Another hot day tomorrow but there is some relief in the forecast. We will talk about that coming up. Hot weather brings a spike in crime. At least nine people were shot in philadelphia overnight. I did some checking and in philadelphia, the month that saw the most murders last year was august. The Previous Year it was april and july. People are more on edge when theyre hot and sweaty. Reporter last night, Philadelphia Police logged more than half a dozen shootings in a matter of hours. Is it a coincidence the violence erupted after what felt like one of the hottest days of the summer . Research suggests that there can be a correlation between environment and behavior. He remembered the days he was an officer on the street. According to police the gunman even shot at the victims father who chased after the getaway car. Reporter earlier today, i also spoke at length over the phone with a psychology professor from temple university. He tells me its a number of factors that can contribute to this summertime violence. The group plans on marching to two different locations where Senior Citizens were shot last week both of them innocent bystanders. Nbc 10 spoke to one of those victims. 79yearold Lula Mae Hillman was sitting on her front step last tuesday when a gun fight broke out. She was hit by a stray bullet. Fortunately shes okay. Right now at 5 00 the search has resumed for a swimmer who went missing in the Delaware River yesterday. Richardson disappeared while in the water at bristol wharf in bucks county. Witnesses told us they heard his cries for help. His aunt tells us divers returned to the scene today. Officials suspended the search yesterday because of dangerous currents. Police have identified another man who disappeared while swimming across the Delaware River yesterday in burlington county. Crews recovered the 26yearolds body last night. He was the father of two young children. Police say scott and his friends were trying to swim across the river to Burlington Island last night. There is an abandoned Amusement Park there but witnesses say scott was having trouble staying afloat and went under water. Several people on the shore jumped in to try to save him but could not. What started as a traffic stop ended with a Police Officer shooting two teenagers in burks county over the weekend. It started when a reading Police Officer tried to pull over a car last night but the driver didnt stop. The officers chased the suspect to highland avenue. The 17yearold driver got trapped on a dead end street and thats when police say he rammed the patrol car twice. The officer opened fire wounding the driver and another teenager inside the car. This is an Ongoing Investigation. There may be more charges filed in the future but at this point, its an Ongoing Investigation by the Central Berks Police department and the district attorneys office. The teenaged driver now faces weapons charges after police found a stolen gun inside the car. Both teenagers are expected to be okay. Back in philadelphia a sting operation in kensington nets 68 arrests. Investigators nabbed 19 drug dealers and 49 buyers over a twoday period last week. Almost a buyers were from the suburb. Crack and cocaine was seized. Turning to the budget battle pennsylvania has gone 19 days and counting without a new budget. Nbc 10 at the Montgomery County courthouse this afternoon where state legislators called on the governor to make concessions on the budget. They say hes acting like a bully instead of working toward a solution and they want him to back down on tax hikes. A request to increase taxes at historic levels ignores those who have to pick up the tab. His proposal increases taxes on every single income level. We must say no. The Governors Office released a statement in response saying these lawmakers pretend to support education funding, and forcing Oil Companies to pay their fair share when theyre in the philadelphia area but when theyre in harrisburg they do the opposite. Now to the latest in the corruption trial for new jersey senator bob menendez. Today the senators lawyers asked a federal judge to throw out the case against menendez. They argue the government improperly showed evidence to a grand jury that should have been offlimits. Prosecutors charged menendez in april with accepting gifts and bribes from a florida doctor in exchange for political favors. Senator menendez says he and the doctor have been friends for years and he did nothing illegal. The trial for menendez is set for october. Get this. Septa says it will try again after its first attempt to sell Regional Rail pope passes crashed the website. The passes for the papal visit went on sale at 9 00 but septa says it immediately started getting calls and social media messages that the website wasnt letting customers buy those passes. I couldnt find anyplace where you could actually make a purchase. There was nothing on my screen that you could click on. We tested 900,000 visits to the site and 1700 Transactions Per Second and things worked well over the weekend. This morning, however, we were overwhelmed. A spokesman for the family of Mohammad Youssuf abdulazeez says the kuwaitborn man was treated by a child psychiatrist for depression when he was about 12 years old. The Spokesman Says the 24yearold also fought drug and alcohol abuse and spent time in jordan last year to get clean. Abdulazeez was killed in a shootout with police last thursday after opening fire at two military sites in chattanooga. Four marines and one navy officer died in the attack. While the shooters motive is still unclear, this attack has sparked more concerns about homegrown terrorism. For philadelphias top fbi agent, the threat is nothing new. As he gets ready to step down hes talking with nbc 10 about some of the plots he helped prevent. Nbc 10s Mitch Blacher joins us with his story. Reporter this is a rare glimpse into the fbi world. The special agent in charge was remarkably candid as he described his 29 year career. Right now i believe for me its one of the scariest times in recent history on terrorism. Reporter ed hanko has just nine days left in the fbi. We are no longer able to see a lot of their communications. Reporter his 29 years fighting crime and preventing terror attacks wont help decode the encrypted messages terror organizations are now using. That is the biggest thing that keeps me up at night. That were going to miss something. That were going to miss something and there is going to be an attack there is going to be an explosion. Reporter he cleans out his desk remembering his wins like discovering an arresting Philadelphia Resident keona thomas, who is accused of plotting to participate in an isis suicide mission. We were very lucky that she didnt go fully that way. We had enough information so that we could charge her. We will talk more with him about that story at 6 00. The landmark nuclear deal between iran and six world powers cleared another hurdle when the agreement was unanimously endorsed this morning. Under the deal Irans Nuclear program will be curbed for a decade. In Exchange Iran will be freed of crippling International Sanctions but the sanctions would snap back into place if iran failed to meet its obligations. The u. S. Congress has 60 days to decide whether to approve or reject the deal. For the first time in five decades a cuban flag is flying over the Cuban Embassy in washington, d. C. Humidity wont be as bad as today but through the afternoon, temperatures expected to be in the 90s. We go through the later afternoon, early evening hours. By 5 00 we could have showers around maybe a couple thunderstorms.
