We sound like a broken record, but theres a lot to get to. There really is, including that powerful earthquake in mexico, and tsunami warning overnight. Lets start with Hurricane Irma. And where things stand right now with this monster storm. All of south florida is now under a hurricane warning with the region set to begin feeling the effects of this storm sometime tomorrow. Mass evacuations labeled unprecedented by miamis mayor are ramping up. Were seeing long traffic delays on the two major highways that head north out of florida. And check out the scene at Miami International airport right now. Its packed with people scrambling to try get away. With so many drivers fleeing the storm, as you might expect, gas is in short supply. At one point on thursday, more than 40 of stations in miami and Fort Lauderdale were out of fuel. So now gas trucks are being given Police Escorts to help them get to the stations faster. And right now, turks and caicos, bahamas, cuba are feeling the brunt of the hurricane force, and claiming the death of 12 people so far. When all is said and done, nearly 50 Million People will be affected by this storm, leading the red cross to prepare for, a quote, major humanitarian response. As you might expect, weve got this all covered for you. Lester holt and al made their way to miami. Lester, why dont we start with you. Good morning. Hey, matt, good morning. Overnight you heard the shrill tone, ubiquitous cell phone warning alert. Storm surge, meaning waters will rise, likely rush yilinland, pog a deadly threat. Irmas fury, aweinspiring and terrifying, battering turks and caicos. Im scared as hell about my house. Its a race against time now in south florida and beyond. I get the ceiling with hundreds of thousands of residents ordered out. The storm now wider than the florida peninsula. Forecasters saying it could pave a path of destruction the length and width of the state. Every florida family must prepare to evacuate, regardless of the coast youre on. Those already on the move packing highways. Google map shows the state of urgency in right red, indicating heavy traffic headed north. Lines for gas, bumper to bumper. But at many gas stations, the pumps have gone dry. Fuel trucks now getting Police Escorts through the traffic to replenish the supply. For those waiting, the fear is real. This is huge. Its really huge. And the surges by the beach, you know, the water is going to come up really high, you know. You get trapped in your homes. Its really scary. Images from the caribbean in the wake of irma tell a story of paradise lost. Islands like barbuda and st. Martin are decimated. President trump dealing with the nations second Natural Disaster in as many weeks. The white house releasing photos of an oval Office Briefing on irma. The Senate Voting on a 16 billion Hurricane Relief package, which includes hurricanes harvey and irma that now goes to the house. With the storms path uncertain, the air force is now relocated dozens of war planes from bases across the southeast. And residents in georgia and the carolinas are stocking up. As they wait to see which way irma will turn. Miami beach, where we are under a mandatory evacuation order. And matt and savannah, Police Officials here have said once the winds reach 39 Miles Per Hour, First Responders simply wont respond, because of the danger of getting their officers and firefighters out in those conditions. Lester, thank you very much. Thats why the evacuations are so important. As we mentioned, al is also in position in miami beach. And i know you have some new information about where the storm is headed. Al, good morning. Good morning, guys. And, again, this storm system is showing some fluctuation, but that does not mean it is any less dangerous. Lets go and show you exactly where its going, and what its doing. Currently, the hurricaneforce winds extend out 70 miles from the center of this system. But then you get those tropicalforce winds, and they can extend out 185 miles in diameter. So it is a huge, huge system. The latest on it, a category 4 storm, just barely underneath the 5 level. Its located 500 miles southeast of miami, florida. 155mileanhour winds moving westnorthwest at 16 Miles Per Hour. So heres the path. What we can expect. Tonight the bahamas go under the gun. Winds of 50 to 75 Miles Per Hour. Storm surge of 5 to 10 feet. Rainfall upwards of a foot. Then it starts to make the turn and head toward southern florida. So sometime late saturday night, sunday morning, were talking winds of between 150 and 175 Miles Per Hour as a category 4. 