That we should see an increase in the strength of these storms. Thats whats happening and thats why the severe thunderstorm watch has been extended into the philadelphia area and new jersey. The flood threat for tonight is actually less than it was yesterday but a lot of lightning and also a lot of high winds. Those are the main threats. But we still have some threat of some hail and even a tornado or two in parts of the area. Lets check in with meteorologist Sheena Parveen for more on exactly what to expect the next few hours. The reason why that watch is going so late is because of all the heat and humidity in place and thats what you really felt today. Temperatures still climbing through part of the area. Thats what will help fuel a lot of these storms as they move in tonight. 85 in philadelphia so we have gone up a couple degrees in the past hour. 85 degrees in reading, parts of delaware still at about the upper 80s and as we go into tonight, those temperatures will start to drop as the rain moves in. So again, the heat and humidity that helps keep the storms intense and possibly severe as they move through. Lets take a look at the timing. Right now we are dry but by about 6 00 we should already see some storms in parts of berks county Lancaster County through the allentown area Lehigh Valley and into the poconos. At this time some of these storms could be producing locally damaging wind. That line should be getting closer to montgomery and upper bucks county by 7 00 p. M. Then we should start to see storms developing through new jersey and parts of delaware. That area will be approaching philadelphia, too, up into trenton and Mercer County and thats by 8 00 tonight. Pretty quickmoving storms. By 9 00 they should really be approaching the shore and we will start to dry up from points west of that. As we go through the next few hours we will be having storms moving in. They will move through the area. I think most of us will be seeing storms around and some of those could be potentially severe with the threat the highest threat seeing damaging winds across the area. I will show you more on the timing of this and we will talk about the threats locally and take a close look at how the weather will shape up for the weekend straight ahead. Wherever you are, track the storms with the nbc 10 news app. You can get live radar and weather alerts sent to your smart phone or tablet. The nbc 10 investigators dug through records and talked to more than a dozen Emergency Managers. They found out very few have specific evacuation plans and as Investigative ReporterMitch Blacher discovered, the federal government says they dont have to. Reporter we went county by county in the Delaware Valley. We found some Emergency Managers have different opinions on how you should be evacuated in a Nuclear Emergency. More than 20 Million People in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware live within 50 miles of a Nuclear Power plant. But the nbc 10 investigators found in the Delaware Valley theres no plan to evacuate people beyond ten miles because the federal government says there doesnt need to be. I have some concerns. Reporter u. S. Senator bob casey is part of the Senate National security working group. The Nuclear Regulatory commission would listen to the concerns that i and a lot of people have as to whether or not that ten mile radius is enough. Reporter around our region the opinions vary. If the Nuclear RegulatoryCommission Says that that has to change, it will change. Reporter in pennsylvanias Montgomery County we found little interest in planning for something regulators say is unnecessary. Could you take the initiative and make a plan without the Nuclear Regulatory commission . We could but as i said youre not talking about a county of 20,000 people. Youre talking about a county of 800,000 people. If you make that change youre heavily taxing scarce resources. Reporter we reviewed the countys plans to evacuate the ten miles surrounding the limerick generating station. Its a specific plan one that says areas up to 50 miles downwind may be affected during an accident. Still, county officials like many in our region say if a ten mile plan is enough for regulators its enough for them. We dont have a need or a requirement to do that. Reporter in delaware the states Emergency Management director is also confident the plans in place are sufficient. But in Camden County we are like a bulls eye in the middle of three nuclear plants. Reporter the Emergency Management accordcoordinator is concerned. He knows Camden County sits within 50 miles of three nuclear plants. Hes not required to have a specific nuclear evacuation plan but thinks the region needs one. We have to protect the population. That really is concerning. Reporter they all point the finger at the nrc, saying the nrc says we dont have to do it so we dont do it. Yeah. Reporter nrc regional director dan dorman says there would be time to evacuate beyond ten miles if it came to that. We dont see the need for the preplanned measures. Reporter senator casey says the evacuation plans need to be expanded. He says he has a plan. To continue to press the nrc to do their job. Reporter the nbc 10 investigators asked for nuclear evacuation plans from every county in the Delaware Valley. Only Delaware County told us it could not release that information. If you live within ten miles of a plant, you should know the evacuation plan. Im Mitch Blacher, nbc 10 news. Com and the nbc 10 app. Well we are keeping our eye on some Severe Weather as we go through tonight and this is going to be for the entire area pretty much. First alert day out for the rest of the day today, until about 11 00 tonight for some areas. Severe storms are going to stay in the forecast. The main threat being damaging winds and we cannot rule out the chance for an isolated tornado, kind of like we saw last week with the storms if you remember. The entire area with the exception of parts of delaware under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 00 tonight. This means we do have the potential of seeing some very strong thunderstorms with damaging winds and just off to our west which includes Lancaster County thats a tornado watch until 9 00 tonight. Thats why we really cant rule out the chance for a tornado. Thats going to stay in the threat tracker for the area. But i think a majority of what well see would be damaging winds. Thats going to be the highest risk with the storms today. Lightning will also be up there, too. Cant rule out potential for localized flooding and also with any strong storms we can always at least see some small hail across the area. Now, the severe threat, all the areas in yellow thats a slight risk of severe storms. That in fact includes all of delaware and new jersey. But the highest risk is going to be this orange area so thats mostly philadelphia and points north and west up through the Lehigh Valley and poconos. This is all going to stay around through tonight. The closest storms are just off to our west approaching the Lehigh Valley. I dont think they will really get here until after 6 00. One right around harrisburg that one is severe and that should be moving into Lancaster County soon. Its mostly moving to the east around 40 miles an hour so by 6 15 it should be approaching lancaster. With this storm we can see winds near 60 miles an hour if it keeps up its intensity. Lot of lightning, heavy rain and of course potential for at least small hail. Wide look shows you all the storms off to the west. They are moving in this direction and i expect everyone to at least see something out of this if not a severe storm moving through. I think we will have some of those through this evening. Temperatures are still warm in about the mid 80s with the humidity and what this does is pretty much fuels the thunderstorms. It will keep the intensity up as we go through tonight even after the sun sets in some cases. We got pretty warm today. Take a look at future weather. As we go into the next hour some storms will start to move in. By 6 00 p. M. , areas north and west berks county Lancaster County, and also the poconos. Then movin
