But first, breaking news in new jersey. A Police Officer seriously injured in a Chain Reaction crash that littered a street for blocks. Good evening. Im diane macedo in for cindy hsu. A dozen people were hurt when a speeding vehicle went on a collision course at around 8 00 tonight. Cbs 2s Hazel Sanchez spoke with witnesses. Shes live in jersey city with more. Police are still here cleaning up what witnesses described as a crazy accident scene. A maroon minivan was speeding down ocean avenue behind me when it slammed in to that silver car you see being towed right now. That started a scary chain of events that left a dozen people hurt including a jersey city Police Officer who was struck by that silver car while standing on the sidewalk. Reporter witnesses say the driver of this maroon minivan was speeding on ocean avenue near myrtle avenue in jersey city when it hit this silver colored sedan and spun out of control. She witnessed the chaos from her front yard. Flying down. He hit another car. That car hit another car. And that car hit another car. Reporter police say the man pushed the silver car in to the driveway. The car struck and critically injured a jersey city Police Officer who was standing on the sidewalk. The Chain Reaction accident sent car parts flying in all directions. At king says the vans driver tried to run, but police say he was king says she was surprised no one was killed. I was shocked, my heart was pounding. I couldnt believe that happened. Kids were outside riding their bikes. It was a group of kids playing football where it happened. But they did not get hit. Did not get hit. Amen. At this point we dont know why the minivan driver was speeding. We do know all the people who were injured are in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. Hazel sanchez, cbs 2 news. It was an especially violent weekend in the city with at least 50 people shot. On friday the nypd reported three shootings citywide. Last night the number of shootings jumped to 18. Today theres been at least four separate shootings reported. Tonight cbs 2 and Community Activists are demanding answers from city hall. Matt kozar reports. One man was shot and killed here in East Flatbush and Community Leaders are demanding help from city hall and the police department. Reporter 25yearold donell smith was shot and killed at the glenwood houses in East Flatbush. As part of a stop the violence rally, his mother pleaded for justice. Im not going to let my sons death be in vain because they shot him down like he was a dog in the street and that im not standing for. Reporter nine people were shot at a house part on stanley avenue. Surveillance video shows the suspects firing blinding on a busy sidewalk. Pedestrians run for cover. The shootings were part of a violent summer weekend citywide with at least 50 shooting victims. Three people were killed. Local leaders say theyre experiencing more gun violence in their communities and say the mayor seems apathetic to their concerns. Wheres our mayor . Why are you not out here denouncing whats going on in our community . Reporter during the ecuadorean parade in queens today we asked the mayor twice for comment on this weekends violence but his aides pushed us away. What do you have to say about all the shooting . No questions, no more questions. Reporter the mayors press secretary told us in a statement, the mayor takes very seriously each incident and has directed nypd to beef up its presence in these areas. But Brooklyn Borough president eric adams says his Community Needs more help. There was a crisis of gun violence. The resources must be manpower as well as financial resources. The Police Commissioner says overall, crime is down 5 to 6 citywide. Reporting from East Flatbush, brooklyn, matt kozar, cbs 2 news. Firefighters in Brooklyn Made a dangerous rescue in brownsville today. Five children including a baby saved and all needing oxygen after getting trapped by the flames. Reporter firefighters say it was clear from the second they arrived to east 96th street and linden boulevard, they were dealing with heavy fire conditions. Then they noticed a bigger problem. A lot of smoke forced us out of the building. Reporter keith murray says at least some of those occupants were his wife and children. Everybody looking where the fire trucks are, set the whole building on fire. Reporter murray says when he arrived his wife was inside along with his five children. The smoke was coming out of the windows. Just grabbing everything we could grab to try to get out. We got to the second floor, we had fire coming out the door to the hallway over our heads. Made sure the people were safe and in place. The challenges didnt end there. [ inaudible ] reporter still firefighters managed to get everyone out safely, rushing murrays wife and children in to an ambulance and giving them oxygen. They came fast and got them out of there. It could have been worse. Thank god they came fast. The Fire Department says four people were taken to area injury. Murray says his kids suffered smoke inhalation but are expected to be okay. We have new information tonight on the legionnaires outbreak in the bronx. There are 71 reported cases, six more cases since last night. Four people have died from the all the victims were older adults and problems. A town hall meeting to provide more information is set for tomorrow night at the bronx museum of the arts. Police in tennessee say they identified a suspect in the deadly shooting of a memphis Police Officer. They say 33yearold officer sean bolton pulled over a car last night and in the process interrupted a drug deal. There was some sort of struggle and police say a passenger in the car, 29yearold tramaine will born shot bolton then took off. The third memphis Police Officer to be shot and killed in four years. Last night we lost not only an officer but a great man. A dedicated serve servant to our community and a family member. Willbourn is still on the run. The driver was released without being charged. A second american doctor is now accused of poaching a lion in the same area where cecil the lion was killed. Authorities say in april, jan seski, an oncologist who lived outside pittsburgh shot it with a bow and arrow. But they say the hunt was not allowed in that area and seski did not have approval. Meanwhile the african government wants to extradite dentist Walter Palmer for killing cecil. Now to long beach, long island where lifeguards say the surf was extremely dangerous this weekend. They had to jump in to rescue more than 100 people but one man didnt make it. Cbs 2s Valerie Castro reports from nassau county. First he was saying help, but once we got close to him he said my brother is underwater. Reporter andre, a body border, was on the water in long beach when two swimmers were saturday. This video shows rescue efforts of lifeguards the u. S. Coast guard had a boat searching the waters. Lifeguards linked hands to form a human chain and 45 minutes later carlos from brooklyn was found. He did not survive but his friend who was treated on the beach by emergency crews did. He said that survivor was very upset. It was pretty intense. I are feel bad for the guy. Reporter the long beach patrol chief says the water conditions were dangerous all weekend. The rip currents are very bad. We must have pulled over 100 people out of the water today. Reporter he says if you do get caught in a rip current, first, dont panic. Let the tread water till the current subsides. Then swim parallel to the shore before heading in to the beach. There was a second drowning death reported yesterday on long island in west hampton. Police there confirm another 23yearold from brooklyn died at rodgers beach. Police say its unclear if he was also caught in a rip current. Valerie castro, cbs 2 news. Police in new jersey are looking for a woman who stole a small dog right from the owners driveway. Video from a surveillance camera clearly shows her walking up the driveway in hackensack on saturday. Owner Andrea Whitelock says she was heart broken when she realized her pomeranian named diamond was missing and then shocked. I just want her to bring diamondback. Just bring her back. Be love her. Hackensack police have looked at that Surveillance Video to get a look at the suspect and the car she left in. People in Westchester County are trying to bring back the craze that swept social media last summer.