7 to 10foot storm surge. Rainfall, 8 to 16 inches. Then sunday evening, its in central florida. Strong winds still. A category 2 storm. A storm surge of 3 to 5 feet. Rainfall 8 to 16 inches. And as we make our way into the southeast tuesday morning, 40 to 70mileanhour winds. And isolated tornado threats all along this route. Now heres why were worried about this dual coast threat. Florida itself at its widest point in the peninsula is about 150 miles wide. Now, irma, its circumference, 650 miles. As it approaches, those easterly winds will bring the storm surge for southeastern florida. But as it makes its way to the north, well get that return flow, and were going to be seeing a storm surge along the southwestern coast, causing big problems there. So, guys, this is probably, if it takes this track, it will be the worstcase scenario. And, again, we may see an intensification just before landfall like we did with harvey, because there is a swath of very warm water just before florida. And that would give it all that extra energy that it needs to intensify. All right, al. Were going to be talking to you, obviously, a lot throughout the morning. Thank you very much. Of course, the problems tied to the evacuations in south florida are not limited to the roadways. Thousands of people are finding themselves stranded at the airports. Theyre trying to get seats on some of the last flights out of that region. And overnight, a policeinvolved shooting at miamis airport caused even more problems and more delays. Nbc national correspondent, miguel almaguer, is there. Miguel, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. Thousands are pouring into m. I. A. Every hour. The stranded trying to get to safety. Overnight, gunshots rang out, adding to tension after so many have already reached a boiling point. The mass exodus from south florida turned violent as gunfire rang out at Miami International. Police say a man with a knife somehow got on to the tarmac. When confronted by officers, he ran into a restricted area, tried to get on to the roof. An officer shot the suspect. Passengers ordered to evacuate a terminal amid the chaos. Nobody got hurt. Aside from the perpetrator in this incident. None of the workers that were downstairs or any of the passengers. Reporter a bizarre moment intensifying the anxiety at the airport, where a different kind of storm has already made landfall, thousands of flights cancelled before irmas arrival. I had already paid 900 for a roundtrip ticket that they cancelled and then theyre trying to ask me to pay another 900 ticket for one way. Reporter m. I. A. Tweeted, this massive crowded airport is not a shelter. Across the southern end of the state, Major Airlines are suspending service. Im get kikind of getting an right now, because i cant get out. I have a family to go back to so im just really worried right now. Reporter making matters worse, there is trouble at sea. The two busiest cruise ports in the world affected by the incoming storm. Some 40,000 passengers impacted by irma. Many now shipped back to miami with nowhere to go. I think this is unprecedented. Ive been here 60 years, okay . Ive never heard of this kind of evacuation. Maybe they should have been dropped off somewhere else. Reporter this morning, tens of thousands are feeling irmas wrath. Some cruise ships headed out to sea while others are returning to port. A massive storm wreaking havoc from out at sea to back on land. Just kind of anxious and worried about it. If youre going to get home. Were stuck somewhere in a shelter. Reporter with more than 4,600 flights cancelled because of irma, thousands are scrambling to find open seats or new flights that are leaving the florida area. But lines are getting longer and patience is getting shorter. Matt and savannah, back to you. Miguel, thank you very much. We are joined by phillip levine, mayor of miami beach. Good morning to you. Good morning. You have not minced words. You have called the coming storm a nuclear hurricane. And i know evacuations are your number one priority right now. How is that going . Is the city essentially empty . Its going very, very well. And i think i described it as a nuclear hurricane, because of its devastating effect its had on the caribbean islands on its way towards florida. The evacuation has gone very well. As of yesterday, youll see the streets of miami beach are very quiet. Theyre deserted. I was on ocean drive where i am right now, empty, completely empty. Now, of course, were going to continue today. We need everybody who is watching or listening to this broadcast to know, we dont want heroes. We want safe residents. They should leave miami beach. Miami beach is a great city, mr. Mayor. You already know that. Youre also the home of a lot of Senior Citizens. Did that population pose any specific challenges in terms of getting those people to safer ground . Were very close. We know where our seniors live. We have a homeless population, as well as special needs. We took early steps to make sure we identified all our seniors and make sure they have the ability to evacuate the island. We have buses, we have trolleys, we have shelters in the mainland for them to go. And thats gone very well so far. You must have a todo list that is pages