WHILE the recent ban imposed by the government on a right-wing entity is laudable, one wonders if a simple notification will be good enough to actually ban the organisation. In the past, extremist, sectarian and ethnic organisations got banned only to re-emerge under some other identity. Even after the ban, sensitive matters like foreign policy, involving relations with major European countries, were ‘negotiated’ with members of the banned entity. Foreign policy and state sovereignty are matters that require collective brainstorming by men of intellect. Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had given his vision to build a modern democratic welfare state where the Muslim majority could live in peace with members of other faiths with basic fundamental rights clearly guaranteed to one and all under the constitution. Instead of adopting his vision, the nation unfortunately embarked on a course of self-destruction.
