Print Jason Kovach said he went along as a backup of sorts, carrying a kid’s aluminum baseball bat as he accompanied a work buddy on a weird, late-night errand about 11 p.m. in September 2016. His coworker was going through a heated divorce and had gotten an odd call from a stranger purporting to have evidence that could be used against him in family court. The caller identified himself as a private investigator, and said he’d leave a packet containing the information tacked to a pole along a very dark dirt road off Avenida Soledad in Carlsbad. The coworker, Greg Mulvihill, asked Kovach, who lived in the same San Marcos apartment complex, to tag along as he went to check it out.
