I tried to reach out to the principal. He did not return my phone call or email. I did get a hold of someone from the School District and say they sent me a link to a statement they had saying while they support the right for students to speak out and express concerns, they would rather they do so inside the school. Nicholas cruz refused to let the School District provide him with Mental Health services. That e refusal is allowed by federal law. Also today prosecutors planned to ask a judge for permission to get hair and dna samples during a court hearing, but that hearing was cancelled. And today the officer who arrested cruz was honored with a day of thanks. Broward county leaders and members of the community applauded the officer and thanked him for his service. Today was proclaimed leonard appreciation day. Students returned to the high School Coming up tomorrow. The gun debate in washington heats up. Erin coleman is is joining us live with what Lawmakers Said today. A lot of talk, but not a lot of progress on the senate floor today. One lawmaker after another stood up and blamed loopholes in gun laws that need to be fixed. The senators said those looph e loopholes allowed cruz to buy a semi automatic rifle. Its outrageous that so many guns are sold with no background checks whatsoever. Whether youre a felon, mentally ill, spousal abuser, outrageous. We should close those loopholes and close them now. On the other side of the aisle, republicans said cruz could have been stopped had Armed School Resource officers gone into the school. Congressman scalise, who was shot himself, talked about the importance of officers at that school. I think what angered my the most is there was sheriffs deputy, trained and armed at the school assigned to protect a school and then he hid out instead of protecting the students. I wouldnt be here now if it wasnt for Law Enforcement confronting the shooter in my case. Its really disappointing that somebody didnt go into the school that was there and armed to protect the kids. They were outside washington last summer. President trump met with republican lawmakers to talk about the gun issue. A bipartisan bill calling for stronger background checks is gaining momentum. But theres still a lot of disagreement among lawmakers when it comes to banning assault weapons. Gun control activists are voicing anger at florida lawmakers for not making enough changes in the wake of the massacre. The freshman building where the shooting took place remains closed. The prosecution read transcripts from reported phone calls with pawlowski to hammer home evidence of his use of burner phones and the assistant u. S. Attorney told the jury, quote, the apple rots from the core, end quote. He was the core of the city and he inspected the employees. Two people were able to escape through a window. They are now in stable condition and right now officials are looking for a cause. New details now in a triple shooting in. North philadelphia. One of the victims died. Surveillance video shows the moment a gunman walked up to two men yesterday morning and fired. A third victim was a woman who was a bistander in that area. The wind is shifting in from the east. Starting to pile up the water at the beaches. We have a full moon. That piles it up even more. We still have the strong wind colliding with the strong west wind. Then as the storm intensifies offshore, it could pull down enough cold air to bring the snow line down. But as that storm intensifies offshore, watch these gusts go up through the 20s and into the 30s and even into the 40s.