and pages long. Setting evacuations aside, because i know thats number one. What are the other primary concerns you have right now . Well, i think the two primary concerns we have, number one, that people heed the warning and leave miami beach. And number two, of course, is the potential devastating effects from this storm. I mean, the sea water, huge storm water surge is a big concern we have. And number two, the devastating potential effects of the wind. We have done everything we could do to this point. Putting in portable pumps, portable generators. As you know, we have already raised roads. Listen, its no match for a hurricane, let alone a hurricane of this historical magnitude. When you talk about history, 1926, the great miami hurricane, thats the last time miami beach took a direct hit. The new york times, i dont know if you saw this, they did kind of a comparison of what the ocean front area of miami beach looked like then versus now. And tried to calculate what the damage could be from a storm like this. Do you even have numbers in your mind . We dont actually have real numbers right now. But, of course, we understand that this is a very serious hurricane. The number one priority now are the lives, the safety, of the residents and visitors here. Well deal with the potential impact, economically and the physical destruction post hurricane. All right. Miami beach mayor, phillip levine. We know its a busy morning. Thank you, sir. Were pulling for you, mr. Mayor. Thank you very much. So regardless of exactly where irma hits, south florida is going to face high winds and a huge storm surge. Dylan has more on that. Good morning to you. Good morning, guys. Lets start with the storm surge, which can be one of the most dangerous aspects to a hurricane. Its basically a rapid rise in water levels. Sometimes several feet in just a few minutes. And its all caused by the push of that water on shore as the hurricane moves over the ocean. Imagine taking a squeegee and dragging the top layer of the ocean on shore. Now, miami is basically sitting at sea level. They could flood at high tide on a sunny day. So with the froforecast of 5 to feet, that could cause devastating flooding. Its not just the flooding, but winds. Especially the highrises in the miami area. So winds change speed with height. So, for example, 100mileanhour winds at the surface translates to 130mileanhour winds at the top of a highrise n. Now, the windows built after hurricane andrew are designed to withstand 175mileanhour winds. But you have to keep the windows shut. As the winds rush down the building, they create this intense vacuum effect that can suck things out. So if the windows are not shut properly, it can cause significant damage inside. And also speaking of winds, there are more than two dozen cranes scattered around miami. The cranes counter balances can weigh up to 30,000 pounds so they did not have time to remove the cranes before irmas arrival. So people that live near those cranes are being urged to evacuate, just because theyre expected to just spin. Theyre going to let them loose and just spin in the storm once the winds hit. And theres no saying just how long they can spin for. So irma is different than harvey in that the storm surge and winds will be a much bigger threat than the days of flooding rain that we saw with harvey. Dylan, you mentioned the cranes. We all remember Hurricane Sandy here in new york. Just a few blocks from us, there was a crane on top of a building and that thing came tumbling down and dangled for a while. They had to evacuate the streets below. I think it was over 59th street. So, yeah, we know the dangers that cranes can pose. There was a miami construction official saying, if you live next to a crane, i cant tell you its safe to be in a building nearby. So just yet another thing to worry about. Were going to have a lot more on this storm throughout the morning. But now we want to move to this breaking news we mentioned at the top of the show. Mexicos most powerful earthquake in a century hitting off the countrys Southern Coast overnight. It sparked a tsunami warning, and this morning deaths and damage are being reported. Nbcs Anne Thompson has the latest for us. Anne, good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah. Were learning more about that massive earthquake in mexico that killed at least six people, including three children. This morning, hundreds of thousands of people are without power as daylight reveals the true extent of the damage. Overnight, devastation in mexico. As a deadly earthquake struck off the Southern Coast. Triggering a tsunami with waves of more than 3 feet in some areas. Ive been through more than 20 earthquakes, and ive never felt an earthquake as strong as this one. Reporter blaring alarms sent residents fleeing into the streets after the quake toppled houses and caused buildings to sway violently. This woman says you could hear the building creek. The lights were out. It scared me, because i have never lived through anything like that. According to the u. S. Geological survey, the quake had a magnitude of 8. 