That. Thats now how the legal system well i have to the father of three of dr. Larry nassars victims tries to attack him. This morning, his apology and gutwrenching explanation for why he lost it. All that and the man that pushed the button that warned hawaii want under Ballistic Missile attack speaks out. I was 100 sure it was the right decision. That it was real. I was convinced it was real. In a shocker lady gaga cancels the rest of her world tour. And Super Saturday in minneapolis where anticipation is building 36 hours away from kickoff. The patriots and eagles ready to go headtohead for super bo lo commercials and craig is flying high. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with Sheinelle Jones and craig melvin and dylan dreyer. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. I love the music. Welcome to today. Im Sheinelle Jones. You see craig is in chilly minneapolis. Craig, what is the bigger story . The game or the cold . I heard it feels like 4 degrees. It feels like 4. I have to be honest with you. We gotten used to the game he cold here. We will take a look at the two teams. We have special guests joining us this morning. And it is good to see that you decided not to hide your bias, Sheinelle Jones. It was an accident. I dont know what you are talking about. Oh, yeah. I bet it was. We will have more from you, craig, coming up. For now, lets get to the top story. The fallout from the controversial memo exposing fbi surveillance practices in the russia investigation. Many republicans say it shows bias. Democrats calling the memo a sham and outrage. We have nbcs correspondent Kelly Odonnell near the president s home in florida. Reporter now the memo is out, the battle of shaping the view of the fbi and the president. Republicans have evidence of Law Enforcement bias. Democrats counter the information is unfair and incomplete. The big unknown, will the president take any action. New promises this weekend that Top Justice Department official Rod Rosenstein will not hear the president say youre fired. Three white house officials tell nbc news there have been no considerations or discussions about removing rosenstein who oversees special counsel Robert Muellers russia probe. President trump was not so clear. Do you have confidence . You figure that one out. Reporter rosenstein is among the senior Justice Department and fbi officials named in the controversial memo declassified by the president friday. A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves and worse than th by house Intelligence Committee, republicans allege the officials abuse power to obtain secret surveillance of a Campaign Aide carter page, of they suspect of being a russian spy. Gop lawmakers say officials used evidence, the dossier. They took the dossier and dressed it up lik intelligence. Not telling the court it was paid for by the clinton campaign. Reporter the Court Approved continued surveillance because the spying produced legitimate information. Nbc news learned that four ju o reviewed requests before approving additional snooping. Reaction was viseral. John mccain labelled it an attack on the fbi that served putins interests. Fired fbi director james comey said thats it . Calling it dishonest and misleading. Trumps fbi director chris wray saying it was of grave concern and delivered a message of encouragement to fbi employees. Talk is cheap. The work you do is what will endure. Im determined to defend integrity and professionalism every day. Democrats accuse the president and allies of cherry picking information in a bid to undercut the special counsel. This is a charade. Reporter speaking out for the first time is devin nunes, the house chairman, denying coordination with the white house. How about with trumps lawyers . No. Reporter democrats want their own summary released publicly. Nunes blocked that this week, but says it is still possible. Hard to say. I dont know yet. I have only read through it once. We have to go through and s aga. Reporter the white house says it is willing to work with the committee to declassify the memo written by democrats. That will take time meaning republicans get a big head start telling their narrative of what happened. The committee is also prepared to move on to what they call phase two investigating the state department and any role it may have played in the russia investigation. Sheinelle. Kelly, thank you. Matthew miller was the spokesperson for the judgstice department from 2011 and 2015. Gentlemen, good morning. Good morning. Matt, lets start with you. Republican house members say this is proof of bias in the upper ranks of the fbi. Does this memo prove that and if not, what does this memo tell you . It doesnt prove that. The case that republicans clearly want to make with this memo is that the investigation started under acloud. Cloud. The court was not aware of the bias. The memo by omits the key facts doesnt prove the case. It does state that the investigation started with bias and into the investigation of carter page, but the investigation actually started months earlier when the fbi found evidence from intelligence sources se that George Papadopoulos was collaborating with russian officials in a way that brought him and brought the campaign under suspicion. I dont think that is what the republicans were trying to prove. I think the big question Going Forward is what does this mean for the Mueller Investigation . From the substantive point of view, i dont think it means much. From the political point of view, does this give the president the political space to move on mueller and rosenstein in the way he wants. Matt, quickly. Another piece as kelly