President trump is spending the weekend at camp david meeting with congressional leaders to talk about what they hope to achieve this year. The meeting comes just one day after a controversial new book about his administration was released. Its a book the president says is full of lies. And hes attacking the author of the book once again overnight. Nbc White House CorrespondentKelly Odonnell is in the Briefing Room this morning. Good morning. Reporter good morning, sheinelle. It is so cold outside were inside this morning. And maybe theres some good heat going at camp david where the president is meeting with top lawmakers and several cabinet officials. One thing we know for sure, he did not leave behind his frustration over a former top aides cooperation with the new book. He tweeted late in the night calling steve bannon a total loser and claiming that he cried when he got fired and begged for his job. When the president left the white house friday were going to camp david. We have a lot of things to work on. He gave the Cold Shoulder to reporters. He had already unleashed the heat on twitter about former chief strategist now derided as the leaker, sloppy steve bannon who cooperated with the headline grabbing new book fire and fury released four days early after the president s lawyer tried to block it. President trump insisted he gave author Michael Wolff zero access. I never spoke to him for book. But wolff told savannah exclusively. I absolutely spoke to the president. Whether he reliealized it was a interview i do not. But not secretary of state Rex Tillerson who said that assertion does not apply it him. Ive never questioned his mental fitness. I have no reason to question his mental fitness. Its outrageous to make these type of accusations and its simply untrue. Reporter former Trump Campaign aide defended the president as capable but difficult. He does not have any mental problems. He can be difficult to work for. Hes a celebrity. Reporter but he also admitted he probably called the president a, quote, fool as described in the book. I probably did say that. Hes called me worse. Reporter and while theres so much controversy about whats in this book, white house officials are trying to draw attention to some things theyre working on. Overnight they released some photos of the meetings at camp david and senior democrats say the president proposed a request for 18 billion to fund his immigration border wall in exchange for trying to smooth the way for some young immigrants who were brought here illegally trying to focus on what theyre planning and a little bit less about the book. Craig, sheinelle. Its not just the Trump Administration under the spotlight this morning. We are learning more about an fbi investigation into the Clinton Foundation. Two investigators asked the Justice Department and the fbi to look into the man behind the controversial and unsubstantiated report about the report and his ties to russia. We get more on that from nbcs jeff bennett in washington. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, craig. As you ksaid two major developments are raising the stakes over an fbi investigation. Senators investigating russias interference in the 2016 president ial election are turning the tables calling for a criminal investigation of christopher steel, the former british spy behind the now infamous socalled trump dossier. The damming and disputed dossier contains explosive allegations about President Trumps purported links to russia. In a letter to the department of justice and fbi, senators Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham say steel may have misled federal investigators about his communications with the media about the dossier. Democrats are dismissing it as a distraction from the ongoing russia probe. I have seen no evidence none whatsoever that would justify this criminal referral. It seems more like an effort to distract from the real priorities what should be the priorities of the committee. Reporter adding to democrats outrage, a revelation that the fbi has renewed an investigation into the Clinton Foundation. At issue whether Clinton Foundation donors received favorable treatment from the department of state when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. President trumps openly called for clinton to be investigated. Branding his former rival crooked hillary and tweeting where is our Justice Department in a clinton spokesman calling the investigation a sham adding the goal is to distract from the indictments guilty pleas and accusations of treason from trumps own people at the expense of our Justice Department integrity. Reporter its not clear whether theres new evidence involved or whether President Trumps rhetoric prompted the fbi to reopen its probe of the Clinton Foundation. Lets bring in phillip rucker. Phil, good morning. Good morning. Lets start with the book. One of the more troubling allegations in Michael Wolffs book is that the president is mentally unfit for office. When he talked to savannah yesterday, he said that according to steve bannon hes totally lost it. Youve got a lot of sources inside this administration. Does this jive with what youve heard as well . Well, the books author paints a full portrait of what weve heard in sort of whispers and bits and pieces over the last year in washington. We had senator bob corker from tennessee question the president s competence and fitness for the job. The book is really a devastating portrayal bringing it all together and raising alarms about the president s mental capacity. Lets talk about steve bannon. Not only is he under attack but hes lost an important financial backer, the mer cer family. Is he done in washington or wounded. I would say hes severely wounded. I dont think anybodys ever done in trump world. But steve bannon losing the mer se family support, that is significant. They were his bankrollers, his financial backers. He was hoping to use their resources to really become a powerful figure in shaping the midterm elections this year. Congressional republicans are on the attack once again going after some of their favorite targets, the clintons, the Clinton Foundation. Youve got senator graham, senator grass re going after the guy behind this controversial dossier recommending to the Justice Department that they file charges against christopher steel. Whats this real about, phillip . Well, i think theyre both Significant Developments and in part theyre in response to the pressure that President Trump has been exerting over the last several months to try to investigate the clintons, investigate the dossier, investigate all these other things that are separate from the russia probe under way with Robert Mueller into whether the Trump Campaign had any coordination or collusion with russian officials to impact the election last year. Before you leave i want to ask you about the economy. President trump is all about the economy. He tweets about the record high stock market, the low unemployment rate. 2017 saw the weakest job creation since 2010. Is his economic success story, is it all smoke and mirrors or is it really . Well, there is some really economic success over the last year. Its also important to note that the economy didnt change completely when trump got elected. Weve had a slow and steady recovery over several years. A lot of job growth and other successes in the late years of the Obama Administration that trump inherited and built upon. All right. Phillip, thank you for your time. Another headline, two planes collided at torontos International Airport overnight. Forcing passengers to evacuate via the emergency slides in freezing cold conditions. One plane with 174 people on board was waiting to go to a gate when it was struck by another jet being towed away from its gate. Flames, rupt flames erupted on the wing. Luckily no one was hurt.
