There is sharp new criticism tonight of the dal that has become the focus of the ebola story in this country and it comes from a nurse who works there. Brianna aguirre says the hospital was not prepared to deal with the disease. The hospital is where first u. S. Diagnosed ebola patient died and where two nurses who treated him caught the disease. One is now being cared for in atlanta. The other was sent to suburban washington. We have team of correspondents covering the ebola story. First anna westerner in dallas. Anna . Reporter jim, we spoke late this afternoon with that nurse aguirre. She did not work on Thomas Eric Duncans case, but she did help treat her coworker, nurse nina pham, when she became sick with ebola. I saw a chaotic scene. It wasnt organized. It wasnt safe. No one really was in charge. Every time id ask who is in charge, and i went around and around and around with my hospital over who is in charge, and the final answer is i was. Reporter what did you see that so disturbed you . The most disturbing things i saw were basically breeching of basic Infection Control principles. I saw people that were supposed to be in charge the c. D. C. And infectious control department, telling nurse telling doctors to do things that were not safe. They asked. They told. They instructed a doctor coming out of a patients room that was in the process of being ruled out for ebola they were there because of the suspicion of ebola, they told that doctor, go ahead, youre all suited up, just go on to the next patients room. Reporter why are you speaking out now . The bottom line is that i believe that its information that should be known. It should have been known a while ago, not this late into this, in dallas, in my hospital. Its too little too late. Reporter now today the hospital said in a statement that Thomas Eric Duncan, the first patient to eventually die from ebola was proved directly to a private room and placed in isolation upon his second visit to the e. R. , and that staff wore the appropriate personal protective equipment as recommended by the centers for Disease Control at that time. Now, aguirre says she is not showing any symptoms of ebola at this time, but if she did she would not feel comfortable being treated at her own hospital. Axelrod anna westerner in dallas. Anna, thank you. One of the nurses who caught ebola at the dallas hospital amber vinson, flew to cleveland and back to dallas on monday. The c. D. C. Will now be monitoring other passengers from both those planes because they say vinson may have shown symptoms earlier than originally thought. Federal Health Officials were on capitol hill today. They came under fire for the handling of the ebola situation. More now from Congressional Correspondent nancy cordes. Reporter under oath the c. D. C. Tom frieden argued that would make americans less safe. If passengers are now allowed to come directly, there is a high likelihood that they will find another way to get here, and we wont be able to track them. Unfortunately in our initial treatment of mr. Duncan, despite our best intentions and a highly Skilled Medical Team we made mistakes. We did not correctly diagnose his symptoms as those of ebola and we are deeply sorry. Michael burgess of texas wanted to know why the two nurses duncan infected have been evacuated from dallas. So is the reason she is having to be removed because the personnel are no longer willing to stay at presbyterian the take care of her . Texas presbyterian is really dealing with a difficult situation. Theyre working very hard because of the events of the past week, they are now dealing with at least 50 Health Care Workers who may potentially have been exposed. Reporter he insisted the best way to prevent more cases is to fight the virus at its source, across the atlantic. What were finding is that its moving quickly and theres a real risk it will spread to other parts of africa. Therefore, the key ingredient to progress there is speed. Reporter he said the c. D. C. Has now sent 140 staffers to west africa, but 11 of the 13 republicans in that hearing wanted more. Several schools and two states were shut down today because either Staff Students or parents had potential contact with one of the two dallas nurses diagnosed with ebola. In bolton, texas three campuses were closed for whats called deep cleaning. Ebola precautions also closed three ohio schools in cleveland and in akron. Cbs news has learned that the c. D. C. Is considering protocol changes for protective gear. More about that now from chief medical correspondent dr. Jon lapook in washington. Reporter currently this is the level of protection required. It has one layer of gloves, fluid resistant gown, eye shield and facemask. Many in the Health Care Community feel this is an inadequate level of protection. I think the c. D. C. And everyone has been naive and ill prepared in getting ahold of. This weve never had an agent this infectious and this risky. Reporter dr. Bruce farber is head of Infectious Diseases at north shore j hospital where they are prepared to use a higherlevel gear including a hood, leg and shoe covers. The c. D. C. Says the use of full body suits like those used i west africa is also under consideration. Sean kaufman trained Health Care Workers at Emory Universityital when two americans dr. Kent brantly and Nancy Writebol were treated there this summer. Hes now doing Infection Control in liberia. He says hes been warning the c. D. C. That the guidelines were irresponsible. When you look at what c. D. C. Is recommending for what clinicians should wear when working with a patient with ebola, its really unbelievable because a patient can produce high quantities of very very viral fluid, the fluid that can spread the virus in very unpredictable ways. To me it makes no sense. Reporter kaufman says equipment and treatment arent worth anything if the gear is not safely removed and that takes trains, practice and supervision or its not like having any protection at all. Axelrod jon there was video of the transfer of the second gear, and there is man near the plane not wearing any protective gear, which would appear to be a breech of protocol. What have you learned of that . I thought it was a breech of protocol, too, jumping to the wrong conclusion. It turns out that man is a physician. He was following protocol. Hes the eyes and ears on the tarmac because the people wearing the protective equipment, they dont have very good peripheral vision. And so this is phoenix air. Theyve transported 11 patients with ebola. Worker has been infected. And so it shows you if you do follow protocol, you can protect the Health Care Workers. Axelrod dr. Base near baghdads airport, 1,500 men are going throw basic training. Thats 50 more than when isis invaded iraq. Kernel fouad qadem daoud says theyve seen how isis slaughtered iraqi Security Forces and they want revenge. The basic Training Course lasts 45 days. These young recruits behind me are almost done, two weeks from now theyll be heading out into combat. Theyre called police, but theyre trained like the military. In this exercise, sharpshooters surround the house. Then the swat team bursts in. [gunfire] and arrests the kidnapper. But most of the work these men will do is less dramatic. And more dangerous. That is manned checkpoints and try to stop suicide bombers like the ones that killed at least 50 people today in baghdad. Some recruits are here for the love of their country, some for the money about 800 a month. But all of them know theyre heading into a vicious war with every chance they wont come back. Jim, if these men are going to perform well in battle, theyre going to need good leadership, and thats seen a significant failure, at least until now inside the iraqi command. There is fan there and for that reason im being told that Governor Scott will not join us for this debate. Reporter Governor Scott quickly ended his holdout, but both men were asked to air this out. Crist shrugged it off as no big deal. Is there anything wrong with being comfortable . Reporter but then the governor claimed he had been late because of crist. I waited until we figured out if he was going to show up. He said he wasnt going to. He said he wasnt going to come to the debate. Gonzalez, who jumped the fence and got all the way into the east room last month was originally charged with unlawfully entering a restricted building while carrying a deadly weapon. The new charges include sauling or resisting officers. The new york medical examiner has ruled on the cause of joan rivers death. That story coming up. Yze.
