This morning the defense team in the Boston Marathon bombing trial begins the first full day of testimony. Prosecutors rested their case monday following some of the most graphic and emotional images of the trial. In boston where jury deliberations could begin as early as this week. Reporter good morning. Over 15 days prosecutors called 92 witnesses. For jurors there have been some emotional moments including yesterday hearing from the man who performed the autopsy on young martin richard. This never before seen photo was taken one minute before the bombing. Dzhokhar tsarnaev can be seen standing behind a tree behind his youngest victim. Chief medical examiner showed jurors the clothes richard was wearing that day pointing out a gaping hole in his shirt where the blast ripped open his torso. He held up a pair of the boys shredded pants. One piece of metal testified appeared to have entered and exited richards body severing his spine. There were small fragments of wood and black plastic. The report also found that the majority of the kids who developed paralysis after several months had not recovered completely. They still had weakness in their limbs. So again, whatever we saw the chase sky 9 was over was still unrelated the that person was taken out of the car, handcuffed, and is in police custody, and we dont know what that was about. We were told he was arrested just last week or so for a string of robberies in the annandale area. He was known as the bicycle bandit, would use that bicycle as a getaway of sorts in those robberies. So he was locked up because of those robberies, and just recently tried to take his life. Police officers, the chief telling us just a short time ago that he attempted to hurt himself, and that is why hes being transported here to a nova Fairfax Hospital. Early this morning. It was 3 00 a. M. , and he was being escorted by two prove guards. Now, the chief telling us that is not normal protocol. Typically a prisoner would come here to the hospital escorted by Police Officers. In this case, it was a private Security Firm, two guards that were escorting this prisoner to the hospital. Some kind of fight followed, and he was able to overpower the two guards, get the gun, and take off. And so he has now, after a thorough search of the hospital, confirmed to have left the hospital and left the ground. As you have been reporting, that getaway car, a stolen vehicle, silver toyota camry that police are currently looking for, and they are asking residents to be on alert. There have been reverse 911 calls telling folks to stay in their homes. Andrea, you reported many schools in the area are spring break, so children are not at school. So everyone is told to stay inside and be on alert. She is local in the general area. His family is local as well, and so police are trying to track down his family members, his girlfriend as well. Not certain if he has coordinated with them, be they want to know if they do have any information in regards to why this happened and what is happening now, and where the suspect could be. They are looking for the suspect in that getaway car, traveling in the nearby area, and wanting to get in touch with his family members, his girlfriend to see if this is a coordinated escape plan. We asked the chief if he had any inklings that this could have all been planned, that he made this attempt on his life to get the hospital in order to coordinate some kind of. Of course thats just speculation. He could not confirm any of that. You have to wonder what is going on in the mind of it Police Officers as they continue to search for the suspect. More than four, almost five hours into this search, started early at 3 00 a. M. And here we are, daybreak, and the daylight sun is out. And we still are looking for this suspect. So residents in this area are told to buckle down, stay inside their homes, keep their doors locked. This man is armed, and considered to be very dangerous. Back to you. Again, this man should be considered armed and dangerous. He was serving time for a bank robbery, federal charges with alexandria city police. And from there, he apparently attempted to harm himself. Thats why he was bought here initially to fairfax anova hospital. That is when he was being watched over by a private guard. That private guard was overpowered allegedly by assan aciee according to police. A shot was fired, although its still not clear who fired that shot. No one was hit. That is when that assan iceaa ran out of the hospital on foot in a hospital gown, no shoes, armed and dangerous. We know he overtook that silver camry in a neighborhood off cindy lane and back lake road. Police have not been able to find him. Theyre asking everyone out there to keep your eyes open not only for this man, but also this vehicle, the 2002 silver camry. I thought somebody was really hurt. And the car rolled and the car went up the street at a real high speed. Evidently, she got out and she ran. And the woman who ran was the owner, we believe, of the vehicle. The 2002 toyota camry. License plate, if you see this car, please call Fairfax County police. Virginia license plate xzp8153 and from what we just heard from that witness, the vehicle has front end damage. So, again, just defining one of several dramatic scenes here today, tense moments with Delia Goncalves described the first scene. There are a lot of other locations where people are looking for Wossen Assaye. They are trying to find out if this was a coordinated escape, would he be trying to make his way to her . So far, nothing on that front except they have posted a picture of the mans girlfriend and i guess they want you