They say the first yard is in your head. For footballers that is. It means knowing what you are going to do with the ball before you receive it. That’s why great players often look like they have all the time in the world. Because they have it all worked out. No sense of hurry or rush, just unshakeable self-belief. I was like that. Really. For me, the first yard was always upstairs. I could visualise the space and pick the pass. Flawless. Unfortunately, the second yard – the one where I made actual contact with the ball in real time – was generally a disaster. I was a waste of valuable space on a pitch, not to mention a slice of orange at half-time.
