Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – This weekend begins two weekends in a row of Final Exercises at the University of Virginia, though both are happening with limits. The Class of 2020 did not get to walk the Lawn last year because of the pandemic, and degrees were conferred in virtual ceremonies. The hope had been to be able to walk the lawn last October, but the pandemic and state emergency regulations prohibited that from happening. However, the regulations have relaxed enough that the Classes of 2020 and 2021 both can have live ceremonies on Grounds this month. The Class of 2020 is this weekend will have two ceremonies Sunday at Scott Stadium… and the Class of 2021 will have three days of staggered ceremonies for the five schools starting Friday, May 21. Those ceremonies will also be at Scott Stadium. University leaders say the ceremonies must happen at Scott Stadium and not on the Lawn as is the tradition because it’s the only venue on Grounds that can accommodate the ceremonies under current state guidelines. The guidelines limit outdoor capacity at 5000 participants, and indoors to 500.
