Our top story this morning, state Health Inspectors will be back in the bronx looking for legionella bacteria in cooling towers. Mayor de blasio said the monthlong outbreak has been contained but yesterday five more buildings tested positive bringing the total to 10. The number of cases stands at 108. There hasnt been a new case in five days but the risk does linger in the bronx. Ilana gold has more on that story from the melrose section. The bronx county hall of justice is one of the buildings that just tested positive for the bacteria. But more could be affected. Teams from the Health Department will be back in the area testing dozens of buildings. Reporter state Health Inspectors have another tough job ahead of them today. They plan to take water samples from 42 cooling towers across the south bronx that supply air conditioning and send them to a lab for legionella testing. This is uncharted territory. It is important we acknowledge that. Weve never seen an outbreak of legionnaires like this in the history of new york city. Theyre focussed on 100 cooling towers in five sections of the bronx, fordham, mt. Eden, hunts point, mott haven and high bridge. They tested 57 after the Bronx Borough president asked the governor to get involved to help control the outbreak. Were here to help manage this process. Were in constant communication with all levels of government including the city. Reporter the city revealed five new sites where the Health Department found traces of legionella bacteria, all in populated area. They include a verizon building, housing court, hall of justice and samuel gumpers high school. It can cause deadly pneumonia. They told my parents a few times that i was on the verge of not making it. Daniel tejada, more than 100 people recently infected with legionnaires disease. They took my temperature and it was 105 or 106. Reporter Health Officials say you cant get it from person to person contact. In the latest cases victims breathe in mist from the aaffected cooling towers. People dont maintain their property. That is what it comes down to. That is what i think. Reporter they need assurance they wont get sick. The city should take care of it. And theyre not. The cooling towers at the five buildings that just tested positive have been treated and disinfected. Now to a developing story out of afghanistan. A u. S. Soldier has been killed and several others injured in a series of attacks in kabul yesterday. The wave of attacks left at least 40 people dead and more than 300 injured. The taliban claimed responsibility for at least two bombings. Crews are expected to resume their search for a kayaker. The Sheriffs Office said a kayak carrying a man and woman cab sized in the hudson river near Historic Hills mansion in staatsburg. 23yearold tali fruchtmann was picked up but ian jones disappeared. The two were not wearing life jackets. Police are looking for a man who groped a woman on a subway this past friday. This is the man they want to talk to. A woman was on the platform at the atlantic subway station in park slope, brooklyn, when she saw this man touching himself in front of her. He then boarded the train with her and proceeded to grab her from behind. The woman took this picture of him and gave it to the police. In brooklyn, Surveillance Video captured these images of a man who attempted to rape a woman on her way home. Investigators say he approached the woman on 16th street in sunset park and asked him to let her into a building. When she refused he exposed himself and pushed her to the ground. The suspect ran away when the woman screamed. A queens mom is facing Second Degree further charges in the death of her baby. According to sources, 21yearold Rashida Choudhury confessed to throwing her 19dayold son out of a fourth story window saying she believed he was possessed. A neighbor found his body and called 911. A brooklyn couple is facing charges after they locked their two daughters in a car while they gambled in queens. Dave carlin has more from kew gardens. Facing a judge here at queens criminal court, these parents put their desire to gamble ahead of their childrens welfare. Reporter these sisters spent much of the day at the 106th precinct station house. In handcuffs were 33yearold maria loha and 34yearold segndo japa. Investigators say late friday night the couple gambled at the resorts world casino in the queens and put their daughters at risk. Witnesses say it was close to midnight and the girls were left in the back seat of the familys suv in the parking lot. Police estimate for about an hour. It is unbelievable that a parent could be so irresponsible to put their pleasures before the welfare of the kid. How do you do Something Like that . Your child, youre supposed to be with them 24 7 to make sure theyre safe. Reporter a Security Guard spotted the girls in the suv and called the cops. The familys neighbors in bushwick, brooklyn, say theyre surprised. Theyre usually with their kids, and her husband. I didnt think she would leave them to gamble. Emotions running high as residents mark the oneyear anniversary of the death of michael brown. The shooting by a Police Officer sparked weeks of unrest.
