Drop off live Christmas trees through Jan. 26 throughout Pittsburgh. December 30, 2020 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK With the holiday season coming to a close, we are left with live Christmas trees that need to be thrown away. This year, instead of placing the tree on the curb to be sent to a landfill, you can recycle it at five drop-off locations throughout the city until Jan. 26. After collection, the trees will be chipped into pine mulch and made available to the public for free next spring. Before dropping off trees, please remove all decorations and tree stands. Last year, Pittsburgh collected more than 109 tons of trees. This year, the Department of Public Works’ Forestry Division and Bureau of Environmental Services will offer the service again as part of the city’s Climate Action Plan 3.0, which defines milestones for keeping materials out of landfills.
