The City Health Department says the legionnaires outbreak in the south bronx is over. It also identified the cooling tower at the Opera House Hotel as the source of the outbreak. 12 people died after getting infected with the legionella bacteria. 127 people in all were sickened. Last week the city passed new regulations for the inspection of cooling towers to prevent future outbreaks. Former president jimmy carter is sharing his struggle with cancer. But then doctors told him the momentum had spread to four spots on his brain. Hope for the best and accept what comes. Weve i think i have been as blessed as any human being in the world. Reporter the former president started radiation thursday and says he is going to have to cut back on International Humanitarian work. Carter was notably upbeat as he talked about his cancer here at the carter center. He even drew laughs when asked about the one thing in his life he wished he would have done differently. I wish i had sent one more helicopter to get the hostages. We would have rescued them, i would have been reelected. Starting today he is scheduled to have four radiation treatments three weeks apart. Dr. Max gomez joins us to explain this process and also the prognosis. Clearly, he is in great spirits. Yes. And im sure that that doesnt hurt the whole process. It can only help. Exactly. But given his age, dr. Max, can we talk a little bit about his prognosis and also the side effects of the treatment . Its not quite as bad as it would have been even just a few years ago. Its impossible to predict, of course, no one is suggesting aggressive chemo or surgery which probably wouldnt be indicated even in someone who is not 90 like the former president. But the four brain radiation treatments he started today, they will likely make him very tired but otherwise not too bad. That said, prognosis for metastatic momentum has been revolutionized in the past few years ago thanks to immune stimulating drugs one of which mr. Carter said he is going to be taking. Those drugs have extended quality life from 6 to 12 months in cases like mr. Carters, to years and in some cases even curing it. Its been a complete game changer for metastatic melanoma. One more thing. He said it didnt start in his skin. It happens in about 4 or 5 of melanomas. They dont start in the skin. They are not related to sun exposure. They tend to be more aggressive and they are found at a more advanced stage because they occur in areas that are hidden compared to skin. Sometimes skin melanomas also actually disappear but not before they metastasize so the original cancer is never found only the ones that spread to other organs such as liver and brain which is the case in mr. Carter. All right. He has a great attitude and in good health for his age. He really is. So he has a decent shot at a number of years probably of still good health here. So well see. Most of the losses came after a report from the central bank global economy. We have an update about a baby found inside a locked safe in a hotel. It all happened with a game of hide n seek. Niagra falls police say the family contacted them last night. On tuesday, the panicked parents called the hotel staff saying the child was trapped in the safe. After the child was freed the family left. Police officers wanted to talk to them to determine whether the child was in danger. It appears though to be an accident. One of the siblings and the child decided that it was a good spot to hide in the safe. And older sibling helped her get into the safe and pressed buttons and didnt know how to open it. The child did not lose consciousness while inside the safe. A brooklyn man convicted of murder is hoping a new hearing will lead to his freedom. A judge ordered a hearing to review the case. John guica was convicted in his role in throughout three murder of mark fisher who was shot to death following a party in brooklyn. Antonio reso was the convicted triggerman. Guicas Attorney Says the prosecutor manufactured trial. I believe the conclusion is the conviction will be overturned. Reporter one of the holdups in this stop shop parking lot one of the suspects flashing a gun according to police then stealing a 57yearold womans purse as she put her groceries in her car. Theres no morality anymore. Theres no law and order anymore. Scary right here, you know i thought it was of a safe area. Reporter investigators say it happened around 9 30 the night of july 12th at the Shopping Plaza on highland boulevard. They say a Good Samaritan who saw the confrontation chased the suspect for two blocks on foot only to be confronted by the suspects alleged accomplice. Police say the accomplice pulled up in a white chevy seen in this Surveillance Video with a walkietalkie pretending to be an officer telling the Good Samaritan he had the situation under control. And then the duo sped off. Got to rob people i like to . They got to pose as a Police Officer . Thats pretty stupid. Reporter investigators say the pair had been busy earlier in the day, as well. Around 2 00 that morning they say the suspects followed two men in their 20s in the same white chevy on midland avenue telling them, quote, police, get against the wall robbing them of 300 cash. And then just after midnight on august 7, investigators say they teamed up again. Police say that the suspects followed an 18yearold who was walking outside of this bank on new dorp lane asked him for his identification so when the teen went to pull his wallet, they swiped a 50 cash inside handed him back the wallet and then took off. The cops do a very good job on staten island. Theres no question about that. But you cant be everywhere all the time. This is the only school the pope will visit during his whirlwind new york city tour and the kids say, they cant wait. I feel really excited butterflies in my stomach flying around. Reporter Allison Reyes may only be 8 years old, but she is about to do something many catholics could only dream of doing in their entire lifetime. She is going to meet pope francis. I pray to god and said thank you, god, for giving me this kind of opportunity. Reporter the bright eyed thirdgrader at our lady queen of Angels School in east harlem is among 24 third and fourth graders from her and three other schools who will speak with his holiness when he visits this school on east 112th street at the end of september. I feel very excited because he is the head of all catholics. Its incredible. Its a onceinalifetime opportunity. Its the pope. He is like he is very high. What did i get myself into . The first hurricane of the season is churning in the atlantic. Hurricane danny is packing winds up to 75 miles per hour. And it could get stronger in the next two days. Right now, the storm does not pose a threat to land. Vanessa murdoch though is tracking the progress of that hurricane. She is in the Weather Center with that and our local forecast. Right now, danny is about 2500 miles away from new york city. It is a long ways away and it is a very compact hurricane but it is still the first hurricane of the 2015 season. Right now winds are at 80 miles per hour. The storm moving west northwest at about 10 miles per hour. So lets take a look at the track now so you know exactly what to expect with this storm over the next couple of days. It will be making its way in the westnorthwest direction heading towards the leeward islands. It will be arriving there late on sunday. Likely as a weakened storm. Here you see those winds of 70 miles per hour. We put it back at Tropical Storm status. As it makes its way into tuesday it continues that progress in the westnorthwest direction making its way over puerto rico. Winds now at 60 miles per hour. So the storm anticipated to weaken as it comes close us to us and continue on the general direction. That was in the tropics. It is feeling like the tropics here. The west. Afternoon. The trend continuing for county. As we go into the evening hours, more rain to come, mainly west of the city. And then this, the back end of the system, the cold front that will slowly make its way across the region, likely making for a messy commute for some. So we have a Flash Flood Watch in effect until 9 a. M. Tomorrow morning. Mainly west of the city. This is where we expect to have some of the biggest problems. But not everybody is going to be dealing with flooding. Heres what we think is going to happen. The heaviest rain overnight until tomorrow morning, say around 9 00, 10 00. Flooding most likely west and north of the city. It will be a slow go for some in the morning so best to plan a little bit of extra time now. And make sure you have that umbrella handy.
