Florida School shooting. But the nra is distancing itself from the president s proposals. Nbc chief
White House Correspondent
Hallie Jackson joins us again with more details. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Here on capitol hill lawmakers are starting to get back to work today, under pressure to do something. And so is the president , after last weeks
Parkland School shooting. Today, hes going to meet with governors from all across the country, some of whom arent seeing eyetoeye with him on that controversial proposal to arm some teachers. That sets up what could be a confrontation at the white house. Ahead of a meeting with governors, a message from
President Trump on
School Safety. I think well make that first on our list because we have to end our country of whats happening with respect to that subject. Reporter but now, the nra is reiterating it does not back a president ial proposal on gun reform, to increase the age to legally buy semiautomatic weapons from 18 to 21. You do not want to raise the age . Thats correct. Reporter some republicans agree. The vast majority of 18, 19, 20, 21yearolds, are lawabiding citizens that arent a threat to anyone. So, im skeptical about that. Reporter but the president seems steadfast. It doesnt seem to make sense that you have to wait until youre 21 years old to get a pistol. But to get a gun like this maniac used in the school, you get that at 18. Reporter the gun debate, a cultural and political flashpoint. Delta and united airlines, the latest companies to cut ties with the nra and end benefits to its members. She says its an idea that would need more discussion. Back to you. Hallie jackson, thank you. A political snub for california senator dianne feinstein. Fellow democrats failed to endorse her for the partys primary at the cannual convention. Onethird of voters backed feinstein. There was stronger support for her challenger, kevin de leon, but not enough for the endorsement, either. That means neither candidate will get the seal of approval or extra cash heading into the june primary. Now, in a new effort to help the growing number of teenagers in this country dealing with depression. There arent enough
Mental Health specialists to go around. Now, theres a new plan to add pediatricians to the front lines. Kate snow is here with that. Reporter a psychologist i interviewed recently said this generation of young people is on the verge of the most severe
Mental Health crisis in decades. Theres been a sharp increase in teens feeling lonely, anxious, depressed. Todays announcement is an allhaall allhands allhandsondeck approach. Pediatricians see kids the most. Some say its time for them to look for depression. These really point in that direction. Reporter as many as one in five teens experience depression at some point during adolescence, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. But
Research Shows right now, two out of three teens with depression go undiagnosed and fail to receive any kind of care. The new guide lines out today say every child age 12 and up should be screened for signs of depression during their annual checkup. Teens with a history of depression may need more frequent monitoring. Theyre going to give a detailed screener, which is more than i feel sad on a scale of one to five. It will be more detailed and ask for situational and informational stuff so we can be more specific in our diagnosis. Reporter its the first update to the guidelines in a decade, and comes after nikolas cruz opened fire at
Marjory Stoneman high school in florida. The family that took in cruz after his mother died, tell kerry sanders, cruz was depressed. We knew he was depressed. We didnt know he was this lost. Reporter part of what the
American Academy of pediatrics recommends is a safety plan for teen patients that have depression and have become actively suicidal or dangerous to others, including having an adult agree to help remove lethal means. The guidelines encourage pediatricians to talk with young patients alone and talk separately with parents or care givers. And experts say conversations at home are as important as ever. Dont be afraid to point out the things youve seen that are different and then say, these dont seem like your normal behaviors. Im concerned about you. Lets talk. Leave it openended. Validate you notice differences and let them come to you. Reporter the
American Academy of pediatrics encouraging pediatricians to get more training in how to assess and treat depression, to collaborate with
Mental Health resources in their community. Part of the idea around
Mental Health is to reduce the stigma, make sure the families feel comfortable. To make families being as comfortable to say they have strep throat. Kate, thank you.
