question is removing whats been raised of discrimination and denial of service, facilities some other things so thats what we are focusing on. They are expected to vote today on adding new language that would amend the law to prevent businesses from explicitly using it to discriminate against gays and lesbians. The current version of the bill has its share of supporters. The analog of what indiana just passed, that was passed in 1993 thank you congress and Democrat Bill clinton signed it into law. A similar religious freedom is now on the desk of arkansas governor hutchinson. Hes refusing to sign it though until it is more in line with the federal law. In state laws the language is often broader and there are different interpretations. My son seth signed the petition asking, dad, the governor to veto this bill, and he gave me permission to make that reference. Hutchinson faced criticism over the state law from businesses including walmart. He has just five days to take action until the bill becomes law without his signature. Now the ncaa final four is in indianapolis this weekend and it is raising pressure for even more resolve to get this, use settled before the tip off of the first game. Andrea, nick . Federal prosecutors say the democrat used the power of his seat to benefit his friends personal and financial interest and returns. Menendez is confident he will be cleared. Im outraged that prosecutors at the Justice Department were tricked into starting this investigation three years ago with false allegations by those who have a political motive to silence but i will not be silenced. Now the 14 count indictment says the gifts included flights on private and commercial jets, access toville as and resorts in the caribbean, hotels, expensive meals, golf outings and hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions. Menendez is the first sitting u. S. Senator to face indictment in seven years. This afternoon American University students are planning to rally against Sexual Assault on campus. They are demanding mandatory Sexual Assault prevention education for all of their fellow classmates. Delia is live near the American University campus for the preview of that rally. Good morning. Reporter the students will have that rally at 1 00 this afternoon and they plan to deliver a petition to the president calling for the mandatory sex assault courses. And they say they already have 500 signature on their petition and in fact this will not be the first time this particular group of students has taken this type of action on campus. In fact a year ago this month, they took to the campus in reaction to some leaked emails from banned fraternity epsilon talking about rape and members joking about rape drugs. The school they say has done little to address Sexual Assault on campus including a case that members point to back in december when a female student says she was raped by someone she knew inside a dorm room. It was shocking but i know that this campus isnt immune to Sexual Assault. It surprised me and was unfortunate to hear it was someone that she knew. We reached out to American University and administrators tell us they have tried to stay on top of this issue of Sexual Assault and violence on campus, trying to educate the student body by holding a number of for ups and meetings, but theyve invited this group, the protesters, theyve invited them to these meetings and they have refused to come. Coming up at 6 30 how more on the federal investigation now under way that involves American University. Back to you. All right, delia, thank you. In an attempt to address Sexual Assault on its campus the university of virginia now unveiled new guidelines on how students and the school should handle these types of cases. It was sparked by a complaint from a student who says the college lost crucial evidence in her 2011 assault. Complaints will now be examined by the universitys full time investigator and students will be allowed to have an advisor of their choice at disciplinary hearings. Uva says it expects revisions to the policy to be made in the coming months. His uconn lady huskies are just days away from appearing in another final four. Just days before the uconn lady huskies take the floor against the maryland lady tarapins the internet is responding to comments uconn coach made about the state of the mens game. Thats right. Our very own uconn alum himself mike hydeck knows for himself. What do you have to say . Hes not scared and one of the thing about this is hes the most Successful College basketball coaches of all types so when hes interviewed and makes a kent like this it has weight. He calls the mens game a joke and thinks it needs to be retrofitted dramatically and social media is on fire about this defending the mens game. Lets take a lock at twitter. He needs to shut his mouth. You do not coach at the highest level of basketball. Put your big boy pants on and coach men. Genox really wants to call the mens game a joke to watch. Has anyone watched a women game this year . People are fired up about this. Yes, its entertaining to watch a 6foot 10 woman who cant touch the rim. Gene genox, nothing says compelling basketball game like a sweet 16 game won by 51 points, womens hoop rock. Why does usa today want to know what geno thinks of basketball at all . Uconn Womens Basketball should tell him to stay there and i wont go with the next one there. Really would love to see geno