mentioned. The gop memo was released over the objections of the fbi. We are learning a top fbi agent is resigning over what he says are relentless attacks on the bureau. How damaging is the memo in the Law Enforcement and Intelligence Community . It is damaging to the morale to see the president overrule the fbi director when the fbi director said the memo would be damaging. Two, it is damaging to the effectiveness of Law Enforcement who will have people all over the country that dont trust Law Enforcement is doing work free of political bias. Three, it is damaging to the willingness of intelligence sources to cooperate with u. S. Officials and Law Enforcement. If you are a Foreign Service agent or are whistleblower and you are looking to come forward and look at the treatment of ste steele, it would give you pause. The prevailing thought in washington is the memo is created to give the president cover to remove Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein who oversees the russian investigation. Or possibly robert mueller. Did the memo provide that cover . I dont know that thede eugh cover for the president to actually fire mueller which we know from reporting he has been wanting to do for some time or fire the Deputy Attorney general who heremoved. There is no question the memo was politically motivated. It is something the president has been aware of and encouraging of. The president wanted the memo released before he read it. Finally, phil, democrats calling on devin nunes to step down from the chairmanship. Ryan dismissed those calls says the democrats are playing politics. Who is winning the messaging war . Democrats or republicans . At the moment, we see the republican memo. We have to wait and see what the democratic side has to say about these findings. It is important to see paul in support of the memo coming out and working with the republicans on the committee. Matthew and philip, thank you. The other big story we are following is the super bowl. Craig is in minneapolis with more on that. Craig. Good to see you, my friend. Sheinelle, hey there. It is finally here. Super bowl eve. The excitement here in minneapolis cannot get more intense. Fans have been pouring into the super bowl city with all eyes on tomorrows big game. The eagles. The patriots. Battling for footballs ultimate prize and nbcs ron mott is here outside u. S. Bank stadium with more. Ron, good to see you, buddy. Craig, good morning. Tom brady said the fans of 30 teams that did not make the super bowl tomorrow night are going to be cheering for the eagles. He is probably right. Such is life at the top in the nfl. Reporter if youve got it, flaunt it. With 283 sparkling diamonds, a reminder of coming over a 233 last year, patriots are looking for another ring. Im out there trying to win for as long as im playing the game. Reporter tom brady, the a ageless wonder at 40, looks for a secondhand to become the fourth player to win six super bowls. His coach has more than any other head coach. But will the eagles and tough defense stand in the way . For us, we will have a plan going into it. We will see stuff we have never seen. We will get back to the sideline and make quick adjustments and stay ahead of the curve. Reporter if you want to see the game in person, you need a big bank account. The cheapest seats are 3,000 on stubhub. And when the players take a break, Justin Timberlake takes halftime. He may have sparked a new controversy with his toddler son. He will never play firm ootb. Reporter one other past time . Gambling. You can wager on who will win the coin toss to whether belichick will wear his trademark hoodie or if brady has his stand stitched up. And the clubs met in 2005 in super bowl xxxv. The patriots got the day with the win. I will be careful about mentioning that to eagles fans. Keep the talons in. Craig. Thank you, ron mott. Drew brees knows a thing about getting ready for the game. He was in the super bowl in 2010 when the saints beat the colts. He is a paid spokesperson for microsoft. Good to have you here. Good to be here. 2010, you took them to the promise land. You know what it is like to get ready for a game like this. What would you advise the pats or the eagles to get ready for the game . I dont need to advise the pats. They have been here three of the last four years. They know how to handle it well. The eagles have traveled an interesting road. I think they were the team to beat throughout the year. And carson wentz goes down. Nick foles has done a tremendous job. It is all about the team and the way they rallied around the quarterback position and played that underdog mentality too. Very rarely does a one seed play at home for both playoff games and afc championship game. Now they are coming into the game with the same underdog mentali mentality. That can carry you a long way. If you are a betting man, which you are not, who would you bet on . Im not making predictions. If there is a way neither team could win, im still angry about not getting in. No, you know, i think new england, you would say has advantage from the stand point of the experience and all of the guys have not been in the game and understanding the process by which you get to this point. Then the start of the game is always interesting because it seems like it is a heavyweight fight where both sides are feeling each other out. I think the team that can start fast certainly has an advantage. We heard from Justin Timberlake in the spot saying his kid will never play football. Your kids play. Do you have reservations about tackle football . When they are old enough, i think it is fine if that is what they want to do. I will not push them toward