As we look at the vortex satellite and radar we had a few showers making their way to the north of the city early this morning. They are starting to dissipate. The sprinkles, you may see a few more fall before all is said and done. By this afternoon, skies will be mostly sunny under an air quality alert. We have high levels of o shown in the atmosphere. 9 00 a. M. 79. Feeling like 82. By noon 86, mostly sunny. Feels like 88. At 3 00 this afternoon, we peak at 92 degrees. It will feel like 94. Skies will be mostly sunny. In the first forecast, the full heat wave of 2013. I will have details shortly. We begin with breaking news out of east harlem. Police are on the hunt for a man who escaped custody while still in handcuffs. Ilana gold joins us from east harlem. This morning. We want to show you video of police scouring the area by 102nd and park. They have been going to a number of buildings trying to find the suspect but he is on the run. Here is what we know the the escape happened at 3 00 outside the 23rd precinct. Officers say they had taken him out of the patrol car, he was in handcuffs and as they walked him up to the building, he broke loose and ran off. Its unclear why he was arrested but police say it was a low level offense. On july 25, Arthur Collins escaped from the 25th precinct in east harlem. He got out of the holding cell when i was booked on a charge. Then another problem june 23rd when tarek arnold escaped from the 32nd precinct in harlem. Video shows him running down the street and officers chasing after him. He was captured after a month on the run. Back out live at the 23rd precinct where police are looking for an escaped prisoner, we are looking for more details on who this man is. We will keep you updated. Ilana gold, cbs 2 news. Thank you. New this morning, julian bond, an activist at the forefront of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement died. He died in Fort Walton Beach after battling an unspecified illness. He served as founding president in the 70s and chairman of the board for the naacp for more than a decade. In the 80s he fought against apartheid in south africa. He was 75. Three people died after a multivehicle crash on the taconic state parkway in yorktown. Before 3 00 a bmw s. U. V. Slammed into an embankment north of bald win and went airborne. The vehicle then struck eight other cars. One person was rushed to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition. No word on what caused the crash. A brooklyn family is in mourning after a 5yearold boy drown swimming in the rockaways. Ezekial was unresponsive and unconscious when a life guard pulled him from the waters. Lifeguards say there were strong rip currents yesterday but its unclear if that was factor in the boys death. Police are searching for four people after a stabbing at the Union Square Subway station. Investigators say the attack happened around 6 30 last night on a southbound platform. Witnesses say the attack appears to have involved a group of young people. The victim was taken to bellevue and is expected to be okay. Crews from the National Transportation safety board are trying to determine what caused a deadly plane crash in new jersey. The single engine cessna was flying to teterboro when it just fell out of the sky, burst into flames in west caldwell. Cbs 2s matt kozar has more. Ntsb investigators say initial reports suggest the pilot experienced some type of mechanical failure. He was trying to make it back to the runway when he nose dived into the woods about 300 feet behind this day care center. Thick black smoke billowed high into the blue sky from the site of the plane crash. Witnesses who heard the explosions ran toward the flames to help but there was nothing they could do. The second you saw the explosion you knew what happened. No way anyone walks way from that. Reporter shortly after taking off from the Essex County Airport at 10 00 a. M. The pilot of a six seater 2009 cessna like this road the control tower that he was unable to maintain power. He sadie Christina Aguilera an emergency, returning to the field immediately. The tower responded. 3 tango victor, anything you need, runway. According to initial statements the aircraft may have lost engine power. Reporter the pilot crashed a half mile from the airport. It looked like it was making a turn then it kind of nose dived into the ground. As soon as it hit the ground it exploded then two more explosions after that. Reporter police say the 50 yearold pilot, a new jersey man, was the only one on board. He was a Flight Instructor on his way to pick up a student. Five investigators with the National Transportation safety board are working to determine the cause of the crash. We have all four corners of the airplane on scene. It didnt lose parts in flight and we have evidence of a post next three days. They are flying in specialists from kansas and pennsylvania to help in the investigation. Reporting from west caldwell, new jersey, matt kozar, cbs 2 news. An update in the legionnaires outbreak in the bronx. The City Health Department added several more confirmed cases with people with the disease bringing the total to 124. 94 have been treated and released from the hospital. 12 have died from the disease. There have been no new confirmed cases since august 3rd. The Health Department says all the people who died were adults with preexisting medical conditions. Police are desperately trying to identify this woman. Ems found her lying on the ground on 11th avenue near 43rd street in Hells Kitchen wednesday night. She was taken to roosevelt hospital. Hospital workers told police she does not speak or respond to verbal prompts. She is believed to be in her 70s. A firefighter shot twice during a violent stand off on Staten Island is back home this morning. Dozens of firefighters cheered as lieutenant james hayes left Richmond University Medical Center yesterday afternoon. The 31 year veteran of the fdny is expected to make a full recovery. He was shot twice responding to reports of smoke coming from a home where u. S. Marshals were trying to serve a warrant. The man who shot hayes died in a shoot out with police. Air travel is back to normal this morning after a major computer glitch. Frustrated fliers packed airports from washington to detroit for hours yesterday. More than 3400 flights were delayed. More than 600 completely canceled. Chris van chief tells us what went wrong. Reporter there were no smiles at Reagan National airport outside of washington, d. C. Every flight on this departure board showed up red, delayed due to a crippling computer failure at a facility in virginia that stretched on for hours. This map shows a multistate hole in the nations air traffic leading to delayed and canceled flights nationwide. This was the scene at laguardia airport. Long lines, delays and plenty of frustration. A homeowner snapped photos of this black bear sticking its head through the cat door. The homeowner said while he was on vacation he made the might stake of leaving the glass door slightly cracked. When he got home he discovered a bear had entered, ate, went to the bathroom on the carpet. This is not the first run in with a bear. In may a bear and two decks climbed on the condo to eat bird feed. That would freak me out. Easy to say awe when that is a photo. They believe the con artist in this case got the teens phone number from the internet or called it randomly.