to take a look at her so that just in case he was trying to make contact with her, this is the picture of the woman supposedly, according to Fairfax County police, if the girlfriend of the suspect of Wossen Assaye. They dont want to speculate if she had a role or not, but the question remains, is he trying to seek her out . Thats why this picture is out thereto right now. Not drawing any other conclusions. We want you to take a look at his picture again, because if you see this man, they say do not approach him because he is dangerous and he is armed. Wossen assaye, well known to police. They have a nickname for him, the bicycle bandit. Thats how he would make an escape. He was being held on a charge in the alexandria area. One shot was fired this morning. Whether he fired that shot or the security officer, that is still under investigation, were told, but again, he does have that Security Officers gun now is what we understand. What our reporter have pointed out on the live report, that they have given us throughout the morning is the fact that Wossen Assaye was in the custody of private Security Guards, seems to be a different protocall. If youre in the custody of Fairfax County police, you have armed police guards with you. You are usually handcuffed to a bed, a chair, or something. Making your escape very difficult and Fairfax County police have said nothing like this has happened. This is not something they have to worry about, because usually the person in custody is secured to wherever they are. If they are in a bed or in a chair, they are secured by handcuffs and chains. That will be a question going forward, how that ended up transpiring. As far as the hospital is concerned, the all clear has been given at Inova Fairfax. Lets check in with her, nikki. Reporter the update here is we have seen a lot of police activity. I want to take a step out of the way so you can see. We have seen a lot of these ambulances and Police Chases speeding by here. The hospital is now back open. The lockdown has been lifted. So we have been out here all morning since 6 00. We have been telling you that with Wossen Assaye. I asked police, is that unusual to have a private Security Company . He said he cant comment on that protocall. He said that he did not know. So, what we do know is that this man over powered one of those Security Guards. There was a struggle for the gun. He got that gun. There was a shot that was fired. We dont know who fired that shot. No one was hurt. No one was hit. Wossen assaye was barefoot at the time. He went to the scene scene. He carjacked a woman, took her silver camry. Xzph153. A 2002 silver camry. Were told that woman is okay, but then Wossen Assaye took that vehicle and fled. We dont know where he went. Police have not made contact with him. But if you see that man, take a live look at that picture of Wossen Assaye. He is 170pounds, he was last seen wearing his hospital gown and barefoot. He is considered armed and dangerous because at last check, he did have that Security Guards gun on him. If you see this man, you are asked to call police immediately. Keep your eye out for the vehicle as well. Severe front end damage. His girlfriend lives in the area, so, we have her picture as well. If you see that, you are asked to call police. We dont know if this was a planned escape that can be a way to find this man. Initially the reason, i should tell you why this man was brought here to the hospital to be treated. He attempted to harm himself. He was known as a bicycle bandit and police know him very well. So again, if you see that man, he is armed and dangerous in that silver toyota camry. You should call police immediately and stay away from him at all possible. Do not try and chase him, just call police immediately. Thats the latest from the scene, the p. I. O. Is here next to me. And we just heard from nikki, much of the situation right now, the incident cleared up and so gallows road now open. We talked about those areas that were initially closed off. Again, that was affecting parts of the beltway, inner and outer lanes of the beltway, as police were searching for this suspect. This armed suspect armed and dangerous. As a result, they have now reopened the exit along the beltway. Also, folks traveling on the beltway on the inner and outer loop. Also, if you are traveling in other areas nearby the hospital, were talking about wood burn road, other areas to Inova Fairfax, you will be able to get around now. It is important for those folks that live out in if the inner belt area and close to the hospital to remain vigilant as we heard authorities talk about today, that this suspect is still on the loose right now. What we thought was a high speed chase involving that vehicle that we initially thought was related to that situation, turns out is unrelated. That earlier crash that we saw take place on the Fairfax County parkway is unrelated to the search for this now escaped individual. We saw him go initially northbound on the parkway, then southbound, then turn around and he was initially cornered off by police there. So, that is again, unrelated to this situation, but folks in this area are being told to stay vigilant. If they see anything suspicious to contact authorities and they will certainly be out there. Of course, the focus now is taking place on cindy lane and back lake road. Thats where the get away car that the suspect, they believe he is currently in, was actually apprehended in that area. They are focusing their efforts on that area and also looking around the hospital as well. But again, the hospital is open now, so folks traveling to fairfax, Inova Fairfax will get in and out of the hospital. Luckily, the good news is no one was hurt. So, the authorities as well as people inside the hospital are safe. They are okay. And what we heard from on some of the sound from Delia Goncalves, the hospital staff train for this year round. Stemming from an incident at 3 00 is when we believe the prisoner, Wossen Assaye escaped from inova Fairfax Hospital. 