Are wrapping up their first day of commuting under the safetrack plan and some are returning home fired and frustrated. The Safetrack Program begins with crews focusing on the orange and silver lines in virginia with continuous single tracking between boston and East Falls Church. Thats where we find Garrett Haake tonight who has been out talking to riders about their commute. What are you hearing there, garrett . Reporter you can think of this as ground zero for the safetrack plan over the next 13 days with both orange and silver lines through this station single tracking. Even have the mobile command center set up behind me. They are also handing out these fliers here warning of extreme crowding and delays on these lines and tonight we saw both. Passengers packed like sardines in the metro train cars returning to virginia from d. C. Tonight for the real but the real frustration could be heard on the platform itself where passengers told us they spent far more time than they had anticipated today, thanks to delays. Metro had encouraged riders to use buses or other means of transportation during this 13 for many folks that just wasnt an option. Well, theres no other way. Either i take the metro or i dont go to work and, well, kind of need the money so i guess im getting up instead of, you know, half hour earlier, im getting up 45 minutes earlier to make sure i make it on time. Reporter how long have you been waiting here . I dont know but its been long enough that i had to put my shoes down and my bag down a couple of times, so its been a while. Reporter and tonight what we saw plenty of construction workers coming and going from the station, much of the actual work was happening out of sight. We expect that construction to become much more visible as this process drags on. Reporting at the East Falls Church metro, Garrett Haake, wusa9. Metro did ask commuters to work from home or find another way to get around and looks like they listened. The agency tweeted that overall ridership today was down about 1 from a typical monday. However, when you look along the orange and silver lines, theres a big drop, especially at the West Falls Church station where there was about half as many commuters on a typical day. Wusa9s ellen bryan talked with those who talked extra patience and rode the rails this morning. Good morning, good morning. Reporter handed out 1800 express papers for the vienna metro stop every morning. Free, no refunds. Reporter on the first day of safetrack they probably wont hit that goal. A lot of people missing. Yeah. Folks, theres a brandnew shuttle bus behind you that goes directly to the pentagon. Reporter fort the first for the first few hours its running smooth. Reporter but once people were inside the metro it required more patience. Typically it sits for about two to three minutes and then moves into d. C. Reporter today riders sat for more than 20 minutes. Wait time here what normally takes me about half an hour will probably take me closer to an hour. Step back, doors closing. Reporter couple stops later another delay. We cannot closed. Reporter everyone unloaded, found new seats and continued their commute. But the delays caught up with passengers forcing people to call into work late. And by the end of the morning, some commutes tripled their normal time. Delays on top of already planned delays makes a commute that you thought was going to be an hour closer to hour and a half. Reporter many people started talking about driving into work tomorrow but the number 1 idea, i heard from a lot of people, was carpooling. In vienna, ellen bryan, wusa9. Also a lot of people use do you knowers car poole used ubers carpooling feature. In Arlington Uber pool rides were up 25 .