1 and hit off the coast of chiapas. It was felt in depuguatemala. In 1985, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed buildings and killed thousands. Right now officials are validating the aftermath as the extent of the damage is still being revealed. This morning, authorities are warning a tsunami wave that could top 9 feet along the coast. And the president of mexico says the National Emergency committee will be coordinating care for all of those affected by this earthquake. Matt and savannah . All right, Anne Thompson, thank you. It is wider than our entire state and could cause major and life threatening impacts from coast to coast. Today National Investigative correspondent, jeff rossen is there. Hes in a helicopter right now, high above miami, actually. Jeff, good morning. Reporter hey, guys, good morning to you. Look, we talk about surviving the storm, which is, of course, incredibly important, but this morning i want to talk about surviving the evacuation, because when you have so many people leaving at once, weve seen those pictures of massive traffic jams, it can be incredibly challenging. We came up at a chopper here over miami this morning to give you a birds eye view. I want to take you do a live picture outside. What are you seeing . Youre seeing something that our chopper pilot says in incredibly eerie and you never see here in miami. It is a ghost town down there. Barely anybody on the roads. And heres why. Ive been talking to a lot of people here in miami over the past 24 hours who are telling me they are staying home from work today. They are not coming into miami. Boarding up their homes. Packing up and today is decision day. Today is the day that a lot of people are going to get out of here before the storm, before they get stuck. So you can expect big traffic jams later tonight. This morning we are about to show you how to evacuate fast and safe. As Hurricane Irma bears down, officials in florida are sounding the alarm. Ordering mass evacuations. You are told to evacuate, get out, quickly. Reporter but thats easier said than done. Take a look at this. Long lines at just about every gas station. In some cases, hours long. A nightmare. Reporter a nightmare. Ive been in lines for an hour and a half. By the time i get there, i get nothing. Reporter you cant go anywhere. Because you have no gas. I have to stay home. Reporter there is a line of cars at this gas station that wrapped blocks and blocks. But they just ran out of gas here. Its happening across so many gas stations here in florida today. So now all of the cars, all of those people who are waiting and waiting and waiting, now have to go back in line at another gas station. Then theres the traffic. Highways packed with cars trying to get out. The evacuation itself can be dangerous. During hurricane rita in 2005, at least 100 people died. Not during the storm, but during the evacuation. Many running out of gas and dying of heat exhaustion. So if youre evacuating and stuck in gridlock traffic, heres the question. Do you run the engine and the air conditioning . Or do you conserve fuel . Experts say your best bet is to run the car and you can run a little ac for about ten minutes every hour. And it doesnt have to be the same ten minutes all together. You can scatter it. And experts say that should be enough to keep you cool, but also keep your car running longer. But before you even leave your home, your evacuation checklist begins. The king family lives in key biscayne, packing up now and leaving today. Suitcase. Got it. Reporter but thats not enough. Experts say you need a go bag stuffed with a few everyday items you may never think. Do you have one of these . A first aid kit. You know what, no, we dont. And you always need those, especially after the storm. Reporter bottled water. Have you packed bottled water . Yes. Reporter good. Portable flashlights. And some come with extra batteries. More flashlights. Granola bars. Definitely. Reporter heres Something Else that may not be as obvious. Your medications. Youre going to grab your medications, because you dont know how long youre going to be gone. Right. Reporter get cash out of the atm machines today while theyre still working, because if electricity goes out, the bank atms may not work, credit card machines wont work in the stores, and youre going to need cash to buy the essentials. Absolutely right. Reporter go to the atm, take out some cash. And your important documents. You dont think about those either. Your will, birth certificates, get it into a waterproof bag and bring it with you. Dont keep it in the house. No, its hard, because you dont know if the house is going to be there when you come back. Reporter and weiby the way, were