University of Alberta researchers are using artificial intelligence to improve how diseases are diagnosed with a new model created in part by a student killed on Flight PS752 in Tehran, Iran.
The team of computer scientists created a new deep-learning model — a type of machine learning that uses algorithms to find patterns, then make models and predictions — that helps a computer learn to identify diseases on medical scans faster and more accurately. Pouneh Gorji , who was 25 when Ukraine International Airlines flight was shot down by Iranian missiles and fatally crashed in January 2020, helped redesign the algorithm through her research on identifying fatty liver through AI.
