We know our Police Employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times. The Police Commissioner went on to say dozens of interviews have been conducted and many more remain. Investigators are gathering and reviewing City Surveillance video that might help. He also vowed anyone who harmed freddie gray will be prosecuted. We are learning now freddie gray is not the first person to come out of a police van with some political injuries or the first to have died from them. Turns out Court Records show us baltimore cops have a disturbing history of being accused of intentionally roughing up handcuffed prisoners who cant brace themselves from being given what people on the street call the cowboy ride. They call it the cowboy ride or the rough ride, sort of a version of street justice where bliss throw somebody in the back of a street van. They cant police throw somebody in the back of a street van. They cant protect themself and slam on the brakes or take tight turns. Turns out baltimore has been on the losing end of millions of dollars of lawsuits involving this practice. His name was jeffrey alston, like freddie gray he ended up with a spinal cord injury after a rough ride after a baltimore arrest. A jury awarded him 39 million. When it does happen, its most definitely intentional. Reporter bill frederico handled both cases. Same scenario. We have an individual arrested thrown into the back of the paddy wagon and their hand behind their back and they get a rough ride. Theyre unbelted. The inside of these wagons are not padded. They cant protect themselves and they get thrown from one side to the other usually landing on their head and fracturing their neck. Reporter alston died after his injuries. On the street in baltimore this man had an account of his rough ride handcuffed unable to brace himself banged around in the caged rear of a police van. I guess thats your punishment. Reporter have they ever put a seatbelt on you . No. Reporter and this woman, 27yearold christineable got is suing christineable got is suing the Police Department claiming she was the victim of an intentional rough ride in 2012, photos showing the bruises she claimed to have endured. Baltimore has a policy of seatbelting all prisoners, but a Union Representative said freddie gray was not secured. So much of the attention in this freddie gray case is now focused on this socalled rough ride history. Was he intentionally banged around in the back of a police van in this sort of off the books Police Street justice type of thing known as a rough ride or not . A massive protest regarding the death of freddie gray is planned for tomorrow in baltimore. The wake for gray is sunday and his funeral is set for 11 a. M. Monday at new Shiloh Baptist church. We are following a developing story here in the district where police are looking for a man who punched another man on a metro escalator. We showed you the video at 5 00. Ellison barber is live outside the Eastern Market metro station. This is some disturbing video. Reporter it is. This is the metro station where around 1 p. M. Today a 69yearold man was viciously attacked. Police hope that the brutality in the video were about to show you will lead to someone coming forward with information. The argument between the two men seemed to have started on the metro and continued up the escalator. Both men seemed to be arguing when the young guy spits in the elderly mans face before punching him three times in the face. The man falls backwards down the escalator and the suspect runs away. The suspect ran out of the metro. Police have pictures of him from the outside cameras. He ran to the left towards pennsylvania avenue, but police are not sure where he went afterwards. The last camera they have ends at the end of the street. We spoke with a folks person from metro transit spokesperson from metro transit and they want everyone to look closely because the suspect is wearing distinct clothing, a black hooded sweatshirt with big lettering on one arm and black shoes with a bright stripe. Police say the brutality on that video is what they want people to Pay Attention to because they think someone will recognized this guy based on the clothing. Prosecutors charged robert wilson, 23, from oxon hill with felony child sex abuse and three more third degree sex abuse counts. Im very, very upset about whats being said about my nephew. The community at the university of Mary Washington is mourning the loss of a beloved student from mclean murdered 1 week ago from today. Grace mann was an activist who fought for evaluate, womens rights and an end to sex assault on campus. Police say 30yearold Steven Vander briel strangled grace in the home they shared with two other housemates. Police say there was no romantic involvement between the two. Vander briel is set to appear in court next month. If john hinckley, jr. Is granted more freedom, turns out he wants to start a band. At least thats testimony today from a psychiatrist who is treating the man who tried to kill president reagan and three others more than 30 years ago now. This is day three of the hearings into whether hinckley ought to be allowed to leave st. Elizabeths hospital altogether. His lawyer and Treatment Team say hes able to make that transition. It takes washington boulevard over route 110, but it wasnt build to handle the 72,000 vehicles that use it every day and its not pedestrian friendly. It looks pretty dangerous. Reporter the Old Washington boulevard bridge over route 110 right next to the pentagon is structurally deficient built in 1941. Its seen better days. Its not unsafe to drive on, but it needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. Reporter the construction project begins monday morning just in time for the commute. The three lanes in each direction will be reduced to two. Were telling people just to expect about a 10 minute delay. Reporter the new bridge will still be three lanes each way, but it will be 9 feet wider with a 14foot shared use path on the pentagon side and an 8foot walkway on the west side. We have clear skies, a perfect recipe for a very cold night. The only thing that could save it would be high clouds by dawn, but i think the damage will be done by the time they come in.