giving this all to you. Its yours. All right, thank you reporter as the traffic builds and gas dries up. All right. So we have a couple other tips for you, as well. What you want to do is, go to the store today and get one of these. Its a mobile phone charger. And by the way, i got this here in miami. There are still some available in stores. Just in case all the electricity goes out, you can communicate. And there is Something Else. If all the cell towers go out, theres a Smartphone App and its free, guys. Its called zello. And a lot of people used it during Hurricane Harvey. It acts as a walkietalkie so you can get in touch with people in the area. People were actually rescued in harvey from this ahead of irma. Back in 2014, craig, you said that if florida or miami were to take a direct hit from a hurricane the size of katrina or sandy, it wont survive. Youve seen the track, you know the size of this storm. What are your fears . Well, hopefully everybody is evacuating. And, again, they can go shorter distances. They dont have to leave the area, but they need to get out of the storm surge areas. But those highrises and construction, were going to see a tremendous amount of damage based upon this forecasted track. Craig, will you explain to us right now, whats going on with fema . Take us into the war room. Describe what the operations are like right now. Theyre moving and trying to prestage everything they can to get ready for the initial response back end, supporting florida scott and the team here in florida, the Florida National guard and First Responders. But the challenge is going to be, floridas peninsula. So as much as people are having trouble going north, its going to be just about as difficult heading south. Particularly as damage starts in the southern part of the state. But that forecast track has a hurricane going right up the middle of the state. So those highways are going to have a hurricane on it before you can even get to the people that are being hit by the storm in the beginning. So prestaging, getting things set. But the other thing theyre having to factor in is how much is this storm going to slow down or prevent Immediate Response based upon where its at on these highways. But, boy, ive got to tell you, it is rough. It is going to be a rough change, and a big change along that horizon. All right, lets look at the comparison of andrew to irma. And it is kind of interesting. Category 5 storm andrew back in august, 165mileanhour maximum winds. The radius for this was 45 miles from the 74plusmileanhour winds. The time over florida, four hours. Now contrast that with irma. And as craig fugate mentioned, the track of this comes straight up the spine of florida. And so the time over florida could be 24 hours or more. Maximum winds so far have been 185mileanhour. The storm diameter, a third larger than it was for andrew. So right now irma, category 4 storm, but it could intensify again. We could be seeing reintensification of the eye wall. 500 miles southeast of miami, florida. 150mileanhour winds moving westnorthwest at 16 Miles Per Hour. We have hurricane warnings up for the entire coast. Were also looking at storm surge threats from 5 to 10 feet throughout much of the southern half of frida. Thatlos im first alert meteorologist erika martin. We have a nice stretch of weather in the forecast. Temperatures for today topping out in the mid70s, a mix of sun and clouds. We have been talking about evacuations taking place from south florida all the way into parts of georgia. But what about those who cant leave . Yeah, nearly 3,000 animals at zoo miami are also in the path of that storm. And this morning, final preparations are under way to keep them safe. Nbcs Kerry Sanders is there. Hey, kerry, good morning. Reporter well, good morning. You know, in 1992, hurricane andrew came through here, zoo miami was leveled. As you noted, 3,000plus animals here, hundreds of species. Among them you can see right here, the caribbean flamingos which later today will be moved to a protective location in a building. Some of the animals like the african antelope will ride the storm outdoors. Behavioral specialists say sometimes animals can sense that there is a coming change in the weather. But so far, they say, nobody is showing any signs of being skittish. As millions flee from Hurricane Irma, what about those who cant fly away . At zoo miami, thousands of animals are in the eye of the storm. Most zoos dont go through hurricanes the way we have. This zoo has been through hurricane andrew, hurricane wilma, hurricane katrina. Reporter these pink flamingos flocked to the mens restroom during hurricane andrew which blew through in 92. People arent the only homeless victims of the hurricane. Reporter and not the only ones without fresh water. We had things totally destroyed around here. Yet the animals pretty much survived unscathed. Reporter today these pink flamingos