3 00, held on federal charges at the time. Based out of alexandria. We just received an email from officials in alexandria who said he actually attempted to commit suicide last friday. So thats what brought him to the hospital on friday and that led us to this morning around 3 00. Over powered a guard, were told, took a gun, one shot was fired and again, that is when the search began for Wossen Assaye, as he took the gun from the Security Guard. And were looking at the screen, if you take a manynt and look at your screen. Youre looking at Wossen Assaye. And the woman believed to be his girlfriend. Now police have not made any accusations against her, but they are interested in talking to her and questioning her as to what she might know about his where abouts. Whether he is attempting to contact her or make his way to her. This is a shot of inova. This one of the largest in the inova system. 800 plus beds here. And it had been on lockdown until an hour ago. And now, it is open for business. Emergency calls can be brought there as well and again, Delia Goncalves is on her way to cindy lane where we believe the suspect carjacked a woman, took her car, and is now on the run. So even though the hospital was no longer on lockdown, just the site of all of that Police Presence will slow things down. Larry has been given you alternate routes in and around that area. It covers what most people think is covered in the room rate, a towel, a newspaper, access to wifi. And the thing is some of the charges get really outrageous. Some of them may exceed the cost of the room. I saw one where you said a welcome drink was resort fee im thinking dont give me that. If im going to be charged for it im thinking you are glad im here. It gets to a definition of terms. There is nothing hospitalable about it. Any negotiating . Everything is negotiable. Everything . Everything. Forget the posted rate. If you dont ask you dont get and if you dont ask and find out later you can dispute it. We looked at a number of Different Hotels and found resort fees 60 a night over and above what the room rate is. Ritz carlton 95 a night. Fisher island resort 107 a night for the resort fee including a newspaper, beach towels, in room safe Valet Service and access to the fitness center. Good morning and welcome to wusa9s continuing coverage of breaking news out of Fairfax County. About six hours ago, a prisoner escaped from inova Fairfax Hospital. Nikki burdine is live at inova Fairfax Hospital where she has been all morning long as this incident unfolded. Nikki, whats the latest . New information about this escaped prisoner. Again, his name is wossen iowa assaye. He was initially arrested for bank robbery. Then it was on friday, the 27th, he attempted suicide. Thats why he was brought here to Inova Fairfax on friday. It was 3 00 this morning that Wossen Assaye was in custody. He was not in custody with police. He was being watched and held by a private Security Company. There were two guards there watching over him. We dont know if he was handcuffed or what kind of security measures were in place. He was in one specific wing of this hospital. We know there was a struggle for the gun and a shot was fired. No one was hurt. No one was hit, thankfully, and iowa assaye got the gun and ran out of the house. Police are looking for this mans girlfriend and they say that he may be with her. They say she may know how to get in touch with him. We know that right after he got out of the hospital, we know assaye stole a silver toyota camry. Plate is xzp8153. Really scary moment for the woman driving that toyota camry. He carjacked her. She got out of the car. Shes okay. But then he took her car and ran off with it. We know that car has severe front end damage. So if you see that 2002 silver toyota camry, you should call police immediately. Police have not been able to make contact with, but i want you to listen to some sound from a neighbor who heard this all happen. Drove through the front yard, then i heard a big slam and i heard lady screaming like crazy. And the car rolled this way and i ran to try and help. And the car rolled in and the car took off up the street at a high speed. Evidently, she got out and she ran. Thats the good news. Very scary moments for her, for everyone involved and then initially, here at the hospital. Because this hospital was on lockdown. We first got out here at 3 00 this morning. We were hearing this was an active shooter investigation. Even though no one was actually hit with that shot that was fired. The hospital is on lockdown for several hours. Patients were inside. Speaking with hospital employee and he said that all the patients were safe. Everyone was calm. It was business as usual inside. No one was allowed in or out of the hospital. You can imagine how scary it must be for everyone in that hospital at that time. Everyone is watching that carjacking happening. And now anyone who must be seeing this man driving around in this toyota camry. This man is armed and dangerous and you should not approach him. You should call police immediately. He was last seen wearing a hospital gown. If you see him, call police. He is considered armed and dangerous. That is the latest here, the Public Information officer is on the scene.
