With mandatory masks, an obligatory Covid-19 test on arrival and handspritt bottles everywhere, Iceland’s Keflavik Airport felt like any other during last summer’s brief lockdown hiatus. But away from the airport, the country couldn’t have been more different, with its naturally socially distanced open spaces and, rather unusually, empty car parks at its ‘golden circle’ tourist honeypot sites – Gullfoss waterfall, Strokkur geyser and Thingvellir National Park. Will that remain the case this summer? High on our ‘green watchlist’, we’re confident that during 2021 Iceland will allow third-country nationals with an international vaccination certificate to enter quarantine-free. That could bring an influx of tourists, which means that if you do venture to the ‘land of ice and fire’ you should plan to explore away from that ‘golden circle’.
