Will Kerala's gold smuggling case be Pinarayi Vijayan's undoing?

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan could be close to a historic achievement in the southern state—a second consecutive term. No government which has completed a full term has ever returned to power in the 64-year history of the state. In the past few decades, it has been a revolving door between the CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-led UDF. The LDF believed it was close to getting a second term in 1991, but the Congress-led UDF swept into power in the elections. The UDF benefited in some measure by a sympathy wave that followed Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in May that year and also a fatal miscalculation by the sitting LDF chief minister E.K. Nayanar. Enthused by the Left's strong showing in the local body polls, Nayanar dissolved the assembly a year before its term expired. Vijayan, a cautious party apparatchik, would not fall for such hubris. He has, in fact, planned for a second term ever since he took office in 2016. But now, a scandal of gold smuggling via diplomatic channels and the smuggling of $190,000 to the UAE have cast an ominous shadow over his government. Central investigative agencies are tightening the rope around him and his cabinet colleagues.