that. I want them to be their own men. I think there is an appropriate aimi age when you look at studies and Brain Development and which stage it is an prop use t it s appropriate. I think it is middle school. I think it is every parents preference. I love the game of football. It teaches so many great life lessons. It is americas greatest game for that reason. Im still playing it. Ive been playing it my whole life. It was my childhood dream. I love the game of football, but there is an appropriate age before you put the pads on. Thanks for stopping by. 39 years old. How many more seasons . We take it one at a time. And reminder. Perhaps you heard. Nbc is the home for the super bowl. You can see the big game and plenty of pregame coverage tomorrow all day on nbc. Sheinelle, back to you. Good interview. Thank you, craig. We will check in with you in a bit. Here are other headlines we are following for you. For the first time, we are hearing from the man who sent out a false alert warning that hawaii was coming under Ballistic Missile attack. The man who does not want to be identified told nbc news he truly thought the attack was real and never heard the words exercise, exercise, exercise, before the drill began. I heard this is not a drill. I did not hear exercise. Im not to blame in this. It was the system failure. And i did what i was trained to do. For more than a half hour last month, hawaiians thought they were under attack. Investigators say five other workers did hear the warning. The man who sent the false alarm was fired. Dramatic moment in court on friday where the father of three daughters who were victims of dr. Larry nassar tried to attack him. A warning the words in the story are offensive. Here is blake mccoy. Reporter a father is apologizing for charging at the man who pleaded guilty of sexually abusing his three daughters. Let me at the son of a bitch. Reporter asking for five minutes alone with dr. Larry nassar. Would you give me one minute . You know i cant do that. Well i have to reporter a dramatic courtroom moment playing out. After he listened to two of his daughters read witness statements like so many others outlining distress after sexually abused by the usa Gymnastics Team doctor. Ill never been able to trust another man ever again. I constantly find myself names y nausious every time i relive that day. Im embarrassed. Im not here to upstage my daughters. I am here to help them heal. I can see creating an anger and rage so great any parent would want physical harm. Reporter the good add mjudg admonished his behavior. This is a strong family. We will get through it. Reporter his daughters defended him saying they had not let them read their witness statements ahead of time. It was hard for my dad to hear for the first time today what we speciexperienced. Reporter a burst of rage shrouding guilt and pain. Blake mccoy, nbc news. We have our friend here in for dylan dreyer. What is the weather . If you are headed to minneapolis, 6 30 p. M. Temperature outside with 5 degrees and the windchill at 10 degrees below zero. That doesnt matter. Inside it is Climate Control with the temperature of 70 degrees and calm winds. Lets look at the rest of the country and see what is happening. Big story. But first this is today on nbc. We are back on a saturday morning with the download. Our look back at the week that was. Our eyes on minneapolis for the big game. A lot of other news stories with we covered. The headlines dominated by the memo and the horrific train crash with republican lawmakers on board. The big story was President Trumps first state of the union address. Polarizing politics. Republicans thrilled. Democrats fuming as President Donald Trump delivered the first state of the union. Few surprises and few mistakes from the president on script and on message. The state of our union is strong because our people are strong. Terrifying moments on the rails for republican members of congress. It happened in one lightning fast horrific moment. Mass casualty incident. Level one train versus truck. Amtrak train carrying republican members of congress and staff and families to a retreat in West Virginia slicing through a garbage truck on the tracks just west of charlottesville, virginia. 28yearold Christopher Foley died at the scene. Another person in the truck in critical condition. And emotional moment in studio 1a when simone biles stopped by to talk to hoda to discuss the abuse by larry nassar. I think it is hard for someone to go through what i have gone through recently and it is very hard to talk about. I think the judge is my hero just because she gave it to him straight. He cant hurt you anymore. No, he cannot. He cant. Some of the weeks memorable moments caught on camera. A wild surprise for a cyclist in australia. The cyclist in front of the pack goes down hard and you see a kangaroo fly into the air, get up and hop away. See that . The animal appeared to be okay. The woman a dramatic rescue on the slopes. A broken chair lift leaves more than 100 skiers dangling in the austrian alps. And dangerously close during military maneuvers. The pentagon released the footage of the russian jet coming within five feet of the military plane over the black sea. A big surprise for two sisters delivered in a very sweet way. Used a cookie cake to let her kids know she was pregnant. The letter on one of the cakes read big sister. The other read big sister again. Reaction was priceless. Whatoes it say . Busineig sister. What does it mean . You are going to be a big sister. Its true. Are you pregnant . I am. That was sweet. Creative way to do that. All right. Still to come, why did lady gaga just cancel