are back in the bulls eye, but this time theyll ride out irma in a new concrete enclosure. Here you go. Reporter ron is helping ready zoo miamis almost 3,000 animals, including rhino toshi. We first met ron back after andrew leveled this zoo. Its all right, its all right. Theyre still very nervous from the storm. Reporter and thats toshi. I took a photo immediately following hurricane andrew with toshi standing in the middle of the pen with a trailer upside down that had fallen out of the sky next to him. And yet toshi didnt have a scratch on him. Reporter this time, theyre catching these birds, clipping their wings and bringing them inside. While the bigger animals like these lions will stay where they normally sleep. Something they feel secure in. These night houses are made out of poured concrete, welded metal. Everything around them could be destroyed. These night houses remain intact. Reporter but still, hes worried what may happen to these animals if the zoo takes a direct hit. Animals do have an instinct of how to survive, hunker down in these storms. Reporter see just beyond the pink flamingos those white birds . Theyre called ibis, native. And local legend has it that the ibis is the last animal, the last bird to leave when there is an approaching hurricane, and the first to come back. So maybe its an indication to residents that you still have time to get out. Guys . Kerry, its interesting. You showed some video of hurricane andrew, and we were talking about how many hurricanes you yourself have covered in your expertise. And we counted about 60. Reporter its phenomenal, but, yes. Witnesses said people ran into the streets and panicked. A lot of them still in their pajamas. More than 1 million utility customers lost power. It is the focus of a Ground Breaking new study and Maria Shriver has more on that. Thats true. We all have loved ones who suffer through terrible ailments like cancer, diabetes and Heart Disease. Now a new study will see whether a common medication medication y slow their onset and radically change how we treat aging. Imagine a single pill that could stop some of the most debilitating diseases of older age. Top aging researcher, dr. Barzali, hopes its possible with met for minute. What we are after is the ability of met formen to delay agerelated disease. Reporter its taken by adults with type two diabetes to lower their blood sugar. Now the doctor is about to launch a new nationwide study of 3,000 healthy seniors to see if taking metformin can delay and even prevent agerelated diseases like cancer, Heart Disease and alzheimers. And dramatically cut health care costs. If we delay agerelated disease by two or three years, its calculated the longevity dividend is 7 trillion by the year 2050. Reporter in dozens of studies of type two diabetics, metformin has been associated with lower rates of these diseases and longer life. Its fda approved as safe and its cheap. Only 5 cents a pill. It is to me a miracle drug. Reporter 59yearold Michael Cantor started taking metformin as a prediabetic. Once his blood sugar stabilized, he asked a doctor to keep prescribing it, helping him stay active and healthy in older age. I see what happens to people especially in their early to mid 70s and on into their 80s where their quality of life really becomes crippled. And my gosh, for every year i could maintain the kind of quality of life i have now, that would really be amazing. Reporter metformin works by lowering your absorption of glucose from food, a proven method of slowing down aging. But the drug can have side effects like nausea, dizziness and muscle pain. And while experts welcome the new study, some warn its too soon for Healthy People to start taking metformin. Hold off. Because whenever we take a medicine, we have to look at the cost benefit ratio. It does have side effects. For healthy aging, we dont know if there is any benefit yet. Reporter the doctor agrees, but says if his metformin study is successful, it could be revolutionary, causing the fda to classify aging not as a fact of life, but as a disease to be treated. Giving Drug Companies the green light to develop longevity drugs that would be covered by insurance. So you think the pharmaceutical companies will only look at aging, if its classified, by the fda as a disease. Exactly. Aging is the major risk factor for agerelated diseases. I want to target aging in order to prevent the disease. Thats a really revolutionary idea. 10,000 people turning 65 every day. So tremendous amount of interest in this drug and how we age. And with these other effects. Exactly. So people are really excited about its impact on Cognitive Health and overall health. We want to age, but we want to age healthy. Fascinating. So make this sausage, we accompany them with provolone cheese and relish. To get started, we have some red onions that are small diced. And ellie, well throw some red peppers in there.
