Can you imagine walking every single block in the big apple . Professor of sociology william helrisch has. Thank you for being here. You are an author. First tell me where did you come up with the idea of walking pretty much every block in the five burroughs . In the back of my mind somewhere it probably started with my father who on weekends, when i was a kid growing up in manhattan on the upper west side, took me on trips every weekend or almost every weekend. We would take the subway. The name of the game was last stop. Thats what we did. We went to the last stop, walked around the neighborhood. We did this for four or five years off and on. And when we ran out of last stops, we went to the second to the last stop and third to last stop. I think in that way my interest in new york city was kindled at an early age. Then i had been teaching a course in sociology and sociology of new york city for 40 years until one day somebody said why dont you write a book about it . It was my chairman. I got in contact with Princeton University press and the rest was history, so to speak, and i started walking. Tell me about the process. How long did it take you and did you map it out and how long did you walk every day . It took me four years. Four years . 30 miles a week. 120 a month. 1,500 a year. Four times fir teen hundred and you are at 6,000. I walked 6048 miles. And the city is really 6163. Thats 121,000 blocks. I mapped it out by taking each neighborhood, block by block, step by step. When you walk it in a focused way, you know, you have to really concentrate. And did it step by step. I used my rock ports and i used my pedometer. And you got it done. What surprised you youre a lifelong new yorker. What surprised you the most about what you found when you walked around . The friendliness of the people. The way in which, on a serious note, 9 11 is seared in the consciousness of every new yorker. No matter what neighborhood . It doesnt matter. When you take a look, you see so many streets named after firemen, policemen. I remember walking on a street in brooklyn and seeing henry miller. I thought it was the playwright. It wasnt. It was the fireman henry miller. Thats what matters there. And because new york city has 771 miles of coastline, it this meant that so many people who saw that happen on that day were looking out there like a giant hole in their landscape. I found that immigrants are really very, very much contributing to the city. Right. Of course, as they are the country. People ask me why dont you just walk one hour and say you walked four hours . Well, beside the fact that its not the case, i would have missed so many things like the immigrant in queens when i saw the beautiful flowers outside his house and i said what they are, he said they grow in my homeland of guy and a. When i get i see the flowers. Your book came out in paperback. Tell us about that and the next few books you are writing as well. Well, this book came out in paperback now. It did well in hard cover. We went through a number of printings. Now its out in paperback, guess. And i am now working on five more books, one on each borough. I finished the first one. The brooklyn nobody knows. Year. And then i am doing manhattan and city . Yes. We look forward to that. Thank you for sharing some of your experiences. We appreciate it. My pleasure.