coach a mens team. Think he would crush it . Now he does have some supporters guy. Among them, all other sports have done things to improve scoring. Scoring is down in the mens game. A lot more defense some people say but ratings are down too. The regular season not nearly as popular as the ncaa tournament so he does have supporters but by and large the internet is on fire with people who disagree with geno. Fighting words on both side sounds like. Come on. The lady bring it on. They know how to do it. Much respect. Thank you, mike. Its 6 15. We continue to follow breaking news out of kenya where an had attack on a university killed at let two people. And four year of a historic drout leaves californias governor to issue an emergency order. Were welcome back to wusa 9 at if a. M. Im mike hydeck in the news room. Here is things were working on at 6 18. Were still following breaking news out of kenya. The death toll from a shooting at a university there is at least 60 people have been injured. Police say gunman started shooting in campus dorps. This is the latest in a string of attacks in kenyas northern and eastern regions suffered. In mexico four people are dead and 16 injured after flames engulfed a pennex oil platform in the gulf. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Right now its unclear if any oil spilled into the water. Clean up in the hard hit Northern Region of chile continues after last weeks devastating floods there. Crews are starting to clear the wreckage from homes swept away. Meanwhile rescue workers are using dogs to search for missing people. 57 are still unaccounted for at this point. 27 people have died in this. Its a different world we have to act differently. That is what california governor jerry brown said as he announced plans to try to lower water use by 25 in his state. The snowpack level are the lowest theyve been in 65 years. Bone says the historic drout remains unprecedented. California farmers are being hit the hardest. Many are choosing to take out Crop Insurance now afraid of lack of water will soon mean lack of harvest. Its a big price to pay. Crop insurance costs hundreds of thousands of dollars but its a gamble many farmers are taking now saying going without insurance is not worth the risk. Guys back to you. Well a great day on tap. We love it and the temperatures are even warmer than yesterday. And then tomorrow its going to be even warmer again. Were talking mid 70s tomorrow. Some areas are ahead of this front that well have come through could reach near 80. Wow. Along with that comes humidity. So we are going to see a nice couple days. We do have un and some cooler temperatures but nothing drastic. Lets take a lock at our temperatures so you probably need an extra layer and you wont need it for long as we head to the lower 70s this afternoon so a few degrees above where we were yesterday and then well keep on adding to that for tomorrow. Areas off to the north you might stay into the upper 60s but its still a good looking thursday. Were cool out there, 41 forgetters burg, fredrick 32 and manassas only 28 degrees. Nice recovery as we head into the 70s look back off to the west still rather warm well stay warmer tomorrow. Even though the clouds and a little bit of rain is headed our way for tomorrow the winds are so strong out of the south wet that well just head right up to the mid 70s. Today were quiet with a lot of sunshine through the afternoon temperatures stay into the mid 60s for not of the day but we will head to the lower 70s by late afternoon, early evening. Couple of clouds roll on in for this evening also this evening areas off to the west and west only through westminster, fredrick, hagerstown and back off could see a couple light showers so they will fade away and most of us stay pretty dry. Tomorrow we start off with a few showers and cloudy skies, breezy again but with those very strong winds out of the Southwest Well head to the mid 70s. Couple of scattered showers throughout the day even for your drive home but the main event when the front comes on through and brings thunderstorms, notice the time were at 10 00 at night so late friday into the wee hours of saturday morning. Here is a look, 72 for today, tomorrow yellow alert but really not seeing good downpours until friday night into the wee hours 1 002 00 a. M. Saturday morning. 75 degrees friday. We do cool down but nothing too drastic. 59 saturday with a lot of sunshine by the afternoon and it is going to be windy. A live look from our camera at dale boulevard shows the back ups on the north bound side thats the north bound side there causing delays. If youll be heading on that direction add 510 minutes to your drive time to get to your destination on time. Meantime sky 9 is in the area to show us how things shape up on the inner loop of the beltway approaching 66, you can see traffic is moving no problems there this morning. Meantime 270 for those heading south bound toward the beltway no issues this morning as you go into rockville toward the beltway youre looking at an issue and problem free commute. I want to let my metro riders know we are keeping a close eye on two situations on metro again with the yellow and blue line and the orange line we have delays on both of those lines. Youll want to add additional time to your drive time on your commute time because you dont drive on metro. Andrea and nick well send it back over to you. Way to break it down larry.
